El autor postula coordenadas que nos permiten movernos con libertad para responder al consultante de hoy. Uno de sus mayores aportes es reivindicar el proyecto terapéutico del psicoanálisis como respuesta a los sufrimientos actuales. Su rigor teórico no desemboca en un pragmatismo o en un baluarte defensivo que reconoce en diversos autores huellas que quizá hayan sido discretas en comparación con la intensidad del ruido que provocan los “grandes nombres”. Autores considerados contemporáneos, desfilan a la par de los “clásicos”. En este libro Luis Hornstein expone, con la claridad que brinda el rigor de la teoría, un pensamiento que permitirá enfrentarse a la clínica cotidiana, alejada de cualquier idealización de los autores, y nos ofrece un texto que sirve para pensar, no para obedecer consignas. Este volumen constituye, a final de cuentas, una obra cuyos legatarios legítimos serán aquellos dispuestos a ponerse en duda a sí mismos, a los maestros, a las instituciones, a los conceptos y a las teorías, para hacer de ellos elementos actuales, enriquecidos, que respondan a las demandas de las subjetividades de hoy.

The book starts with a description of the Argentine medical and intellectual establishments reception of psychoanalysis, and the subsequent founding of the Argentine Psychoanalytic Association in 1942. It then broadens to describe the emergence of a "psy culture in the 1960s, tracing its origins to a complex combination of social, economic, political, and cultural factors.
