Book excerpt: The 1967 Lignite Symposium was held at Grand Forks, N. Dak., on April 27-28, 1967. This was the fifth of these technical meetings and the fourth which was cosponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines. These symposia have provided a meeting place where current developments concerning technology and utilization of solid fuels (lignite) are presented. There was a registration of 255 persons from 24 States, the District of Columbia, six Canadian Provinces, Germany, and India. Many segments of coal or energy oriented organizations at many levels were represented. During the meeting, 18 presentations were made covering developments in electrical power generation, mining, estimation of reserves, combustion, gasification, and chemical and speciality uses of low-rank coals; these are compiled in this Information Circular to provide a record of the symposium and to permit wider dissemination of the information. Proceedings of the other meetings have also been published.

Book excerpt: Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) requested that Sargent and Lundy prepare a technology characterization for the production of high Btu synthetic natural gas from coal by the Lurgi process. The scope of work was to be confined to a literature review of the coal gasification process including the processes from the coal mine to the final production of high Btu synthetic gas. The following factors were identified by ANL for inclusion in the report: Energy and material balances, description of the process steps and process flow diagrams, listing of inputs and outputs including effluents and residuals, description of plant construction, description of plant operation and estimation of the manpower required to operate the plant, short description of plant decommissioning, identification of any equipment impediments for construction and operation, and identification of any problems resulting from the mining of coal for the plant. The report was to include a sensitivity analysis for the use of Illinois coal versus North Dakota lignite. The size of the plant considered was to be in the 250-MMSCFD (million standard cubic feet per day) range. The report does not include an assessment of the market potential for the product gas, its end use, or information concerning pipeline requirements for transport of the gas. Published cost estimates in the literature have been identified but original cost estimates have not been provided. Plant layouts, conceptual designs, and socioeconomic analyses are not provided.

Book excerpt: The 1965 Lignite Symposium, the fourth in a series and the third sponsored by the University of North Dakota, and the Bureau of Mines, was held at Bismark, N. Dak., on April 29-30, 1965. These symposia provide a forum for those interested in the technology and utilization of solid fuels, especially lignitic coals. As part of the meeting, a 200-mile field trip was taken including inspection of (1) the 200-metawatt, pulverized lignite-fired Leland Olds plant of Basin Electric Power Cooperative, under construction near Stanton, N. Dak.; (2) the site of the Glenharold mine of the Truax-Traer Coal Co., Division of Consolidation Coal Co., where a wheel excavator was being assembled; (3) the operating Beulah mine of Knife River Coal Mining Co., subsidiary fo Montana Dakota Utilities Co., near Beulah, N. Dak.; and (4) the 400-megawatt, hydroelectric Garrison Dam powerplant, near Garrison, N. Dak. During the technical sessions, 13 papers were presented covering some the recent trends, development, and research in lignite technology. The text of these papers is compiled to provide a record of the symposium and to allow wider dissemination of the information. Proceedings of the previous symposia have been published.
