Projected changes in climate are described under three representative concentration pathways (i.e., low, medium, and high) for the three main drainage basins in Ontario: Hudson Bay, Nelson River (northwestern Ontario), and Great Lakes Basin and the five Great Lakes sub-basins (Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and the Ottawa River). In each basin, projected mean annual, summer, and winter temperatures and total annual, summer, and winter precipitation are shown for three 30-year time periods: 2011-2040 (the 2020s), 2041-2070 (the 2050s), and 2071-2100 (the 2080s). Book excerpt: "Algorithms for projecting ice break-up and freeze-up dates and ice thickness, developed using measurements from a series of Canadian lakes, were applied to project ice conditions across Ontario's inland fishery management zones for the remainder of this century. The duration of the open-water period was estimated as the days between freeze-up and break-up dates. Projections were based on simulations produced with four global climate models (GCMs) under two alternate greenhouse gas emission scenarios (A2 and B1) for three future time periods (2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100). Results indicate the likely magnitude of changes in break-up and freeze-up dates and the duration of open water during the 21st century across Ontario's inland lakes. Projected changes in the timing of ice break-up are typically smaller than those projected for freeze-up. Break-up is mostly a function of lake area as the water is sealed from the atmosphere by a layer of ice. Once the air temperature (31-day running average) exceeds 0 °C in the spring, warmer air temperatures will advance the break-up date, but this is offset by the lower solar elevation at that time in spring, which reduces the contribution of solar radiation to melting. In contrast, freeze-up is related to the volume of water in the lake and occurs as lower air temperatures draw the summer's heat from the water.--publisher.

[...] In addition to increases in seasonal fi re severity indices, a number of these studies also predict increases in the frequency of occurrence of extreme fi re danger in some areas of the country (e.g., Stocks et al. [...] This study uses lightning- and people-caused fi re occurrence models developed specifi cally for Ontario with GCM projections of future climate and Ontario's level of protection analysis software, LEOPARDS (see McAlpine and Hirsch 1999) to estimate the impacts of climate change on the fi re management organization both in terms of numbers of escaped fi res and with respect to changes in operationa [...] The sites of the GCM grid cell centres and OMNR weather stations used are shown in Figure 1. Fire Weather and Fire Danger To create the fi re climate of a future decade, the monthly anomalies were applied to the daily data from the OMNR fi re weather station archive from the years 1992-2001 (corresponding to the period over which lightning records were available). [...] The Fire Behaviour Prediction (FBP) System (Forestry Canada Fire Danger Group 1992) was used in conjunction with the Initial Spread Index (ISI), the Build-up Index (BUI) (calculated on the detection date of the fi re using the FWI System), and the fuel type associated with the fi re to estimate an initial rate of spread for each fi re.

Assertions in the media that there is little scientific evidence for climate change, and that a go-slow or business-as-usual approach is therefore appropriate, are opposed by various points of view that urge speedy reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This special report reviews the key scientific issues regarding climate change, and offers an opinion as to the strength of these arguments, in order to help Ontario policy-makers move to the next stage of the debate. The report focusses on the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and also discusses the findings of the US National Research Council, which carried out an independent critique of the IPCC reports. The first part summarizes evidence of observed changes, such as rising greenhouse gas concentrations, rising global temperatures, retreating glaciers & snow cover, and long-term temperature trends. The second part discusses causes of these changes and the scientific debates about these causes. The final part reviews projections of future climate change. A technical appendix provides further details on the matters covered in each of the three parts.

Projected increases in temperature and changes to the type and amount of precipitation may affect ecosystems and how people interact with, and benefit from, ecosystem values and resources. We report projected changes to season length for snowmobiling and ice fishing and expected changes to revenues of float plane-accessible tourism establishments based on changes in walleye (Sander vitreum) productivity and smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) presence in lakes as social indicators of vulnerability to climate change. These projections are derived from an ensemble and the CGCM3 model for two common climate change scenarios for the short- (year 2040), mid- (year 2070), and long- (year 2100) term. Winter recreation (snowmobiling and ice fishing) is projected to be moderately affected by climate change in the short and mid-term. The longer-term implications of climate change may be more pronounced. Under the more extreme climate change scenario, by 2100 both the snowmobile and ice fishing seasons may be as much as one month shorter."--publisher.
