Book excerpt: "Friedin writes just the kind of criticism Mandelstam wrote and which he would have loved: grounded in careful reading but never timid, quirky but never merely eccentric, the product of a mind and sensibility keenly alive to the times, both historical and critical. . . . Nothing I have read on Mandelstam has so provoked my own thinking as has Freidin's work. . . . It is stimulating in every sense of the word and will move the study of Mandelstam off the point at which it has been stuck for far too long." - John E. Malmstad, Harvard University "Combining as it does sensitive close readings of the Mandelstam texts with an uncommonly wide range of literary and sociocultural reference, A Coat of Many Colors is a welcome and significant addition to the body of scholarship bearing on one of our century's finest poets." -Victor Erlich, Yale University

The popularity of the discourse on the shift in the centre of gravity of Christianity from the North to the South sometimes obscures the ongoing revitalization of Christianity in the Northern hemisphere. This book provides the needed caution in understanding how and to what extent immigrant religious communities, such as African and Caribbean Christianities in Britain, are contributing to the reenergizing and re-empowering of Christianity in Britain but also repositioning World Christianities. It is a must-read for all interested in the reconfiguration of Christianity in our modern cosmos. Dr. Afe Adogame Centre for the Study of World Christianity, The University of Edinburgh New College, Mound Place, Edinburgh, UK Coat of Many Colours uniqueness is profound as Babatunde Adedibu has not only documented the historical antecedents dating from the origin of modern black churches in Britain to 1907 and the relevance of these churches. Instead, he finds that he has joined a new world where race is front and center. The recipient of a scholarship designed to increase black student enrollment, Tweedy soon meets a professor who bluntly questions whether he belongs in medical school, a moment that crystallizes the challenges he will face throughout his career. Making matters worse, in lecture after lecture the common refrain for numerous diseases resounds, "More common in blacks than in whites." Black Man in a White Coat examines the complex ways in which both black doctors and patients must navigate the difficult and often contradictory terrain of race and medicine. As Tweedy transforms from student to practicing physician, he discovers how often race influences his encounters with patients. Through their stories, he illustrates the complex social, cultural, and economic factors at the root of many health problems in the black community. These issues take on greater meaning when Tweedy is himself diagnosed with a chronic disease far more common among black people. In this powerful, moving, and deeply empathic book, Tweedy explores the challenges confronting black doctors, and the disproportionate health burdens faced by black patients, ultimately seeking a way forward to better treatment and more compassionate care.
Book Synopsis Blue Coat or Powdered Wig by : Stewart R. King
Download or read book Blue Coat or Powdered Wig written by Stewart R. King and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the late 1700s, half the free population of Saint Domingue was black. The French Caribbean colony offered a high degree of social, economic, and physical mobility to free people of color. Covering the period 1776-1791, this study offers the most comprehensive portrait to date of Saint Domingue’s free black elites on the eve of the colony's transformation into the republic of Haiti. Stewart R. King identifies two distinctive groups that shared Saint Domingue’s free black upper stratum, one consisting of planters and merchants and the other of members of the army and police forces. With the aid of individual and family case studies, King documents how the two groups used different strategies to pursue the common goal of economic and social advancement. Among other aspects, King looks at the rural or urban bases of these groups’ networks, their relationships with whites and free blacks of lesser means, and their attitudes toward the acquisition, use, and sale of land, slaves, and other property. King’s main source is the notarial archives of Saint Domingue, whose holdings offer an especially rich glimpse of free black elite life. Because elites were keenly aware of how a bureaucratic paper trail could help cement their status, the archives divulge a wealth of details on personal and public matters. Blue Coat or Powdered Wig is a vivid portrayal of race relations far from the European centers of colonial power, where the interactions of free blacks and whites were governed as much by practicalities and shared concerns as by the law.
