Book excerpt: Family prejudice forces a young couple to flee to Glasgow in World War One, where tragedy and deceit shapes their future. They called her Auld Nally - the local moneylender in one of Glasgow's roughest areas, Inchcraig. But once she'd been Alice McInally from Belfast, beautiful and beloved by her childhood sweetheart. Though his family was Catholic and her Protestant, their families had been close for generations, and the young couple were too naive to anticipate the angry opposition their marriage plans would unleash. Their only hope is to leave Ireland, knowing they will be cast out by their well-to-do families and can never go home again. But the couple's dream of a bright future founders in the realities of war-torn Glasgow, and Alice ends up struggling to make ends meet in the only way she can. Somehow she must protect the children in her care, even if that means relying on the man Inchcraig knows as 'him', and living among people far from her background, people she comes to like and admire and doesn't want to leave. Every day, though, she must live with a lie told many years ago with the best of intentions, a lie that could unravel and destroy everything, unless she can find the exact time to put it right...

Download or read book Western Ferries written by Roy Pedersen and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1960s, drawing on Scandinavian experience, Western Ferries pioneered roll-on roll off ferry operations in Scotland's West Highlands and Islands. This innovative company's original focus, was Islay, where its hitherto undreamt of frequency of service transformed that island's access to the outside world. The company's profitable and efficient operation was, however, deliberately sabotaged by heavily subsidised predatory pricing by the feather-bedded state owned competitor. This shameful policy, initiated at the highest political level, has been uncovered by recently released official correspondence held in the Scottish archives. The Islay service eventually succumbed, but the company's service across the Firth of Clyde between Inverclyde and Cowal, not only survived, but, in the face of many challenges, flourished to become by far Scotland's busiest and most profitable ferry route. Its modern cherry red ferries run like clockwork, from early till late, 365 days a year, employing some 60 people locally. It contributes much back into the community it serves including free emergency runs, whenever required, in the middle of the night. What made all this possible was the extraordinary dedication of a succession of enthusiastic, determined and above all colourful individuals. This is their story.

Book Synopsis The Coming of the Comet by : Nick Robins
Download or read book The Coming of the Comet written by Nick Robins and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-10 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1812 Henry BellÍs Comet, a revolutionary paddle steamer, made her first journey on the Clyde. This marked the start of extraordinary developments that completely transformed shipping and transport in Britain, Europe and the Americas. The paddle steamer soon became the key link with Empire, pushing the Honourable East India CompanyÍs wooden walls off the seas; it provided the all- important link with the Americas, and it offered emigrants to the New World a means of pushing westwards. ??In this fascinating new book Nick Robins analyses the remarkable impact of the paddle steamer and goes on to describe its development, both in terms of technology design and in relation to its effects on the transformation of nineteenth-century economies. He includes all Henry Bells disciples - the Burns brothers, Laird, Napier, Fulton, Syminton Cunard and Denny to name a few, and looks at their individual contributions. ??The impact of the paddle steamer on transport is difficult to overstate. It helped with the export of cotton from the American southern states, and with the transport of oil from BurmaÍs oil fields. The great stern wheelers of the Mississipi are legendary, but they also migrated to the Murray and Darling rivers in Australia, and to the Congo and Nile rivers in Africa, and the great rivers of Russia.??This wonderful story of nineteenth-century ingenuity will appeal to shipping enthusiasts and those with a wider interest in industrial history.
