Book Synopsis Mitigating Shore Erosion Along Sheltered Coasts by : National Research Council
Download or read book Mitigating Shore Erosion Along Sheltered Coasts written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-05-04 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like ocean beaches, sheltered coastal areas experience land loss from erosion and sea level rise. In response, property owners often install hard structures such as bulkheads as a way to prevent further erosion, but these structures cause changes in the coastal environment that alter landscapes, reduce public access and recreational opportunities, diminish natural habitats, and harm species that depend on these habitats for shelter and food. Mitigating Shore Erosion Along Sheltered Coasts recommends coastal planning efforts and permitting policies to encourage landowners to use erosion control alternatives that help retain the natural features of coastal shorelines.

Book Synopsis Soft Shore Protection by : Constantine Goudas
Download or read book Soft Shore Protection written by Constantine Goudas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming, melting polar caps, rising sea levels and intensifying wave-current action, factors responsible for the alarming phenomena of coastal erosion on the one hand and adverse environmental impacts and the high cost of 'hard' protection schemes, on the other, have created interest in the detailed examination of the potential and range of applicability of the emerging and promising category of 'soft' shore protection methods. 'Soft' methods such as beach nourishment, submerged breakwaters, artificial reefs, gravity drain systems, floating breakwaters, plantations of hydrophylous shrubs or even dry branches, applied mostly during the past 20 years, are recognised as possessing technical, environmental and financial advantageous properties deserving more attention and further developmental experimentation than has occured hitherto. On the other hand, 'hard' shore protection methods such as seawalls, groins and detached breakwaters, artefacts borrowed from port design and construction technology, no matter how well designed and well implemented they may be, can hardly avoid intensification of the consequential erosive, often devastating, effects on the down-drift shores. Moreover, they often do not constitute environmentally and financially attractive solutions for long stretches of eroding shoreline. Engineers and scientists practising design and implementation of shore defence schemes have been aware for many years of the public demand for improved shore protection technologies. They are encouraging efforts that promise enrichment of those environmentally sound and financially attractive methods that can be safely applied.
Book Synopsis Coastal Erosion by : Roger H. Charlier
Download or read book Coastal Erosion written by Roger H. Charlier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-10 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coastal zone is subject to strong pressures from a large number of users. Populations are migrating to it in large numbers. Industry wants to exploit it for its space, water and manpower. Aggregate miners want to exploit mineral resources and health centers are multiplying. It is a favorite area for tourism and recreation worldwide. The zone can boom economically. However, coastlines are progressively receding worldwide, making the zone fragile, vulnerable, and unstable. The book presents methods of coastal protection and beach restoration and offers solutions to the various problems.
Book Synopsis Detached Breakwaters for Shore Protection by : William R. Dally
Download or read book Detached Breakwaters for Shore Protection written by William R. Dally and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses the application of detached single and segmented breakwaters for shore protection and beach stabilization. Four single detached breakwaters and six segmented breakwater systems in the United States are reviewed. Based on this review, the performance of breakwaters in other countries, and general knowledge of coastal processes, the implementation and design of breakwaters are discussed. General guidance is presented for the design of detached breakwaters and several design examples are presented. (Author).
