Book Synopsis Guidelines for the Promotion of Environmental Management of Coastal Aquaculture Development by : Uwe C. Barg
Download or read book Guidelines for the Promotion of Environmental Management of Coastal Aquaculture Development written by Uwe C. Barg and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1992 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is directed to aquaculture development specialists, coastal resource use planners and government officials involved and interested in the planning and management of coastal aquaculture development within the wider context of resource use in coastal areas. It is intended to serve in the promotion of environmental management of coastal aquaculture. Guidelines are given for improved environmental management of coastal aquaculture based on an overview of selected published experiences and concepts. Potential adverse environmental effects of and on coastal aquaculture practices are addressed with consideration of main socio-economic and bio-physical factors. Methodologies are presented for the assessment and monitoring of environmental hazards and impacts of coastal aquaculture. Selected environmental management options are described for application both at policy-level and farm-level.
Book Synopsis Marine Aquaculture by : National Research Council
Download or read book Marine Aquaculture written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-02-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal farming and ocean ranching of marine fish, shellfish, crustaceans, and seaweed are a major and growing industry worldwide. In the United States, freshwater aquaculture is rapidly becoming a significant commercial activity; however, marine aquaculture has lagged behind. This book examines the obstacles to developing marine aquaculture in the United States and offers specific recommendations for technology and policy strategies to encourage this industry. The volume provides a wealth of information on the status of marine aquacultureâ€"including comparisons between U.S. and foreign approaches to policy and technology and of the diverse species under culture. Marine Aquaculture also describes problems of coordination of regulatory policy among various federal, state, and local government agencies and escalating competition for the use of coastal waters. It addresses environmental concerns and suggests engineering and research strategies for alleviating negative impacts from marine aquaculture operations.
Book Synopsis Assessment and Communication of Environmental Risks in Coastal Aquaculture by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Assessment and Communication of Environmental Risks in Coastal Aquaculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Fao. This book was released on 2008 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This GESAMP study presents a set of objectives, goals, methodologies and a checklist for assessment and communication of environmental risks which may be associated with coastal aquaculture. It is structured to improve risk communication and to ensure that risk assessment is a scientific exercise in predicting environmental change. A set of six case studies is also presented to illustrate the use of the environmental risk assessment methodologies. These examples of environmental interactions span a range of cultured species from fin fish to molluscs and shrimp.
Book Synopsis The Future of Mariculture: a Regional Approach for Responsible Development in the Asia-Pacific Region by : Alessandro Lovatelli

This book was released on 2008 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquaculture in the Southeast Asian region has been growing steadily over the last few decades, requiring more space to accommodate it. The search for additional areas to expand the aquaculture industry as a whole and the identification of new farming species of commercial value to satisfy the growing local and export market are pushing the sector in some countries to broaden activities in the sea.
Book Synopsis Ecosystem Concepts for Sustainable Bivalve Mariculture by : National Research Council
Download or read book Ecosystem Concepts for Sustainable Bivalve Mariculture written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-03-18 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. mariculture production of bivalve molluscs-those cultivated in the marine environment-has roughly doubled over the last 25 years. Although mariculture operations may expand the production of seafood without additional exploitation of wild populations, they still depend upon and affect natural ecosystems and ecosystem services. Every additional animal has an incremental effect arising from food extraction and waste excretion. Increasing domestic seafood production in the United States in an environmentally and socially responsible way will likely require the use of policy tools, such as best management practices (BMPs) and performance standards. BMPs represent one approach to protecting against undesirable consequences of mariculture. An alternative approach to voluntary or mandatory BMPs is the establishment of performance standards for mariculture. Variability in environmental conditions makes it difficult to develop BMPs that are sufficiently flexible and adaptable to protect ecosystem integrity across a broad range of locations and conditions. An alternative that measures performance in sustaining key indicators of ecosystem state and function may be more effective. Because BMPs address mariculture methods rather than monitoring actual ecosystem responses, they do not guarantee that detrimental ecosystem impacts will be controlled or that unacceptable impact will be avoided. Ecosystem Concepts for Sustainable Bivalve Mariculture finds that while performance standards can be applied for some broad ecosystem indicators, BMPs may be more appropriate for addressing parameters that change from site to site, such as the species being cultured, different culture methods, and various environmental conditions. This book takes an in-depth look at the environmental, social, and economic issues to present recommendations for sustainable bivalve mariculture.
