Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the combustion characteristics of a Hivelite-based, very-high-burn-rate (VHBR) propellant was conducted. The experiments were performed in a closed chamber, called the VHBR bomb, that was specially designed and constructed for these experiments. The device was designed with the same diameter as the propellant samples in order to maintain one dimensional combustion processes and transient wave phenomena to simplify subsequent interpretation and analysis. Propellant combustion was characterized by a low burn rate (about 1 m/s) until a pressure in the vicinity of 15-20 MPa is reached. After this pressure, which may represent the propellant crushing or break pressure, the combustion rate accelerated to levels from 10 to 180 m/s, depending on other test parameters. Tests conducted at different loading densities indicated that combustion rate was a strong function of pressure. Variation of sample weight at constant loading density demonstrated that increasing the amount of unburned propellant at the time the break pressure was reached also causes burn rate and thrust to increase. A coating that makes the outside surface of the sample slippery tended to reduce the apparent burn rate but use of a coating which retarded transmission of gas pressure along the periphery of the sample increased the apparent burn rate as well as thrust. Change of mounting interface properties caused significant differences in the dynamic characteristics leading to increased thrust.

Book excerpt: A series of closed bomb combustion tests were conducted on several very high burning rate (VHBR) propellants in which, in addition to the standard pressure measurements, the thrust produced by a burning propellant column was measured using a dynamic force gage located at the end of the propellant column. The results indicate that in several instances the total force imparted to the force gage substantially exceeded that due to the gas pressure alone. The difference is ascribed to the thrust or impulse resulting from very high apparent burning rates. In fact, an analysis of the data for two VHBR propellants indicates that effective burning rates from 100 to 300 m/s are required to produce the observed thrust levels. Such burning rates are not yet explainable by conventional combustion models. Additional physical processes such as convective flamespread or stress-induced surface fracture must be invoked to explain such high apparent burning rates.

Book excerpt: The burning and impetus characteristics of a family of very high burning rate (VHBR) boron-hydride-based propellants were determined using the closed chamber technique. A systematic examination of burning behaviour vs chemical composition was made. The samples studied included bare, steel cased, and larger full bore cylindrical samples. Pressure time data were reduced to apparent linear burning rates using the conventional laminar burning assumptions made in closed chamber reductions. The results indicate that tailoring sample burning rates between 1 and 500 m/s may be possible. On the other hand, unlike conventional propellants, VHBR propellant burning rates are thought to depend not only on sample formulation but also on porosity, physical integrity, sample diameter, and confinement. These results point to a possible burning-with-breakup mechanism for these materials.

Book excerpt: Closed chamber firings of very-high burning rate (VHBR) propellants have been conducted at the Ballistic Research Laboratory as part of the traveling charge gun program. Using standard closed chamber data reduction techniques, burning rates in the range of 10 to 300 m/s over a pressure range of 50 to 300 MPa have been measured. Pressure-time records from the firings of VHBR propellants exhibit severe pressure wave phenomena which are removed by digital filtering prior to transformation to burning rate data. Burning rate data for four VHBR propellants were used in a 1-D traveling charge code set up to simulate VHBR propellant being fired in a closed chamber. Objectives were to check consistency of the data, obtain better estimates of the data, obtain an understanding of the gas dynamic phenomena occurring in the chamber, and assess the validity of simulations produced by the 1-D traveling charge gun code. The procedure used was to match simulated data to experimental pressure-time data and adjust the burning rate data until the two curves matched. It is concluded that consistency of burning rate data in excess of 35 m/s over the pressure range of 50-150 MPa is poor. High amplitude pressure waves in the chamber create severe errors in the derived propellant burning rates.

Book excerpt: Combustion studies were carried out on VHBR propellants in order to determine formulation and fabrication parameters that control the burning characteristics of these compounds. Formulation parameters such as type of fuel, oxidizer, type and percent of binder, oxidizer/binder ration and percent of theoretical maximum density were varied and the effects on combustion were studied using both a closed chamber and an optically transparent bomb. Although numerous facets of the combustion mechanisms remain unclear, the following picture has emerged for the specific formulations studied. The first phase of combustion is a relatively slow porous burning that proceeds down throughout the sample. The original form of the sample remains, although the residue is porous and is filled with hot combustion products. Depending on the composition, percent theoretical density and sample confinement, a transition to a very rapid combustion takes place throughout the entire sample, accompanied by some deconsolidation. For some conditions (composition or confinement) this second phase does not occur. The transition pressure to and the velocity of the second phase varies with the formulation parameters. The details of these results are discussed in the remainder of the paper.

An often used method to determine that burning rate function is to burn a sample of the propellant in a closed container and to register the corresponding pressure-time data. With the aid of formulas from thermodynamic theory these observations can be manipulated to yield the desired parameters of the burning rate function. This analysis is typically done under a number of restrictive assumptions, e.g., the assumption of constant temperature in the container throughout the experiment. In spite of such assumptions the corresponding algorithms published are complicated and an error analysis of the results has apparently never been reported. In the present paper new formulas are derived under relaxed assumptions. With the aid of these formulas the data analysis is reduced to a curve fitting task. For such tasks standard theories and computer programs are available, which furnish the unknown parameters of the burning rate function together with estimates of their variances and co-variances. The new formulas can be replaced by simpler ones under conditions, which are controllable by the design of the experiment. It is found that for such simplifications the temperature's behavior is not relevant. In general the simplifications are permissible if the maximum pressure achieved during the experiment remains essentially smaller than the chemical energy released per unit volume of the propellant. The latter is typically of the order of 10 to 10th power Pa (10 to 5th power). An example illustrates the application of the new algorithm.
