This qualitative study explored how nine student-athletes at a large, public institution college experiences influenced their career decision-making processes. Past literature on student-athletes has focused on academic challenges, the Jock Stereotype, minimal campus engagement, and the lack of ability to make realistic career decisions. This study suggests that student-athletes are aware of the importance to prepare for their lives beyond their intercollegiate careers. From the shared stories of participant student-athletes, five themes emerged, (a) college choice process, (b) academics, (c) campus engagement (d) career evolution, and (e) awareness of sacrifices and advantages. Participant student-athletes stories emphasized the importance of building stronger relationships on campus. The results also demonstrated the need to implement stronger career development services while they navigate the complexities of their dual roles. Policy and practice implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: Student-athletes have been shown in the literature to have a defined experience that is different from non-athletes. The challenges student-athletes face at the Division III (DIII) level and a lack of research raises curiosity regarding their career development. The purpose of this qualitative narrative study was to investigate female DIII student-athletes meaning-making regarding major selection using the Career Construction Interview (CCI) and the ways major choices are confirmed or challenged by their own defined life story. The participants of this study included 7 Caucasian traditional-age female student-athletes who exhibited strong athletic identities (utilizing the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale) attending a DIII institution located in the Midwest. Data were collected through semi-structured, open-ended interviews and the CCI, and analyzed using processes of restorying, life design counseling, and holistic-content analysis. The findings of this study indicate that telling, hearing, and retelling their stories were individually impactful and transformative. This study identified three themes across the narratives, which documented the influence of sports, minimal career support, and affirmation of their major decisions as shared experiences among the participants. Implications of the findings point to the need for intentionality surrounding career interventions in DIII post-secondary institutions for athletes and non-athletes. Results of this study revealed that even students with a chosen major can benefit from reflecting on their career stories. These results point to the opportunity to meet the career needs of student-athletes and the general student body with curriculum such as a constructivist career course designed around the CCI.

The college athlete is more likely to struggle with ED pathology given the developmental time period, personality characteristics, cultural influences, and impacts of athletic identity and athletic culture. Collegiate coaches have a large influence on the development of student athletes’ mental health and well-being through their direct and indirect messages. This influence can be further impacted by variables such as the roles of the coach, the roles of the athlete, personal influences, and responsibilities. Given the complexity of the coach-athlete relationship, it is important for coaches to ensure messages conveyed to athletes are clear, supportive, and direct to avoid inadvertently increasing the risk of ED pathology. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has indicated a need for experiential training regarding how coaches should address mental health influences impacting their athletes, such as with EDs. Since coaches are simultaneously considering both individual and systemic influences, critical thinking is a beneficial skill to understand the complex variables of communication, especially as it pertains to perspective-taking. Therefore, this project is designed to educate coaches about disordered eating (DE)/ED presentations in student-athletes and introduce the importance of the multiple factors impacting communication. Awareness of such influences can create alternative messages aimed at supporting athletic physical health and mental well-being in addition to overall athletic success.

As the demand for and intensity of collegiate sports continue to grow, there is a need to understand the sport enviornment and assist in the development of environments conducive to the well-being of student-athletes. This study used the vocational and industrial-organizational theory of person-environment fit to concptualize the collegiate sport environment as it shares numerous characteristics with a work environment. This study examined the relationships between the perceived cohesion student-athletes experience with their coaches and teammates and their motivation to perform. The impact of three moderators (athletic identity, sex, and sport type) on the cohesion - motivation relationship was also examined. Using data collected from 219 male and female collegiate student-athletes, hierarchical multiple regressions tested the effects of the perceived coach-athlete relationship and team-athlete relationship on predicting athletes' motivation to perform as well as the moderating effects of athletic identity, sex, and sport type. The athletes' perceived coach-athlete cohesion, team-athlete cohesion, and athletic identity (i.e., the degree to which an individual identifies with the athlete role) predicted the intrinsic and self-determined motivation levels of student-athletes. Athletic identity moderated the relationship between perceived team-athlete cohesion and motivation; sport type moderated the relationship between perceived coach-athlete cohesion and motivation. For student-athletes who reported a low athletic identity, perceived cohesion with their team was more predictive of their motivation levels than it was for those who had higher athletic identity. The degree to which they perceived cohesion with coach was more strongly predictive of self-determined motivation levels for student-athletes of individual sports compared to student-athletes involved in team sports. Clinical implications of the findings and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Abstract The Social Cognitive Career Theory was applied to examine how the desire to coach or administrate are impacted by self-efficacy, occupational valence, perceived hindrance, and role model influence. This study was conducted to address the underrepresentation of females in collegiate sports leadership positions. The study examined if being coached by males or if males in leadership positions is preferred. Women coach less than half, (40.2%) of women0́9s sports and women account for 19.6% percent of administrators in college athletic departments. Hypothetically, the results of this study will support and enhance the NCAA college sports model by revealing quantitative data that provide a foundation for understanding the problems and identifying key factors important to the leadership development of female student-athletes. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, MANOVAs, and path analysis. Everhart and Chelladurai (1998) stated that female athletes preferred male coaches and that female athletes that had male coaches were more likely to perceive discrimination as a barrier. The study0́9s finding is that collegiate female student-athletes had a high perception of female coaches and female administrators and a preference for female coaches.

This research study took place in the southeast region of the United States of America. Six collegiate basketball coaches were interviewed to understand how the values of their coaching philosophy influenced their decision making when leading a Division II basketball program within the guiding principles of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Collegiate Model of Athletics. According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Collegiate Model of Athletics mandates that each of its associated members provide a balanced academic, social, and athletic student-athlete experience. Three streams of literature pertaining to coaching philosophy, competition, and mental toughness served as a foundation for the research study. Data were collected through observations, one-on-one interviews, focus group interviews, and artifact collection to understand participant perceptions regarding the purpose of the research study. Several findings emerged based on outcomes that developed from the central research question and three sub-research questions. These findings consisted of the following grounded theories: Basketball is a tool to teach life lessons, Support systems promote holistic student-athlete development, Negative influences hinder holistic student-athlete development, and Team culture creates guiding principles. An integrated grounded theory emerged in this research study based on the four grounded theories associated with each research question. The integrated grounded theory was, A holistic development coaching approach is needed to provide a balanced academic, social, and athletic student-athlete experience. This integrated grounded theory warranted implications for coaching practices which suggest that collegiate basketball coaches should view their coaching responsibility as a multifaceted leadership role focused on the holistic well-being and overall development of student-athletes. Recommendations that emerged from this research study include strategies for optimizing the academic, social, and athletic student-athlete experience through coaching practices, future research, and coaching policy.

Book excerpt: This thesis aimed to develop an understanding of the social and environmental influences on athlete motivation, and the way these change across the athlete career span. Study 1 set out to explore the social and environmental influences of coaches, parents and peers on the motivation of young athletes (under 12 years old), at the initiation/sampling stage of their careers. Forty participants (7-11 years of age) from a variety of sports were interviewed in focus groups, using a semi-structured format to investigate the roles played by coaches, parents, and peers in influencing athlete motivation. An inductive content analysis was conducted to determine which behaviours among these social agents influenced key motivational outcomes. The young athletes described motivational influences which showed consistencies with existing models of motivation, but which also expanded upon these models in terms of both the specificity of behaviours identified, and also the comprehensive nature of the findings. The influences of coaches related most strongly to the manner in which they perform their roles of instruction and assessment, whereas parents influences were most salient in terms of the way they support the child s participation and learning. Both parents and coaches exerted influences through their leadership styles, affective responses and pre-performance behaviours. Peers influenced participants motivation through competitive behaviours, collaborative behaviours, evaluative communications and through their social relationships. This study provides an insight into the socioenvironmental influences on motivation experienced by young athletes, as well as helping to delineate the different roles of social agents in influencing their motivation at this early stage of development. Study 2 qualitatively examined the motivationally relevant behaviours of key social agents in athletes at the specialising career stage. Seventy-nine participants (9-18 years old) from 26 sports participated in semi-structured focus-groups investigating how coaches, parents, and peers may influence motivation. Using a critical-realist perspective, an inductive content-analysis indicated that specialising athletes perceived a multitude of motivationally-relevant social cues. Coaches and parents influences were related to their specific roles: instruction/assessment for coaches, support-and-facilitation for parents. Peers influenced motivation through competitive behaviours, collaborative behaviours, evaluative communications and through their social relationships. The results were consistent with Study 1 in terms of returning an analysis based around the different roles performed by social agents in relation to the ways that athlete motivation can be influenced. Study 3 examined the socio-environmental influences of coaches, parents and peers on the motivation of elite athletes. Twenty-nine elite sport participants (15-29 years old) took part in semi-structured focus groups or interviews investigating how coaches, parents, and peers influenced their motivation. An inductive content analysis was performed using a critical realist approach. Coaches and peers were reported to be focal influences, whilst the role of parents appeared to be decreased relative to other career-stages; being limited to emotional and moral support. Themes of feedback/evaluation, and pre-performance motivating behaviours were common to all social agents, whilst the coach-athlete and peer-athlete relationships appeared to be important in mediating and directly influencing motivation. The influences of social agents related to their specific roles: instruction/leadership for coaches; whilst peer-influences revolved around collaborative and competitive behaviours and emotional support. The discussion chapter took the form of a meta-interpretive synthesis of research findings concerning social and environmental influences on athlete motivation across the career-span. From a total of 124 papers that qualified for initial consideration 45 contributed to the final analysis. This chapter presents models of motivational processes that are intended to contribute new ideas and stimulate thinking in the area. The final analysis proposes a horizontal structure relating to athletic career developments, and a vertical structure detailing general dimensions of the overall motivationally relevant social environment. From this, the relative influences of coaches, parents and peers were ideographically assessed, suggesting that the influence of peers grows over the athletic career, whilst the relative influence of parents decreases. Finally, a meteorological model is presented, with a view to facilitating the joint consideration of numerous motivationally relevant variables, reflecting the proposed complex interactivity and interdependence identified throughout this thesis. In this chapter, the term motivational atmosphere is proposed in order to represent the extremely broad, complex and interactive nature of the socio-environmental influences on athlete motivation. The thesis concludes with the consideration of the theoretical and applied implications of the studies conducted.
