Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clays and Clay Products This volume, like the others in this series, does not aim at exhausting the subject with which it deals. On the contrary, its chief aim is to give the commercial man sufficient insight into the nature of the various materials and products described for him to realise, in broad outline, the processes involved in their treatment and the extent to which they may be used for the purposes of his own business. Few people, except those who are actually engaged in the manufacture of clay products, have any idea of the wide ramifications of the industries connected therewith, yet, if clay products were suddenly removed and became irreplaceable, the loss among both primitive and civilised peoples would be incredibly great. Vast and important as is the Iron and Steel industry, it is in many ways only secondary to the trades connected with clays and clay-products;indeed, without the latter, the very production of iron would become practically impossible, architecture would, in many districts, be stifled, and the most evident signs of civilisation would be absent. To know something of the industries connected with so important a subject should form part of the education of every commercial and business man, and it is for such that this volume has primarily been written. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Clay Oth as raw materials and in the form of pottery, bricks, tiles, terra-cotta and many other articles of use and ornament, clays are amongst the most important rock products. Yet the origin of the substances we know as clay, ' the processes occurring in its formation and the causes of some of the most important of its characteristics are of such a nature that it is remarkable that its use should have become so extended in the arts and sciences, while we know so little of its properties when in a pure state. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building Stones and Clays: Their Origin, Characters and Examination The present volume may in some sense be considered as an outgrowth of the author's previous work on cementing materials, for it deals with natural materials which are closely related, either as constituents or as competitors, to the manufactured products therein discussed. It may be noted that little space has been devoted to a de scription of the local distribution of building stones and clays. The inclusion of such data, relative to products which are nat urally so common and so widely distributed, tends to convert a general treatise into a mere directory of the quarry and clay product industries. The extensive reference lists which are pre sented, however, will serve to point out where information re garding the stone or clays of any particular state may be found. Attention should also be directed to the chapters relative to the examination and valuation of clay and stone properties. So far as known to the writer, most of the material therein pre sented has not been touched upon in earlier works on these subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Low-Cost Glazes for Structural Clay Products When color is not of primary importance, costs may be reduced by use of local clays in place of the more expensive materials. Most clays used in the products to be glazed contain the proper ratios of silica to alumina for glaze-making purposes, and good glazes can be made from them by adding suitable fluxes to control fusibility. Then used in this manner, such clays can displace all of the White-burning clay and the feldspar and most of the potter's flint. 'tis said there are no two clays alike. Each clay has properties peculiar to itself, hence to insure the best results in product and economy in manufac ture, each clay must be studied carefully and treated in a manner best adapted to develop the highest grade of ware, whether it be brick, tile or pottery, at the lowest cost. With a view of aiding clayworkers to solve some of the many dim cult problems incident to the variation in clays, Prof. A. V. Bleininger some years ago prepared a treatise on this sub ject for the clay-worker, which was published in serial form. The subject is of such prime importance that the matter has been revised by the author and is now pre sented in book form for library and reference purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clays of the State of Washington: Their Geology, Mineralogy, and Technology Work on the clays of Washington was begun in the sum mer of 1901 while working on the Washington Geological Survey, small part of the field season that year being de voted to this work. Some of the most important clay deposits and clay-working plants were visited and samples of the clays procured and sent to the State College for study. On account of other work, nothing further, however, was done until the sum mer of 1903, when, on account of the Washington Geological Survey having been discontinued, the State College took up the work and has furnished the means for completing it. Field work has been carried on during a part of each of the summers of 1903, 1904s, 1905, and 1906; the different localities where the clays are being utilized having been visited, samples of the clays procured, and the deposits studied. Samples have been obtained also from many deposits which up to the present time have not been utilized. For various reasons, however, it has not been possible to visit some localities where clays that are suited to the manufacture of certain kinds of clay products may occur. In some cases samples have been procured from these localities by giving the party interested in the deposit directions in regard to sampling and having samples taken by him and sent to the College. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clays and Shales of Minnesota This bulletin gives the results of an investigation of the clay resources of Minnesota made during 1912 and 1913. In general the Object of the work has been to assist in the development of the clay resources of the State. The broader problems of Ceramics are treated only incidentally, but some of the important scientific conclusions Of the American Ceramic Society, of the Bureau of Standards, and Of surveys of other States are briefly reviewed in order that they may be more readily available to those whose chief interests are technical and commercial. A more extended treatment of the scientific results Of the investigation will be published later. Specifically, the Object has been to investigate the brick supply for every town of or more inhabitants and for every county in the State, to ascertain the extent of several deposits now developed at only a few points, to find new deposits, and to determine the qualities Of these deposits and of certain mixtures so as to ascertain whether it is possible to produce refractory wares, pottery, paving brick, and other high-grade products. Pressed brick are so called because after molding the brick are pressed to give sharp edges, and smooth surfaces. En amel brick. Have a coating of opaque material. Glazed brick are coated With a transparent glaze. Common brick are made of easily-molded clays that burn hard at a low temperature and do not often warp or crack. Brick clays generally burn red. Pressed, enameled and glazed brick need a better quality of clay. It must burn to a uniform color, it must not warp or split and it must become hard at a moderate heat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Current Developments in Clay and Clay Products: Extract of the Contributions of the Fifth Annual Illinois Mineral Industries Conference One of the important pieces of work being done in European laboratories is the mineralogical analysis of all types of clays with these new techniques. Here In Illinois we are carrying on similar work In our attempt to catalog completely the kinds of clays we have in the State and the types of clay which may be used in various industries and which are not now produced in Illinois. The exact procedure used in making these mineral analyses is not the same in all laboratories. In Germany it is generally felt that X-ray analyses alone are sufficient to determine the mineral composition of clays. Here we are of the opinion that a satisfactory determination of the mineral composition of clays and Shales can only be gained by X - ray, optical and chemical analyses.
