Book excerpt: For the sort of dreams that humans have while asleep, you will have to consult other books. This book is not about bad dreams or nightmares either. This book is about dreams in real life that are dashed by death, divorce, moves, loss of a job, or a loss of a relationship. Hence, these are grieving dreams or dream death. The circumstances of life, for us all bring loss into our lives. Some loss is self actuated, other loss is from the actions of others, while other losses just happen in what we call, “acts of God†. In every loss there is a “dream dimension†to the loss. The “what would have been, what should have been, or what could have been,†is the dream element of the loss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often bereaved adolescent students’ needs are not adequately addressed in the school setting. Recent research is claiming that adolescents grieve differently from adults. Understanding adolescents’ developmental stages, their perception of death, their many possible responses to grief, and the factors that foster their potential for positive adjustment to their loss as well as possessing knowledge of effective intervention theories and strategies is necessary if school counselors hope to properly support bereaved adolescents. Comprehensive school counseling programs that offer grieving students the opportunity to process their grief within the context of a counseling small group gives them what has been described as a needed sense of universality and commonality that many who have experienced loss are desperately seeking. This project addresses the creation of a grief-focused counseling small group in an urban public high school setting that has not previously been able to meet bereaved students’ unique needs. Meeting all students’ emotional needs is one of the responsibilities placed on school counselors. This project culminates in the creation of a grief-focused counseling small group based on the findings that are reported in research as impactful. The small group sessions include lessons and activities founded upon best practice and interventions that have proven successful with adolescents. This project can be utilized in any school setting that is supporting grieving adolescents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are a death phobic society. Consequently, we provide very little help to our citizens in dealing with the one common denominator that we all face, the death of those we love. The paucity of death education programs in our elementary and secondary schools is evident of our death avoidance culture. Although many of our schools do attempt to assist the thousands of children and adolescents yearly who lose parents, siblings, and other loved ones, their efforts tend to focus on how to assist the newly bereaved student in the days immediately following the loss. Very few schools have a long term approach that extends far beyond the immediate crisis, seeking to assist students with the life altering changes that follow the death of a family member. Dr. Luciano Sabatini, a former school counselor and director of guidance, offers a guide to school based professionals, especially those involved in crisis counseling, on how to assist students through crisis intervention teams, educational awareness and support groups. He shares his experiences in working with bereaved students and what he has learned from them in coming to terms with a devastating loss. He also offers school leaders best practices in supporting grieving students and in managing a school grieving the death of a student.
