Book excerpt: In the early to mid-1900s, the coal camps of Reliance, Dines, Winton, and Stansbury emerged from the hillsides and desert in southwestern Wyoming due to the increased need for coal. The miners and their families who came to these coal camps were a true melting pot, bringing with them different races, religions, and customs from all over the world. They forged unique communities and worked and lived harmoniously, depending on one another for survival, entertainment, and camaraderie. Although distanced from one another, the camps were integrated by the mines and activities of the Union Pacific Coal Company, and unified by School District No. 7, which provided the educational foundation for their children. The people who lived in these camps contributed significantly to the development of southwestern Wyoming, the economy of the state, and the welfare of the United States during wartime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Europe a poster outside a coal mine office read: Wanted- Coal Miners for American Mines- providing ocean steam passage, keep en-route, and railroad transportation- regular departure dates from the Antwerp Port. On that New Year's Day two Austrian miners responded and embarked on a great adventure to America, that great land of opportunity for the huddled masses, where they found jobs, wives, and happiness regardless of all the dangers, narrow escapes, and disappointments. In the late 1880's these two Austrian coal miner brothers were among the thousands of Europeans that immigrated to America to work in one of the many booming underground coal mines as replacement workers for the striking miners. They were looking for a better life, but instead found the same dangerous and unhealthy working conditions they had already been accustomed to. In addition they found the new adversities of foreign prejudices, squalid coal camp conditions, austere mining company practices, and increasing labor disturbances. Despite all this however they found plenty of excitement and adventure in the surrounding rip-roaring coal camps and mining towns. With the help of their steadfast friends, romantic encounters, and moonshine whiskey sedative, they eventually found a measure of happiness before a series of tragic events intervened. While the story unfolds in this authentic historic horse and buggy period and venues, the real flavor of this era is resurrected; and in addition to providing real insight into deep shaft underground mining and the miner's families, it spins a gripping action/adventure story. The two brothers get separated when one of them is accosted by some disgruntled striking miners during a mining dispute and has to go on the lam after an unfortunate triple murder in his own self-defense. He evades the pursuing posse and escapes to the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks to find work. All through the book the parallel stories are told of the two brothers in their often desperate situations. The one brother, failing to make a living off his farming, mining, and tie hacking for the expanding new railroads in the Ozark Counties, finally turns to riding with a renegade band of Bald Knobber raiders in Taney, Christian, and Ozark Counties. The other brother remains in Southeast Kansas Coal Belt. While enduring their difficulties and working their long hours for short pay, the coal miners and their families also managed to find time to enjoy their Saturday night adventures, and holiday celebrations- experiencing everything from dreary coal camp life to fancy mine convention ballrooms- from such activities as box socials, family gatherings, and quilting bees to saloon brawls, waylayings, and murders, and from pastoral picnics and hunting trips to flights to elude a pursuing posse, and riding with the Bald Knobbers. The families were saddened by the worsening of their family member's chronic 'black lung' condition and dreaded the day they might feel the rumbling earth after an explosion and the continuous wail of the steam whistle signaling trouble at the mine in the middle of the afternoon. Historic accounts are important because they create a dialogue across the generations. Readers drawn in by such stories also learn the related history along on the journey. Today who would ever know that deep shaft miners and their families had ever once lived and worked here? It is now no more than a dream remembered; a civilization buried and gone in an era that has almost disappeared into the past. Yet some of us in these succeeding generations can still hear those voices calling to us from across the years. Whatever our ancestors were, they are ours, the only ones that we will ever have. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIRTY MINES is a story about coal mining in Pennsylvania. For the first time many of the jobs performed by boys, as young as 8 years old, are described in detail. Cesar D'Angelo was 10 when his father was killed in the mines. Cesar, the oldest boy in his family, had to take his father's place working for the coal company. His first job was working high up in the dangerous coal breakers. At the age of 12 he went down into the blackish, coal dusted mines to begin his long mining career. His first job was sitting in the dark alone for 10 to 12 hours a day as a door keeper. Later he became a spragger, mule driver, and had various other jobs until becoming a lifetime coal miner. DIRTY MINES also addresses the rich history of this era; including the miscarriage of justice towards the Molly Maguires in their fight for union rights and the environmental disaster at the Knox Coal company that ended coal mining in North Eastern Pennsylvania. This is a family story about the last generation of Scranton coal miners. It is a fascinating and warm narrative of sacrifice, humor, and love. A revealing story about a forgotten way of life in difficult times, with very little pay in horrible working conditions. It's an anecdotal story of courage and tenacity of poor deprived coal miners that struggled to make a better life for their children. Their historic sacrifices are being passed on to a new generation, so their unique heritage will never be forgotten.

Book excerpt: In the 1940s coal camp of Stansbury, Wyoming, life revolved around the underground mine, community, and family. In many ways, it was the idyllic model town Union Pacific Coal had built it to be. Families had homes with indoor plumbing, children enjoyed friendship and freedom, and the men had a steady income. But demand for coal waned, and then one day unexpectedly the whistle blew and Wood s life turned upside down. Wood writes honestly and compellingly about mines and miners, coal camp kids, miners wives, company towns, letting go, and acceptance.

Book excerpt: Glencoe was just one of Wyoming's many small coal camps that was established in the early twentieth century. Some coal camps survived beyond World War II, some lasted a little longer and some flourished and grew into the great coal producing towns of the twenty-first which still supply coal for the nation. Though Glencoe's history is brief, it is rich in the stories of her hardworking people-the miners and their families, the union, the schools and the mine itself. Though life in that small coal camp was hard, the people pulled together to create a rich sense of community and the times were not devoid of simple entertainment, of fun and of friends. As they did in Echoes of Elkol, Dorothy Wright and her collaborators have once again pieced together the story of a small coal mining community in southwestern Wyoming and its two even smaller neighbors, Blazon and Star Mine. Gathering information from all quarters-oral histories, historical records, photos from the archives and from family collections and newspaper accounts- and weaving it together into the cloth of a memorable story that has been all but lost until now. Here, in Glencoe, Spelling Out Western Coal Camp History, the past has been made whole and available to anyone who values the story of the people who have contributed to the history of Wyoming and, indeed, the country.

The industry that followed created towns and canals and established a new way of life. The first shipment of coal rolled into Columbus in 1830 and has continued ever since. In 1890, the United Mine Workers of America was founded in Columbus. Lorenzo D. Poston became the first of the Hocking Valley coal barons, and by the start of the twentieth century, at least fifty thousand coal miners and their families lived and worked in Athens, Hocking and Perry Counties. Authors David Meyers, Elise Meyers Walker and Nyla Vollmer detail the hard work and struggles as they unfolded in Ohio's capital and the Little Cities of Black Diamonds.

Book excerpt: At the beginning of the twentieth century, hundreds of thousands of European immigrants came to northeastern Pennsylvania to work in the coal mines. Stories from the Mines chronicles the struggle of these miners to earn a decent wage, alleviate dangerous working conditions, and gain respect. The perilous work the miners performed for extremely low pay, Matkosky and Currà argue, laid the foundation for America's Industrial Revolution and the modern labor movement. This powerful book traces the miners' epic human rights battle from their arrival in the United States to the Great Strike of 1902 and the inception of the United Mine Workers. Its companion documentary, available separately on DVD, blends dramatic reenactments and never-before-seen archival footage and photographs to recount a conflict that inspired the involvement of Clarence Darrow and Theodore Roosevelt. Stories from the Mines highlights the indelible contribution to America's history made by anthracite coal and the men who mined it.

Book excerpt: Roslyn has always been known by its superlatives. It began life as one of the wildest coal camps in the state, grew into the headquarters of Washington's largest coal mine company and often boasted the highest coal tonnage in the Pacific Northwest. In recent years, Roslyn has become a recreational haven and a must stop for fans of TV's Northern Exposure. Missing today, however, is the coal industry that gave life to this patch of forest on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains. Tipples have been torn down and mine entrances boarded up, railroad tracks ripped out, and the company store closed, leaving behind a community with a different heart and soul than the one that gave it life. Most settlers came to mine, a few opened businesses, all were ruled by the rhythms of a coal mining culture that followed the maxim to "work hard, play hard, drink hard." Roslyn Through Time chronicles Roslyn's evolution from a coal camp to its glory years as an industrial center, through its years of decline as the mines closed, and to today's efforts to embrace its past in order to preserve its future.
