Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is a primer needed for orthodontic bonding? A Randomised controlled trial Objective: To evaluate the clinical performance of APC Victory IITM (3M Unitek) brackets in direct orthodontic bonding with and without the use of primer. Design: A single operator two centre prospective randomised controlled clinical trial. Setting: The orthodontic departments at the Leeds Dental Institute and St. Luke's hospital, Bradford. Subjects and methods: 92 patients requiring orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. 46 Patients randomly allocated to control (with primer) or test (without primer). Patients bonded using a standardised procedure. Main outcome measures: Number of bracket failures, time to bond-up appliances and the adhesive remnant index (ARI) when bracket failure occurred, over a six month period Results: Failure rate with primer 8.8%, without primer 13.8%, no statistically significant difference- P value 0.051. Mean difference in bondup time per bracket was 0.068 minutes which was not statistically significant (P =0.402). Statistically significant difference in the ARI - ARI 0 with primer 55.9%, no primer 81.5%, (P= 8.1622e-008). Conclusion: There is no statistically significant difference in the bracket failure rate with or without primer when bonding APC Victory IITM (P=0.051). No significant difference in bond-up times. Statistically significant difference in the ARI, bonding without primer providing a lower ARI.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of orthodontic materials in the past 5 decades has been a unique progress curve characterized by periods of intense activity with many developments followed by long quiescent intervals. An example of the delay in adopting the advances in dentistry might well be illustrated by the acid-etching technique, which was introduced in the mid 1950s1 and became universally accepted in the 1960s. It took more than a decade for this practice to become standard procedure in orthodontics on a large scale. Infact, orthodontic bonding has advanced more in last 10 years than previous 25. In the past decade, we have witnessed unprecedented progress in bonding to enamel with various materials techniques and auxiliaries involving glass ionomer bonding, self-etching primers, and new, powerful light-curing sources, along with self-ligating brackets and a different treatment concept, the Invisalign technique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades, adhesive restorative dentistry has increasingly proven its tremendous clinical potential, first in the anterior and more recently in the posterior segments of the mouth. Adhesive techniques have greatly expanded the horizon of aesthetic dentistry. Correction of shapes, positions, dimensions and shades of teeth are now possible with the restorative materials. Repair of fractured teeth can be carried out using the fractured tooth fragments there by maintaining original aesthetics. The continued developments of adhesive materials are now focused on gaining a better understanding of factors affecting adhesion in the oral environment to improve the clinical longevity of restorative materials.

Book Synopsis Efficacy of Orthodontic Bonding Agents in Preventing Demineralization Around Brackets by : Morris Lewis Poole
Download or read book Efficacy of Orthodontic Bonding Agents in Preventing Demineralization Around Brackets written by Morris Lewis Poole and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enamel demineralization is a concern in orthodontic patients with poor oral hygiene. To curtail this problem, amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) containing adhesives have been developed. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the cariostatic potential of an ACP containing orthodontic bonding agent adjacent to brackets. Sixty human molars were randomly distributed into: ACP adhesive, resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC), and conventional composite resin groups (N=20 each). Brackets were bonded following the manufacturer0́9s instructions. Tooth enamel through a 2mm window around the brackets was cycled in demineralization (6 hrs) and remineralization (18 hrs) solutions. After 14 days, teeth embedded in resin and were sectioned. Knoop indentations were performed to determine enamel hardness. There were no statistically significant differences between the control and experimental groups. However, both Fuji Ortho LC (RMGIC), and Aegis Ortho (ACP) showed a trend toward a reduction in demineralization. In addition, it was also shown that the initial acid etching of the enamel significantly reduces enamel hardness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debonding and Fixed Retention in Orthodontics An accessible and thorough guide to debonding and fixed retainer bonding Debonding and Fixed Retention in Orthodontics: An Evidence-Based Clinical Guide reviews the protocols, materials, and techniques required at two key stages of orthodontic treatment. The book has been written as a reference guide and the chapters introduce the best-supported and most efficient approaches to each stage of debonding and fixed retainer bonding treatments, from choice of material through to final results. The book includes relevant procedures including orthodontic appliance removal, appliance debonding, the use of rotating instruments, and enamel cleaning. The authors also provide guidance on topics such as the failure and adverse effects of fixed retainers, enamel structural defects, periodontal effects, and aerosol production, to aid in positive result retention. Readers will also find: Two extensive sections covering debonding and fixed retainer bonding Evidence-based guidelines for each stage of treatment Summaries of the side effects of procedures on hard and soft dental tissues Tips to avoid potential unfavorable sequelae Detailed lists of existing methods and their clinical implications Debonding and Fixed Retention in Orthodontics is written for orthodontic specialists, clinicians, and postgraduate dental students looking to build knowledge and ensure the best results during these two stages of orthodontic therapy.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following conclusions are drawn from this comparative in-vitro study on the shear bond strength and debonding characters of Transbond XT, Esthet-X Flow and Filtek Z-350 using metal brackets Filtek Z-350 has a comparable mean bond strength value (11.07+/-1.03 MPa) like that of Transbond XT (11.58+/-1.3 MPa). Esthet-X Flow has slightly lower mean bond strength value (10.70+/-2.0 MPa) compared Filtek Z-350 and Transbond XT. All the three adhesives exhibited clinically acceptable bond strength. 60-70% of all the three adhesives exhibited cohesive type of bond failure. The efficacy of the flowable composites as a bonding agent needs invivo and clinical assessment through a survival analysis. Filtek Z-350 and Esthet-X flow exhibited problems with handling properties and flowability. Drifting of brackets was noted and pressure was needed for positioning the bracket with Filtek Z-350 and Esthet-X flow. The flow property and viscosity should be balanced to obtain optimal consistency to achieve optimal bond strength and improve handling property for Filtek Z-350 and Esthet-X flow.
