Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The coastal dune lakes of northwest Florida are globally rare ecosystems with intermittent connections to the Gulf of Mexico that result in mix of freshwater and estuarine characteristics. They are managed as freshwater lakes, but most lakes are not protected by numeric nutrient criteria. This study examined 13 coastal dune lakes in Walton County, Florida, through multivariate analyses of water quality data using principal component analysis, cluster analysis, and hypothesis testing with a similarity profile. A classification analysis revealed three lake classes: fresh, mixed, and estuarine. A temporal analysis revealed that the lakes did not change class over ten years, with the two exceptions likely the result of physical changes to the Gulf outlets of those lakes. Climatic variation was evident in all lakes, which affected outlet connection type and frequency, and suggested that phytoplankton biomass accumulation was limited by water residence time. Lake morphology, geographic orientation, and density stratification appeared to cause frequent bottom hypoxia in two of the lakes. A comparative analysis showed that the coastal dune lakes are more similar to the regional estuary, Choctawhatchee Bay, than to a regional freshwater lake. Existing water quality data were used to develop proposed numeric nutrient criteria.

Book excerpt: Northwest Florida is home to fifteen rare coastal dune lakes that share an intermittent connection with the Gulf of Mexico. This full-color, 112-page photo book reveals the beauty and rarity of the lakes and the surrounding emerald coast communities along the Scenic Highway 30A area. The dune lakes are mostly freshwater lakes with occasional saltwater exchange from the gulf, creating biologically diverse ecosystems. Natural habitats for a huge variety of flora and fauna, coastal dune lakes are brackish, dynamic, geological treasures in South Walton County, Florida. Author/photographer Ginger Jackson Sinton explores the beauty of the lakes and the diversity of the ecosystems surrounding them. With an eye for nature and the environment, she weaves personal anecdotes through the photo guidebook. The ?Sense of Home? in the subtitle is twofold: the dune lakes habitats of native plants and animals and her own fondness for the colorful locale along the gulf coast.

Northwest Florida Coastal Dune Lakes (NWFLCDL) are even more rare and unique habitats due to their characteristic intermittent connection to the Gulf of Mexico. These intermittent connections can cause temporary estuarine environments. While there are policies in place to help protect and preserve the lakes and their surrounding area, little is known about the fish communities of NWFCDL. As traditional sampling to monitor fish communities can be costly and timeintensive, this project aimed to characterize and monitor the fish communities of the NWFLCDL using environmental DNA from water samples and metabarcoding. Metabarcoding involves using generalist molecular markers to describe diversity within a specific taxonomic group. Seventy-two samples across 19 lakes were sequenced using Illumina HiSeq. Bar charts were used to display composition of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) spatially and temporally. Nutrient (phosphorus, nitrogen, chlorophyll concentration) and water quality data (specific conductance, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, salinity) from previous studies and measurements taken in the field were used to describe how abiotic factors relate to the fish communities in the NWFLCDL. This project provides a baseline of information necessary to stress the importance of preserving unique habitats.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal zones are becoming increasingly topical (and politically sensitive) as they face relentless pressures from urban expansion, recreational development, and sea level rise due to climate change. This timely book provides a comprehensive introduction to the formation, dynamics, maintenance, and perpetuation of coastal sand dune systems. It describes the interactions between living organisms and the physical processes of geomorphology. A global range of examples enhance the book's international appeal. Based on the research presented in this book, simple to complex field studies and experiments could be designed at undergraduate and graduate levels to illustrate various biological principles. This accessible book is intended for a diverse audience; as an invaluable reference for researchers who study coastal dune systems and for novice researchers requiring a sound introduction to the subject. This book is suitable for both senior undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in coastal zone management, plant ecology, restoration ecology, and conservation biology, as well as the many professional ecologists and conservation biologists requiring a concise but authoritative overview of the topic. The book also will be of relevance and use to coastal managers, planners, naturalists, and anyone pursuing a greater understanding of coastal sand dunes.
