Book Synopsis Daily Life in Medieval Europe by : Jeffrey L. Forgeng
Download or read book Daily Life in Medieval Europe written by Jeffrey L. Forgeng and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-08-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the Middle Ages, a complex and often misunderstood period in European history, through this vivid examination. Details of everyday living recreate the time period for modern readers, conveying the foreignness of the medieval world while bringing it into focus. The volume provides a two-pronged approach to history beginning with a broad sketch of the general dynamics that shaped the medieval experience while at the same time creating a detailed and clear portrait of what life would have been like for real individuals living in specific settings at the time. The reader is introduced to medieval society in the first three chapters, which include information on the life cycle, material culture, and the economy. These chapters provide an understanding of what people ate, what their social lives were like, what they wore, what kinds of jobs they had, and much more. Following are portraits of life in four specific medieval settings, offering in each case a particular example of the type: the village (Cuxham in Oxfordshire), the castle (Dover), the monastery (Cluny) and the town (Paris). Extensive use of documentary sources from each place sketch the broad contours of the social setting and provide details of the everyday experiences of real individuals. The volume concludes with an exploration of how ordinary people perceived the world in which they lived. Original games, recipes, and music are also provided to round out this rich introduction to life in medieval Europe.
Book Synopsis Franciscan Organisation in the Mendicant Context by : Michael J. P. Robson
Download or read book Franciscan Organisation in the Mendicant Context written by Michael J. P. Robson and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2010 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emanating from the tradition of the Italian hermit communities the Franciscans developed organisational structures already early in their history, allowing them to offer pastoral care on a wide scale. This process of transition led firstly to constitutional structures as defined in the order's early legislation but it also occurred within relationship networks at different levels, in the context of Church and papacy, within the different European regions and before the background of the emerging Canon Law. The term "organisation" has been given a wide definition in the articles published in this volume. They offer a survey of general issues related to the structuring and running of religious orders as well as a number of case studies. Comparisons with other mendicant orders offer an analysis of the issues in a wider context.
Book Synopsis Rough Mason, Mason, Freemason, Accepted Mason by : Oscar Patterson
Download or read book Rough Mason, Mason, Freemason, Accepted Mason written by Oscar Patterson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Freemasonry in the United States and Great Britain celebrates its 300th anniversary in 2017 tracing its direct history from the Grand Lodge of England founded in 1717. This text is intended to provide a theory of origin for the Fraternity. It is based on available sources, many of which are not Masonic in nature, but cover the disciplines of history, religion, ethics, economics, politics, and labor development. The book begins with an overview of how the Fraternity initiated members in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, and includes the ancient Legend of Noah. It then reviews how history is written and exams the utilization of Biblical and legendary accounts in the development of a country’s, peoples’, or organization’s history. The text moves on to the transition from craft guild to fraternal organization and gives the full text of Freemasonry’s four oldest documents: Regius Poem, Cooke Manuscript, Graham Manuscript, and Schaw Statutes. This is followed by a description of the London Masons’ Company based on the assumption that this city-wide organization of craftsmen chartered in 1481 may have been the administrative precursor of the Grand Lodge of England. The author then reviews the demise of craft guilds and the rise of fraternal societies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Additional chapters review the Masonic approach to ritual, education, and ethical decision making. The text closes with a discussion of the philosophy of Freemasonry as well as comments and suggestions regarding Freemasonry’s future. The last chapter is a Scottish Charge appropriate to all men, not just Freemasons.

Book Synopsis The Monks of Tiron by : Kathleen Thompson
Download or read book The Monks of Tiron written by Kathleen Thompson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first comprehensive history of the Order of Tiron. As a unique survey of the Tironensian experience it sheds new light on traditional assumptions of twelfth-century monastic history. Previous sketches have been shaped by the life of the founder, the Vita Bernardi, which depicts the forests of western France teeming with holy men, and that self-image of hermit preachers in the wilderness has been deeply influential in the historiography of twelfth-century reform. Drawing from the latest advances in the understanding of hagiography and institutional memory, Thompson reinterprets key sources to offer a valuable contribution to the history of monasticism. She outlines the rapid dissemination of the Tironensian approach in the first thirty years of its existence, its network of contacts with the lay elite and the impact on the Tironensians of the successes of the Cistercians and Mendicants.
Book Synopsis Silver Mining in the Kingdom of Bohemia (13th-14th Centuries) by : Petr Hrubý
Download or read book Silver Mining in the Kingdom of Bohemia (13th-14th Centuries) written by Petr Hrubý and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-05-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 13th century, the monarchs of the Přemyslid dynasty, whose territory overlapped with that of the present-day Czech Republic, were increasingly affected by the dismal state of the Crown's finances. As a result, the Přemyslids initiated intensive silver exploitation, among other means to ensure income. This book's objective, based on interdisciplinary research, is therefore to describe and present the structure of mining and metallurgical areas in the kingdom of Bohemia, as well as to examine and identify how ore mining and metallurgy shaped and interacted with settlement organization and the medieval landscape.
Book Synopsis The Central Convent of Hospitallers and Templars by : Jochen Burgtorf
Download or read book The Central Convent of Hospitallers and Templars written by Jochen Burgtorf and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their humble beginnings in Jerusalem as a late eleventh-century hospital and an early twelfth-century pilgrim escort, Hospitallers and Templars evolved into international military religious orders, engaged in numerous charitable, economic, and military pursuits. At the heart of each of these communities, and in many ways a mirror of their growth and adaptability, was a central convent led by several high officials and headquartered first in Jerusalem (to 1187), then in Acre (1191-1291), and then on Cyprus (since 1291), from where the Hospitallers conquered Rhodes (1306-1310), and where fate in the form of a heresy trial caught up with the Templars. The history, organization, and personnel of these two central convents to 1310 are the subject of this comparative study.
