Book excerpt: The present volume collects selected papers arising from lectures delivered by the authors at the School on Fuzzy Logic and Soft Computing held during the years 1996/97/98/99 and sponsored by the Salerno University. The authors contributing to this volume agreed with editors to write down, to enlarge and, in many cases, to rethink their original lectures, in order to offer to readership, a more compact presentation of the proposed topics. The aim of the volume is to offer a picture, as a job in progress, of the effort that is coming in founding and developing soft computing's techniques. The volume contains papers aimed to report on recent results containing genuinely logical aspects of fuzzy logic. The topics treated in this area cover algebraic aspects of Lukasiewicz Logic, Fuzzy Logic as the logic of continuous t-norms, Intuitionistic Fuzzy Logic. Aspects of fuzzy logic based on similar ity relation are presented in connection with the problem of flexible querying in deductive database. Departing from fuzzy logic, some papers present re sults in Probability Logic treating computational aspects, results based on indishernability relation and a non commutative version of generalized effect algebras. Several strict applications of soft computing are presented in the book. Indeed we find applications ranging among pattern recognition, image and signal processing, evolutionary agents, fuzzy cellular networks, classi fication in fuzzy environments. The volume is then intended to serve as a reference work for foundational logico-algebraic aspect of Soft Computing and for concrete applications of soft computing technologies.

Book excerpt: Multi-Valued and Universal Binary Neurons deals with two new types of neurons: multi-valued neurons and universal binary neurons. These neurons are based on complex number arithmetic and are hence much more powerful than the typical neurons used in artificial neural networks. Therefore, networks with such neurons exhibit a broad functionality. They can not only realise threshold input/output maps but can also implement any arbitrary Boolean function. Two learning methods are presented whereby these networks can be trained easily. The broad applicability of these networks is proven by several case studies in different fields of application: image processing, edge detection, image enhancement, super resolution, pattern recognition, face recognition, and prediction. The book is hence partitioned into three almost equally sized parts: a mathematical study of the unique features of these new neurons, learning of networks of such neurons, and application of such neural networks. Most of this work was developed by the first two authors over a period of more than 10 years and was only available in the Russian literature. With this book we present the first comprehensive treatment of this important class of neural networks in the open Western literature. Multi-Valued and Universal Binary Neurons is intended for anyone with a scholarly interest in neural network theory, applications and learning. It will also be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the fields of image processing, pattern recognition, control and robotics.

It is well known that FOS can be applied in control applications and systems modeling, and their effectiveness has been proven in many theoretical works and simulation routines. A further and mandatory step for FOS real world utilization is their hardware implementation and applications on real systems modeling. With this viewpoint, introductive chapters on FOS are included, on the definition of stability region of Fractional Order PID Controller and Chaotic FOS, followed by the practical implementation based on Microcontroller, Field Programmable Gate Array, Field Programmable Analog Array and Switched Capacitor. Another section is dedicated to FO modeling of Ionic Polymeric Metal Composite (IPMC). This new material may have applications in robotics, aerospace and biomedicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underlying most of the IWANN calls for papers is the aim to reassume some of the motivations of the groundwork stages of biocybernetics and the later bionics formulations and to try to reconsider the present value of two basic questions. The?rstoneis:“Whatdoesneurosciencebringintocomputation(thenew bionics)?” That is to say, how can we seek inspiration in biology? Titles such as “computational intelligence”, “arti?cial neural nets”, “genetic algorithms”, “evolutionary hardware”, “evolutive architectures”, “embryonics”, “sensory n- romorphic systems”, and “emotional robotics” are representatives of the present interest in “biological electronics” (bionics). Thesecondquestionis:“Whatcanreturncomputationtoneuroscience(the new neurocybernetics)?” That is to say, how can mathematics, electronics, c- puter science, and arti?cial intelligence help the neurobiologists to improve their experimental data modeling and to move a step forward towards the understa- ing of the nervous system? Relevant here are the general philosophy of the IWANN conferences, the sustained interdisciplinary approach, and the global strategy, again and again to bring together physiologists and computer experts to consider the common and pertinent questions and the shared methods to answer these questions.

Book excerpt: This book deals with new theoretical results for studyingCellular Neural Networks (CNNs) concerning its dynamical behavior. Newaspects of CNNs' applications are developed for modelling of somefamous nonlinear partial differential equations arising in biology, genetics, neurophysiology, physics, ecology, etc. The analysis ofCNNs' models is based on the harmonic balance method well known incontrol theory and in the study of electronic oscillators. Suchphenomena as hysteresis, bifurcation and chaos are studied for CNNs.The topics investigated in the book involve several scientificdisciplines, such as dynamical systems, applied mathematics, mathematical modelling, information processing, biology andneurophysiology. The reader will find comprehensive discussion on thesubject as well as rigorous mathematical analyses of networks ofneurons from the view point of dynamical systems. The text is writtenas a textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate students inapplied mathematics. Providing a summary of recent results on dynamicsand modelling of CNNs, the book will also be of interest to allresearchers in the area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chips in present-day cell phones already contain billions of sub-100-nanometer transistors. By 2020, however, we will see systems-on-chips with trillions of 10-nanometer transistors. But this will be the end of the miniaturization, because yet smaller transistors, containing just a few control atoms, are subject to statistical fluctuations and thus no longer useful. We also need to worry about a potential energy crisis, because in less than five years from now, with current chip technology, the internet alone would consume the total global electrical power! This book presents a new, sustainable roadmap towards ultra-low-energy (femto-Joule), high-performance electronics. The focus is on the energy-efficiency of the various chip functions: sensing, processing, and communication, in a top-down spirit involving new architectures such as silicon brains, ultra-low-voltage circuits, energy harvesting, and 3D silicon technologies. Recognized world leaders from industry and from the research community share their views of this nanoelectronics future. They discuss, among other things, ubiquitous communication based on mobile companions, health and care supported by autonomous implants and by personal carebots, safe and efficient mobility assisted by co-pilots equipped with intelligent micro-electromechanical systems, and internet-based education for a billion people from kindergarden to retirement. This book should help and interest all those who will have to make decisions associated with future electronics: students, graduates, educators, and researchers, as well as managers, investors, and policy makers. Book excerpt: After a long period, in which the research focused mainly on industrial robotics, nowadays scientists aim to build machines able to act autonomously in unstructured domains, and to interface friendly with humans, while performing intelligently their assigned tasks. Such intelligent autonomous systems are now being intensively developed, and are ready to be applied to every field, from social life to modern enterprises. We believe the following years will be increasingly characterised by their extensive use. This is dramatically changing the whole scenario of human society.

Book excerpt: Autonomous and nonautonomous Chua''s circuits are of special significance in the study of chaotic system modeling, chaos-based science and engineering applications. Since hardware and software-based design and implementation approaches can be applied to Chua''s circuits, these circuits are also excellent educative models for studying and experimenting nonlinear dynamics and chaos. This book not only presents a collection of the author''s published papers on design, simulation and implementation of Chua''s circuits, it also provides a systematic approach to practising chaotic dynamics.
