Book Synopsis Climate Change in Cyprus by : Theodoros Zachariadis
Download or read book Climate Change in Cyprus written by Theodoros Zachariadis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-25 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise overview of facts and projections about climate change in Cyprus and its region until the end of the 21st century. Climate change is expected to have adverse effects in Mediterranean Europe – the most serious compared to other European regions. Being an island state with a semi-arid climate in the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus is located in a hot spot. Based on the information available in the literature, it highlights the expected natural, economic and societal impacts of climate change and presents recommendations for the implementation of a national adaptation strategy. Despite the dismal outlook arising from this review, the book demonstrates that coping with climate change is possible, provided that proactive actions are taken by both the public and the private sector. Public authorities need to set clear priorities and set up adequate monitoring mechanisms that can help avoid large natural and economic damages at a later stage. Enabling private adaptation investments and properly pricing the use of natural resources are key priorities for investing in a climate resilient economy.

Book Synopsis CLIMATE CHANGE - A CHALLENGE FOR EUROPE AND CYPRUS by : Engin Karatas
Download or read book CLIMATE CHANGE - A CHALLENGE FOR EUROPE AND CYPRUS written by Engin Karatas and published by Tredition Gmbh. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the beginning of the 21st century climate change has become a central challenge of global policy making and in terms of sustainable development. Unless it can be stopped in time, there will be incalculable consequences for the economic and social development of a globalized society. The member states of the European Union and the EU itself has to come forward in the vanguard of climate policy. Climate protection requires not only the use of renewable energy sources, energy saving and improvement of energy efficiency, but also mitigation of adverse impacts through nature conservation and preservation of biodiversity, better water management, CO2 sinks, as well as an improved environmental education. This book confronts the most urgent questions facing us now from a general and also from a Cyprus' specific point of view: The outstanding tableau of authors from Europe and Cyprus brings the right expertise to have an insight view into the challenges the island's nature is already facing in the context of climate change. This book is the result of the second "Conference on Sustainability" of the German-Cypriot Forum in Cooperation with Friends of Nature Cyprus, which took place in November 2009 in Nicosia. One of the biggest problems of Cyprus is water scarcity. The island has a semi-arid climate and limited water resources which depend mainly on rainfall. However, rainfall in Cyprus is unevenly distributed with considerable regional variations, water resources are scarce and expensive to exploit and droughts occur frequently. In this book you find proposals for improving water management in Cyprus. Another chapter is the look at renewable energies. Cyprus as a sun island is very suitable for solar energy. The so-called bio-energy is the most problematic of all renewable energies. Not only because of severe competition for limited space and water resources for nature conservation and food production. To be economically feasible bio-energy is normally grown in huge mon

Download or read book Climate Change written by Jason Smerdon and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-25 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate Change is geared toward a variety of students and general readers who seek the real science behind global warming. Exquisitely illustrated, the text introduces the basic science underlying both the natural progress of climate change and the effect of human activity on the deteriorating health of our planet. Noted expert and author Edmond A. Mathez synthesizes the work of leading scholars in climatology and related fields, and he concludes with an extensive chapter on energy production, anchoring this volume in economic and technological realities and suggesting ways to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Climate Change opens with the climate system fundamentals: the workings of the atmosphere and ocean, their chemical interactions via the carbon cycle, and the scientific framework for understanding climate change. Mathez then brings the climate of the past to bear on our present predicament, highlighting the importance of paleoclimatology in understanding the current climate system. Subsequent chapters explore the changes already occurring around us and their implications for the future. In a special feature, Jason E. Smerdon, associate research scientist at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, provides an innovative appendix for students.
Book Synopsis Climate Change Adaptation by : Lisa Dale
Download or read book Climate Change Adaptation written by Lisa Dale and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change policy has typically emphasized mitigation, calling for reducing emissions and shifting away from fossil fuels. Yet while these efforts have floundered, floods, wildfires, droughts, and other disasters are becoming more frequent and potent. As the risks escalate, we must ask how to adapt to a changing climate. How might farmers modify their practices to maximize food security? Can coastal cities protect their infrastructure from rising seas? Are there strategic ways for developing countries to combine climate resilience with economic growth and poverty reduction? For people and societies around the world, these questions are not theoretical: adaptation is already underway. This book offers a concise overview of climate adaptation governance. In clear, accessible language, Lisa Dale describes key strategies that governments, communities, and the private sector are now deploying. She presents the theory and practice that underlie climate adaptation efforts at local and global scales, providing illuminating case studies that foreground the problems facing developing countries. Dale analyzes the effectiveness of a range of policy interventions, drawing out principles of good governance and discussing how practitioners can navigate complex tradeoffs. She emphasizes equity and inclusion, considering how climate adaptation policy can account for the needs of historically disadvantaged groups. Written for a wide audience, this book is an invaluable introduction for all readers interested in how societies can meet the challenges of an altered climate.

Book Synopsis Climate Change and the Law by : Erkki J. Hollo
Download or read book Climate Change and the Law written by Erkki J. Hollo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate Change and the Law is the first scholarly effort to systematically address doctrinal issues related to climate law as an emergent legal discipline. It assembles some of the most recognized experts in the field to identify relevant trends and common themes from a variety of geographic and professional perspectives. In a remarkably short time span, climate change has become deeply embedded in important areas of the law. As a global challenge calling for collective action, climate change has elicited substantial rulemaking at the international plane, percolating through the broader legal system to the regional, national and local levels. More than other areas of law, the normative and practical framework dedicated to climate change has embraced new instruments and softened traditional boundaries between formal and informal, public and private, substantive and procedural; so ubiquitous is the reach of relevant rules nowadays that scholars routinely devote attention to the intersection of climate change and more established fields of legal study, such as international trade law. Climate Change and the Law explores the rich diversity of international, regional, national, sub-national and transnational legal responses to climate change. Is climate law emerging as a new legal discipline? If so, what shared objectives and concepts define it? How does climate law relate to other areas of law? Such questions lie at the heart of this new book, whose thirty chapters cover doctrinal questions as well as a range of thematic and regional case studies. As Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), states in her preface, these chapters collectively provide a “review of the emergence of a new discipline, its core principles and legal techniques, and its relationship and potential interaction with other disciplines.”
