Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global security environment in the last five years has been characterised by a state of ‘no war, no peace’ among major powers, resulting in a state of uncertainty about their national security objectives. For instance, the US has been concerned about the attitudes of Iran, Russia, North Korea, China, and others, and yet did not expect a direct military conflict with them. On the other hand, China has expanded its naval strategy from a mere ‘off-shore defence’ to ‘open seas protection’ and has called for both ‘defence and offence’ instead of merely ‘territorial air defence’, thereby indicating preparedness for the possibility of a military confrontation. The major powers have been thus groping for suitable responses to their threat perceptions. It is in this kind of a complex and confusing international environment that India, as a rising power, has been called upon to wade through its strategic partnerships with major powers and nurture friendships with various Asian and African countries. This sixteenth volume of India’s National Security Annual Review offers indispensable information and evaluation on matters pertaining to national security. It undertakes a thorough analysis of the trends to provide a backdrop to India’s engagement with various countries. The volume also discusses persisting threats from China and Pakistan. With contributions from experts from the fields of diplomacy, academia, and civil and military services, the book will be one of the most dependable sources of analyses for scholars of international relations, foreign policy, defence and strategic studies, and political science, and practitioners alike.

Book excerpt: IAF from its humble beginning in 1932 has transformed itself into fourth largest AF operating at frontiers of technologies with multi-dimensional capabilities and a potent force to reckon with. It is said that the history is written by winners. But what is important is that the history is documented impartially, objectively and factually, as much as possible. It may be worth for IAF to consider coming out with a book each on Operations, Maintenance and Administration, depicting the historical decisions taken - successes and failures in equal measure - and how the IAF progressed over the decades to be what it is today - a professionally managed, optimally exploited, synergistically working and one of the most effective instruments of national power to ensure accomplishing objectives of the nation. Yes, coffee table books and anniversary issues do gloss over a few events, but the real history is made by the toil, blood and sweat and tears of the men behind these operations. Individual awards and citations many times compromise on actualities and are miserly with truth. “History is an argument without an end” said Pieter Geyl the Dutch historian. “I am glad to recommend this book to all, as the readers of the book, irrespective of their background, will enjoy the journey of these ‘spanners and screwdrivers’ of 12 AEC covering almost 900 man-years of IAF maintenance. It is also bound to raise curiosity in many minds to know more about air force maintenance. The book may act as a lighthouse for a lot of the present serving aeronautical engineers in their progression.” – Air Marshal KS Bhatia, PVSM AVSM & BAR “40 years of IAF maintenance history told through the voices of 39 outstanding air force officers with an unsurpassed breadth of experience and accomplishments. Most inspiring.” – Ramesh Dontha, Author of The 60-Minute Startup series of books, 3 times bestselling author, Gold Medal Award winner in 2020 Reader’s Favorite International Competition (Marketing)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been decades since many business schools outside India adopted the case study methodology for teaching almost all branches of management studies. This trend has been seen in India, too, where top management institutes have implemented the case study-based methodology as an important pedagogical tool in business education. The major issue in India, however, is a severe shortage of Indian case studies through which business schools can provide industry insights to students. This volume fills that gap. It has twenty Indian cases related to different aspects of business management. The cases cover some of the prominent disciplines of management like marketing, finance, human resource management, strategy management, operations management, accounting, and mergers and acquisitions. These cases best serve the purpose of adoption of 'case methodology' in classroom teaching or online lecture sessions for the faculty and students of business management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an analytical account of the entire operational history of the IAF. Within five years of its creation the fledgling Flights of No 1 Squadron were undergoing trials by fire in the NWFP. During the World War II, the IAF expanded nine-fold and made valiant contributions in turning the tide of Japanese onslaught. Hardly had the guns fallen silent across the globe and India emerged independent breaking the centuries old yoke of colonialism, once again the IAF was called into operations in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) war in 1947-48. The IAF was at its innovative best in the un-chartered virgin territory of Himalayan heights. From 1948 till 1962, the IAF witnessed slow and lopsided growth. The debacle in 1962 Sino-Indian war and refusal to use the combat component of the IAF was the nadir of Indian integrated decision-making. The realisation of the need for having well-structured defence forces and resultant expansion of defence forces including the IAF had begun. This reorganisation measure was disrupted half way by the Pakistani attack in J&K. The 1965 war was on. The IAF was launched into conflict at an extremely short notice of one hour and stemmed the advancing enemy tanks from severing the lifeline of J&K. It was only the 1971 war, which enabled the IAF to prepare itself properly and prosecute a well-crafted war plan. The exceptionally swift victory in East Pakistan in a matter of 12 days and with 93,000 Pakistani troops surrendering revealed the might of the Indian Armed Forces. The IAF contributed a lion’s share. Its precision attacks on Governor’s house had strategic results. Pakistani intrusions in 1999 in Dras, Kargil and Haneef sectors again saw restricted committal of the IAF along with the Army. Despite restrictive rules of engagement IAF operated with innovations and was the major reason for Pakistan to vacate the intrusion. In its history of 80 years the IAF has also operated in counter-insurgency role on many occasions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrated as a theatre of geo-economic connectivity typified by the ‘Act East’ policy, India’s near east is key not only to its great-power rivalry with China, which first boiled over in the 1962 war, but to the idea(s) of India itself. It is also one of the most intricately partitioned lands anywhere on Earth. Rent by communal and class violence, the region has birthed extreme forms of religious and ethnic nationalisms and communist movements. The Indian state’s survival instinct and pursuit of regional hegemony have only accentuated such extremes. This book scripts a new history of India’s eastward-looking diplomacy and statecraft. Narrated against the backdrop of separatist resistance within India’s own northeastern states, as well as rivalry with Beijing and Islamabad in Myanmar and Bangladesh, it offers a simple but compelling argument. The aspirations of ‘Act East’ mask an uncomfortable truth: India privileges political stability over economic opportunity in this region. In his chronicle of a state’s struggle to overcome war, displacement and interventionism, Avinash Paliwal lays bare the limits of independent India’s influence in its near east.
