Book excerpt: This manuscript is devoted to classifying the isomorphism classes of the virtually cyclic subgroups of the braid groups of the 2-sphere. As well as enabling us to understand better the global structure of these groups, it marks an important step in the computation of the K-theory of their group rings. The classification itself is somewhat intricate, due to the rich structure of the finite subgroups of these braid groups, and is achieved by an in-depth analysis of their group-theoretical and topological properties, such as their centralisers, normalisers and cohomological periodicity. Another important aspect of our work is the close relationship of the braid groups with mapping class groups. This manuscript will serve as a reference for the study of braid groups of low-genus surfaces, and isaddressed to graduate students and researchers in low-dimensional, geometric and algebraic topology and in algebra.

Since the last edition published in 2007, there have been dramatic changes in cataloging systems from the Library of Congress. The most notable being the shift from AACR2 to Resource Description and Access (RDA) as the new standard developed by the Library of Congress. With the help of the coauthor, Athena Salaba, this text is modified throughout to conform to the new standard. Retaining the overall outline of the previous edition, this text presents the essence of library cataloging and classification in terms of three basic functions: descriptive cataloging, subject access, and classification. Within this framework, all chapters have been rewritten to incorporate the changes that have occurred during the interval between the third and fourth editions. In each part, the historical development and underlying principles of the retrieval mechanism at issue are treated first, because these are considered essential to an understanding of cataloging and classification. Divided into five parts—a general overview; record production and structure, encoding formats, and metadata records; RDA; subject access and controlled vocabularies; and the organization of library resources—each part of the book begins with a list of the standards and tools used in the preparation and processing of that part of the cataloging record covered, followed by suggested background readings selected to help the reader gain an overview of the subject to be presented. This book is the standard text for the teaching and understanding of cataloging and classification.

Computer systems can easily handle mathematical models even when they are complicated and nonlinear (e.g., neural networks). On the other hand, it is not always easy for human users to intuitively understand mathe matical models even when they are simple and linear. This is because human information processing is based mainly on linguistic knowledge while com puter systems are designed to handle symbolic and numerical information. A large part of our daily communication is based on words. We learn from various media such as books, newspapers, magazines, TV, and the Inter net through words. We also communicate with others through words. While words play a central role in human information processing, linguistic models are not often used in the fields of classification and modeling. If there is no goal other than the maximization of accuracy in classification and model ing, mathematical models may always be preferred to linguistic models. On the other hand, linguistic models may be chosen if emphasis is placed on interpretability.

In the monograph, a classification of countable models of complete theories with respect to two basic characteristics (Rudin–Keisler preorders and distribution functions for numbers of limit models) is presented and applied to the most important classes of countable theories such as the class of Ehrenfeucht theories (i. e., complete first-order theories with finitely many but more than one pairwise non-isomorphic countable models), the class of small theories (i. e., complete first-order theories with countably many types), and the class of countable first-order theories with continuum many types. For realizations of basic characteristics of countable complete theories, syntactic generic constructions, generalizing the Jonsson–Fraïssé construction and the Hrushovski construction, are presented. Using these constructions a solution of the Goncharov–Millar problem (on the existence of Ehrenfeucht theories with countable models which are not almost homogeneous) is described. Modifying the Hrushovski–Herwig generic construction, a solution of the Lachlan problem on the existence of stable Ehrenfeucht theories is shown. In the first part, a characterization of Ehrenfeuchtness, properties of Ehrenfeucht theories, generic constructions, and algebras for distributions of binary semi-isolating formulas of a complete theory are considered.The book is intended for specialists interested in Mathematical Logic.
