Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cleaning and Re-Indoctrinating Nigeria to the Root is a mirror of the nation where all Nigerians can see their images. It imagines Nigeria as a large portion of farmland owned by a group of families frustrated by their incapacity to plant and harvest abundantly from their travails for so many years. Most seeds/crops die before they are harvested, and few that survive are carted away by wild animals and pests. Eventually, some farmland owners, their dependents, and those who are trained to manage farms but are kept outside the project are beginning to come together to imagine options available for them as follows: (a) coming together of all trained members of the family where they adopt a motion of change of attitude (behavioral pattern) and sealed oath of sincerity on all future proceedings; (b) selection of all future seed/crops to be planted in the farmland; (c) screening out of all bad leaders and workers in the farm, (d) disinfecting the barren land from pesticides, screening out gravels and concrete sands, and then irrigating and fertilizing the land; (e) securing the farmland from wild animals by erecting a fence and employing new security guards; (f ) taking decisions on how crops will be harvested and what to do with the gains in areas of priorities, including distribution among the whole group of families.

Book excerpt: National Book Award Finalist: “This man’s ideas may be the most influential, not to say controversial, of the second half of the twentieth century.”—Columbus Dispatch At the heart of this classic, seminal book is Julian Jaynes's still-controversial thesis that human consciousness did not begin far back in animal evolution but instead is a learned process that came about only three thousand years ago and is still developing. The implications of this revolutionary scientific paradigm extend into virtually every aspect of our psychology, our history and culture, our religion—and indeed our future. “Don’t be put off by the academic title of Julian Jaynes’s The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. Its prose is always lucid and often lyrical…he unfolds his case with the utmost intellectual rigor.”—The New York Times “When Julian Jaynes . . . speculates that until late in the twentieth millennium BC men had no consciousness but were automatically obeying the voices of the gods, we are astounded but compelled to follow this remarkable thesis.”—John Updike, The New Yorker “He is as startling as Freud was in The Interpretation of Dreams, and Jaynes is equally as adept at forcing a new view of known human behavior.”—American Journal of Psychiatry

Book excerpt: 'Sparklingly funny' Wired Magazine '[Nwaubani] not merely explores a side of modern existence that touches millions every day, but does so with wit, warmth and insight' Independent 'Beautifully written' Sunday Herald Kingsley is fresh out of university, eager to find an engineering job so he can support his family and marry the girl of his dreams. Being the opara of the family, he is entitled to certain privileges - a piece of meat in his egusi soup, a party to celebrate his graduation. But times are hard in Nigeria and jobs are not easy to come by. For much of his young life, Kingsley believed that education was everything, that through wisdom, all things were possible. But when a tragedy befalls his family, Kingsley learns the hardest lesson of all: education may be the language of success in his country, but it is money that does the talking. In desperation he turns to his uncle, Boniface-aka Cash Daddy-an exuberant character who suffers from elephantiasis of the pocket. He is also rumoured to run a successful empire of email scams. But he can help. With Cash Daddy's intervention, Kingsley and his family can be as safe as a tortoise under its shell. It is up to Kingsley now, to reconcile his passion for knowledge with his hunger for money, to fully assume his role of first son. But can he do it without being drawn into this outlandish milieu?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book is the first volume in a projected cultural history of the United States, from the earliest English settlements to our own time. It is a history of American folkways as they have changed through time, and it argues a thesis about the importance for the United States of having been British in its cultural origins. While most people in the United States today have no British ancestors, they have assimilated regional cultures which were created by British colonists, even while preserving ethnic identities at the same time. In this sense, nearly all Americans are "Albion's Seed," no matter what their ethnicity may be. The concluding section of this remarkable book explores the ways that regional cultures have continued to dominate national politics from 1789 to 1988, and still help to shape attitudes toward education, government, gender, and violence, on which differences between American regions are greater than between European nations.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2021 in the subject Organisation and administration - Public administration, grade: 68, , language: English, abstract: Multinational Corporations (MNCs) have overtime been involved in community development process of their host communities. How CSR and its attendant MoU which the oil MNCs entered into with the host communities should be defined and implemented has been a contentious debate among scholars and development practitioners. In Niger Delta region of Nigeria, the failure of the government to meet the development needs of the communities has made them to depend largely on the oil MNCs to fill the development gap. Total E and P Nigeria Ltd is one of the major Oil MNCs in the Niger Delta with major operations in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States. The company is said to have entered into MoU with its host communities. The question is, how has the company contributed to the development of these communities through its CSR/MOU policies? Consequently, this study was guided by four research questions and four null hypotheses. The study is anchored on two CSR theories: the theory of participatory development and the Stakeholders Theory by Freeman. The research design adopted was mixed methods research which entails quantitative and qualitative methods involving survey and archival as well as utilizing Questionnaire, In-depth-Interview, Focus Group Discussion (FDG) and Observation were used as instruments for data collection. The study revealed that there is no variation in the strategies of Total E and P Ltd in community development in its host communities in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States; that the company adopts the strategy of entering MoU with the host communities, mobilization of local resources such as the use of local skills and contractors, that the rate of the involvement of the local people in the CD process is low, that the company has been able to fill the infrastructural gap in the host communities through the provision of electricity, health care, educational facilities and scholarships, and supply of portable water.

Book excerpt: "In a world of rising tensions between Russia and the United States, the Middle East and Europe, Sunnis and Shiites, Islamism and liberalism, Turkey is at the epicentre. And at the heart of Turkey is its right-wing populist president, Recep Tayyip Erdo?an. Since 2002, Erdo?an has consolidated his hold on domestic politics while using military and diplomatic means to solidify Turkey as a regional power. His crackdown has been brutal and consistent - scores of journalists arrested, academics officially banned from leaving the country, university deans fired and many of the highest-ranking military officers arrested. In some senses, the nefarious and failed 2016 coup has given Erdo?an the licence to make good on his repeated promise to bring order and stability under a 'strongman'. Here, leading Turkish expert Soner Cagaptay will look at Erdo?an's roots in Turkish history, what he believes in and how he has cemented his rule, as well as what this means for the world. The book will also unpick the 'threats' Erdogan has worked to combat - from the liberal Turks to the Gulen movement, from coup plotters to Kurdish nationalists - all of which have culminated in the crisis of modern Turkey."--Bloomsbury Publishing.
