Book excerpt: The Nile Expedition of 1860–1863 was one of the most important exploratory expeditions made in the nineteenth century. The long-debated question of the location of the source of the Nile was answered (despite continuing arguments) and the venture had important historical consequences. Earlier accounts of the expedition have assumed James Augustus Grant to have been no more than the loyal second-in-command to John Hanning Speke, the leader. This new edition of Grant’s 1864 book, A Walk across Africa, provides the opportunity to re-examine his role. The original text has been fully annotated with explanatory notes and also supplemented by extracts from the very remarkable detailed day-to-day journal which Grant kept. Even more unusually, this edition includes reproductions of the whole visual record which he made consisting of 147 watercolours and sketches. This was the first ever visual record of large parts of East Africa and the Upper Nile Valley region. These documentary and illustrative materials have been drawn from the extensive collection of Grant’s papers now in the care of the National Library of Scotland. The Library has co-operated in the preparation of this volume to make possible its special features. Grant emerges as a much more impressive and important figure than has previously been recognised. He was a trained scientist and his narrative is a well-organised perspective on the expedition and its activities. His own growing understanding of Africa and of Africans becomes apparent and helps to explain his later activities. The editor provides a context to the expedition and its results and this includes a new approach to the understanding of the Nile source problem by exposing the credulity of the way many previous commentators have used Ptolemy’s information and also by suggesting that the problem should be approached in the light of geological and geomorphological as well as historical information. The Introduction in addition discusses Grant’s work in the light of the development of the academic understanding of the history of Africa and of European involvement in the region.

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002. When did Africa emerge as a continent in the European mind? This book aims to trace the origins of the idea of Africa and its evolution in Renaissance thought. Particular attention is given to the relationship between the process of acquiring knowledge through travel and exploration, and its representation within a discourse which also includes previously acquired cosmographical elements. Among the themes investigated are: How did the image of Africa evolve from the conception of a symbolic space to a Euclidean representation? How did the Renaissance rediscovery of Antiquity interact with the Portuguese discoveries along the African coast? And once Africa was circumnavigated, how was the inner landmass depicted in the absence of first-hand knowledge? Also, overall, in this whole process what was the interplay of myth and reality?

Book excerpt: West Asia is in the throes of acute political turbulence today. Given West Asia's energy resources, developments in the region have profound implications for the wider world. The international community has been deeply concerned with the fragile conditions of the region in recent years. This book tries to analyse the evolving security environment in West Asia and its implication for global security. This edited volume discusses critical issues of our times: religious extremism, democratisation, WMD proliferation, international terrorism, external intervention in the region, and energy security. The articles in the book analyse these issues critically and suggest possible alternatives for securing peace and prosperity in West Asia. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: The twenty-seventh volume of Geographers: Biobibliographical Studies includes essays covering the geographical work and lasting significance of eight individuals between the late sixteenth century and the early twentieth century. The essays cover early modern geography, cartography and astronomy, geography's connections with late Renaissance humanism and religious politics, 'armchair geography' and textual enquiry in African geography, medical mapping and Siberian travel, human ecology in the Vidalian tradition, radical political geography in twentieth-century USA, American agricultural geography and cultural-historical geography in Japan and in India. In these essays, GBS continues to provide detailed insight into the richness of geography's intellectual traditions and the diversity of geographers' lives.
