Book excerpt: Often overlooked by most tourists and locals alike, the Bronx—one of five boroughs that comprise the city of New York—is rich in cultural and historical attractions. From the Bronx Zoo (the largest urban zoo in the United States) to the New York Botanical Garden (one of the most visited botanical gardens in the world), this borough has something for everyone. Visitors can explore historical locations (including where George Washington slept and where Edgar Allan Poe lived and worked), watch a game in one of the most famous baseball stadiums in the United States—Yankee Stadium—and sample delicious Italian food in New York’s real “Little Italy” on Arthur Avenue and New England style seafood at City Island along the edge of Long Island Sound. The Bronx—which includes thirty-six color photographs—provides visitors with informative chapters on more than twelve of the borough’s extraordinary destinations as well as self-guided walking tours of some of the most ethnically, architecturally, and historically diverse neighborhoods. History buffs will find beautifully preserved eighteenth- and nineteenth-century homes, the Hall of Fame for Great Americans (which pays homage to many familiar faces in American history), and Woodlawn Cemetery (the final resting place for prominent Americans including Duke Ellington, Joseph Pulitzer, Gloria Vanderbilt Whitney, and Thomas Nast). In addition to the botanical garden, nature lovers can enjoy the beautiful Pelham Bay Park and Van Cortlandt Park. The Bronx also highlights the surprising number of art galleries, museums, and performance venues that visitors are sure to enjoy, further demonstrating the borough’s cultural prominence. .

Book Synopsis Windship Technology by : C Satchwell
Download or read book Windship Technology written by C Satchwell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Windship Technology, Part A contains the proceedings of the International Symposium on Windship Technology (WINDTECH '85), held at the University of Southampton, England, on April 24-25, 1985. The symposium provided a forum for discussing developments in windship technology, including the use of calculation methods to analyze wind propulsion on cargo ships and weather routing for wind-assisted ships. Measurements of the comparative performance of sailing rigs are also presented. Comprised of 17 chapters, this volume begins by tracing the revival of serious interest in the possible use of the wind in ship propulsion over the past decade, and giving examples of the wide range of rigs that have been developed and are now installed on ships. The reader is then introduced to Project INDOSAIL intended to develop cargo sailing vessels for the Indonesian inter-island trade. Subsequent chapters focus on sail-assist developments from 1979 to 1984; economic aspects of the application of additional sail power on small German fishing vessels; sail retrofit on inter-island vessels in Fiji; and the aerodynamics of a triangular jib-and-boom combination. The book concludes with an evaluation of two-dimensional sail shape determined by pressure and its tension. This book will appeal to government officials, academics, ship owners, and other parties with an interest in windship technology.

Book Synopsis THE STORIES AND STUDIES OF AFRICAN VALUES by : Dipo Toby Alakija
Download or read book THE STORIES AND STUDIES OF AFRICAN VALUES written by Dipo Toby Alakija and published by Calvary Rock Resource. This book was released on 2019-02-20 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most African and other nations often build and develop economic, political and other structures at the expense of the Value Systems which are sometimes constructed by their National Anthems and The Pledge To The Nations. The neglect or shutting down of National Value Systems in these nations which arguably are the live wires that power other sectors within the societies give room for vices and crimes to be on the increase. This book is designed to be studied by parents, teachers and students in primary or junior and high schools in Africa with the objectives of imbibing African traditional and moral values into them. With particular focus on children and youths, through the use of stories; poems; proverbs; quotes and class activities, the author attempts to give vivid pictures of African Values as opposed to westernization which is clearly wiping out what the founding fathers of the nations on the continent stand for.
