CHAPTER V CHARACTERS AND CONTRASTS--CLOUDS OF INVERSION 51. Before proceeding with a detailed description of the clouds under this heading, it may be advisable, even at the price of repetition, to place before the reader the broad distinction in formation between these clouds and those dealt with in the previous chapter. This distinction is, that whereas clouds of Interfret are caused by the interaction of more or less horizontal currents of different velocities or directions, clouds of Inversion are caused by condensation in an upward direction in more or less vertical currents, although the shape of the clouds of the latter class may be affected by differences of velocity and direction in the horizontal movements of the air. Cumulo-rudimen turn 52. Many misleading titles, such as Fracto-cumulus and Cumulo-frustum, have been applied to this wellknown cloud, but these, as we shall see later, lead us to erroneously presuppose that the cloud is a brokendown and degraded form of Cumulus. The range of altitude of the rudimentary cloud is small. The mean altitude, as given in Table III., is 1500 feet (458 m.) above mean sea-level. But in reference to this variety of cloud it is important to observe that in the tropical and extra-tropical latitudes the level is higher in summer than in winter, and that the alteration of level is greater over the land than over the open sea, For the heating of the floor of the atmosphere causes vapour to remain in the state of vapour near that floor, and raises the level at which condensation is possible; and it is the atmosphere which exists over a land-surface which has its temperature specially raised by insolation, since the solid surface conducts less heat downward than the liquid, and parts with more heat...

Download or read book Clouds written by Richard Hamblyn and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clouds have been objects of delight and fascination throughout human history, their fleeting magnificence and endless variety having inspired scientists and daydreamers alike. Described by Aristophanes as “the patron goddesses of idle men,” clouds and the ever-changing patterns they create have long symbolized the restlessness and unpredictability of nature, and yet they are also the source of life-giving rains. In this book, Richard Hamblyn examines clouds in their cultural, historic, and scientific contexts, exploring their prevalence in our skies as well as in our literature, art, and music. As Hamblyn shows, clouds function not only as a crucial means of circulating water around the globe but also as a finely tuned thermostat regulating the planet’s temperature. He discusses the many different kinds of clouds, from high, scattered cirrus clouds to the plump thought-bubbles of cumulus clouds, even exploring man-made clouds and clouds on other planets. He also shows how clouds have featured as meaningful symbols in human culture, whether as ominous portents of coming calamities or as ethereal figures giving shape to the heavens, whether in Wordsworth’s poetry or today’s tech speak. Comprehensive yet compact, cogent and beautifully illustrated, this is the ultimate guidebook to those shapeshifters of the sky.

Book Synopsis Sensing Art in the Atmosphere by : Sasha Engelmann
Download or read book Sensing Art in the Atmosphere written by Sasha Engelmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book engages artistic interventions in the aerial elements to investigate the aesthetics and politics of atmosphere. Sensing Art in the Atmosphere: Elemental Lures and Aerosolar Practices traces the potential of artistic, community-driven experiments to amplify our sensing of atmosphere, marrying attentions to atmospheric affect with visceral awareness of the materials, institutions and processes hovering in the air. Drawing on six years of practice-led research with artistic and activist initiatives Museo Aero Solar and Aerocene, initiated by artist Tomás Saraceno, each chapter develops creative relations to atmosphere from the studio to stratospheric currents. Through narrative-led writing, the voices of artists and collaborators are situated and central. In dialogue with these aerographic stories and sites, the book develops a notion of elemental lures: the sensual and imaginative propositions of aerial, atmospheric and meteorological phenomena. The promise of elemental lures, Engelmann suggests, is to reconcile our sensing of atmosphere with the myriad social, cultural and political forces suspended in it. Through tales of floating journeys, shared envelopes of breath and surreal levitations, the book foregrounds the role of art in crafting alternative modes of perceiving, moving and imagining (in) the air. The book ends with a call for elemental experiments in the geohumanities. It makes an important and original contribution to elemental geographies, the geohumanities and interdisciplinary scholarship on air and atmosphere.
