Book excerpt: Chronicling the life of Jack Greenstreet through the Civil Wars to the Glorious Reformation, Claxfeldestane takes inspiration from factual evidence gained by the author’s research into his own Kentish ancestry, traced back to 1250AD. Knights and nobles were discovered bearing the Greenstreet name, and a Coat of Arms borne by Lawrence Greenstreet, son of John, the Prior of Rochester Cathedral. Mentioned in ancient subsidy rolls, ‘Claxfeldestane’ is a 15th century, half timbered, Wealden Hall farmhouse. Part jettied, the house was built by wealthy Yeoman farmers and lies at Claxfield, on the Lynsted side of Teynham, Kent. It is at this Grade 2 listed abode that the tale centres, where the author’s ancestors resided and were recorded through history as *King’s Reeves: (*viz - Chief Magistrates. Stewards who organise manorial affairs.) A Royalist, supporting King Charles 1st, Cavalier Jack feuds with his father and brothers, who support the Parliamentary cause. He also crosses sword with his uncle, Lord Peter of Paynter’s farm, Ospringe, who is in league with Oliver Cromwell. Seriously wounded at the Battle of Yalding, Jack is attended to by his uncle, Reeve Johis, and the Reeve’s son James. Johis and James Greenstreet are destined to be the last Reeves of Claxfeldestane.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Awakening Aten envelops the reader in an Egypt of whispers and fears, of webs within webs, deceit upon deceit. Its themes of murder, intrigue, political and religious conflict, corruption, tomb robbing, war and executions are set against a background of fundamental ideological change. Ancient Egypt is seen through the eyes of two families; one royal, the other commoner. Yuya, whose tomb is in the Valley of the Kings, is a foreigner who rises from slavery to become Regent to an infant Pharaoh and thus, the most powerful man in the world’s wealthiest empire. His children and descendants will remain at the very heart of the country’s destiny. Kha is a tomb painter and builder who experiences both the despair of imprisonment and the horror of war. As Overseer of the King’s Works he restores the Great Sphinx, and inscribes the ‘Dream Stela’ placed between its paws, still visible today. Through tragic and deathly events his family and that of Yuya become entwined. This is the fictional tale of real people, whose possessions and artefacts can be seen in museums throughout the world. It gives a voice to those people, inspired by their personal items, buried with them 3,000 years ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1926, having cared for her sick mother on her own for some years, 16 year old Mary gives birth to a baby boy in the Workhouse. Abandoned by her mother, unsupported by the child’s father, and behaving in ways the Workhouse finds difficult to manage, her baby is taken from her and she is sent to the local mental hospital (previously the lunatic asylum). Here, with the help of other inmates, and encouraged by an ambitious young woman seeking her vocation as a nurse, she begins a long process of discovery and development, learning to read and write, and then to cook and cater for the staff and patients in the institution that becomes her home. Set against a backdrop of changes in attitude to, and treatments for, mental illness, and reflecting developments in post war societal structures, particularly those involving immigration from the Empire, Mary’s story spans over 50 years, as, discharged from the hospital, she continues to strive to find her identity, to understand where she belongs, and ultimately to find her baby. While the influence of the Great War on the lives of those who survived it echoes over the lives of the generations that follow, Mary yearns for a caring and tolerant community to support the family she finally creates for herself.
