Now the gifted author-artist tells the story of Janet, who lives in a house on top of a big hill. Her parents think it's like living in the clouds. But Janet thinks living in a more sensible house like Aunt Peppy and Uncle Tim's might be better--a house where beds are always made and dishes always washed. Janet spends the weekend with Aunt Peppy and Uncle Tim, but one morning she sees something magical and needs to share it with the people who understand magic best--her parents. Her story will have young readers on the lookout for the extraordinary in their everyday world, too.

Download or read book Clouds written by Caroline Dakers and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is essentially a study of British aristocratic and artistic patronage of the arts in the under-explored period after 1850, approached through an intensive look at a single house - Clouds, known as the house of the age. It was built by the glamorous and unconventionally gifted Percy and Madeline Wyndham, and designed by Philip Webb, one of Britain's greatest architects. It became one of the centres of artistic and political life in late-Victorian and Edwardian Britain, and set the style for a whole generation of country house living. Dakers recreates the atmosphere and the lives lived in the house, the personalities of its three generations of Wyndham owners, and the succession of distinguished guests drawn to it - Henry James, Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Kipling, Whistler and Lord Alfred Douglas, amongst many others. She tracks the decline in the tradition of aristocratic patronage through a decline in the fortunes of Clouds itself - by the 1930s, the palace of art was a vast white elephant, and the house was sold to an institution, its treasures dispersed and its structure dynamited into a more usable space.

Book excerpt: This novel is based on first-hand accounts of life during WW2 in southern France. The genesis and principal events of the novel were recounted some seventy years after the fact by a close friend: architect, scholar, father, government official, musician. When the occupation began, he joined the Résistance, helping people escape France. As the war continued, he became dangerously caught up in resistance, transporting charcoal from Spain. In March 1943, the Gestapo arrested him following an all-night jam session with Django Reinhardt and Georges Ulmer (neither arrested). The Americans liberated him from Buchenwald in April 1945. As a recipient of the Légion d'Honneur, among numerous other decorations, his story lies at the heart of this novel. He spent hours recounting his life during the war, literally with great pain. Although making this exception, his war-time experience never left his mind a single day of his long life.
