Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sanskrit Grammar: Including Both the Classical Language, and the Older Dialects, of Veda and Brahmana Of the deficiencies of my work I am, I think, not less fully aware than any critic of it, even the severest, is likely to be. Should it be found to answer its intended purpose well enough to come to another edition, my endeavor will be to improve and complete it; and I shall be grateful for any corrections or suggestions which may aid me in mak ing it a more efficient help to the study of the Sanskrit language and literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sanskrit Reader: With Vocabulary and Notes So cumbrous or so meagre have been hitherto the appliances for acquiring even a moderate knowledge of Sanskrit, that classical students, when seeking such knowledge as an auxiliary to their special work, have found the labor discouragingly great. These students unquestionably have a legitimate and sufficient reason for undertaking Sanskrit, and I venture to hope that the difficulties of the beginning (see p. Xv) have been so materially lessened that they will now find even a modicum of Sanskrit well worth the trouble of attainment. Book Synopsis A Sanskrit Grammar for Beginners (Classic Reprint) by : Friedrich Max Muller
Download or read book A Sanskrit Grammar for Beginners (Classic Reprint) written by Friedrich Max Muller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sanskrit Grammar for Beginners The experience of some years' teaching has convinced me that Sanskrit, compared with other dead languages, is not difficult to learn. The fact that the ordinary Sanskrit verb has no subjunctive, only one imperative, one infinitive, and two optatives, altogether only thirteen moods and tenses in each voice, while Greek has upwards of thirty, would alone go far to prove the comparative simplicity of Sanskrit Acci dence. Again, the absence in Sanskrit of the indirect construction, which constitutes a conspicuous difficulty of Syntax in the classical languages, is in itself a tolerably clear proof that the structure of complex sentences in Sanskrit must be far less involved than in Latin or Greek. On the other hand, though it must be admitted that the phonetic laws of Sanskrit present greater difficulties than in other languages, most of these difficulties will disappear when it is pointed out that the rules of Sandhi rest on two leading principles, the avoidance of hiatus in the case of vowels and assimilation in the case of consonants. I feel sure that the exaggerated idea of the difficulties of Sanskrit commonly entertained is due to the fact that the amount of matter contained in the Sanskrit grammars hitherto published in England and America is far too exhaustive for elementary purposes. Beginners are not aware that a large proportion of the matter presented to them, though necessary for a minute and critical knowledge or high proficiency in composition, may be altogether dispensed with by those whose chief object is to be able to read with ease the best works of classical Sanskrit literature. Book Synopsis The Harsa-Carita of Bana (Classic Reprint) by : E. B. Cowell
Download or read book The Harsa-Carita of Bana (Classic Reprint) written by E. B. Cowell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harsa-Carita of Bana The great merit of the Harsa-carita consists in the fact that it is a very early attempt at an historical romance. Bana's other work, the Kadambari 1, and Subandhu's Vasa vadatta deal with mythological fiction, and everything is viewed through a highly poetical atmosphere; and the Daca-kumara-carita is equally based on pure imagination, although its characters, as in the picaresco literature of modern Europe, are the exaggerated pictures of the vulgar rogues and ruffians of every great city. But the author of the Harsa-carita has taken his own sovereign as his hero and has woven the story out of the actual events of his reign. The narrative can be often illustrated by contemporary inscriptions, - in fact it is as much based on real events as Scott's Quentin Durward or Waverley. This gives to it a peculiar character which distinguishes it from all other works of Sanskrit literature. In studying any other classical San skrit writing we are generally obliged to infer the date of its composition by a careful examination of the accidental allusions or the peculiar words and phrases which it may contain, or by tracing the earliest quotations from it in subsequent authors; it is the special interest of the Harsa carita that it treats of a period, which happens to be almost as familiar to the student of Indian history as the reign of any of the early Muhammadan monarchs of Northern India. Download or read book Indian Idylls written by Edwin Arnold and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Idylls: From the Sanskrit of the Mahabharata The present volume contains such translations as I have from time to time made out of this prodigious epic, which is seven-fold greater in bulk than the Iliad and Odyssey taken together. All the stories here extracted are new to English literature, with the exception of a few passages of the Savitri and the Nala and Damayanti, which was long ago most faithfully rendered by Dean Milman, the version being published side by side with a clear and excellent Sanskrit text edited by Professor Monier Williams, C. I. E. But that presentation of the beautiful and brilliant legend - with all its conspicuous merits - seems better adapted to aid the student than adequately to reproduce the swift march of narrative, and old-world charm of the Indian tale, which I, also, have therefore ventured to transcribe; with all deference and gratitude to my predecessors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relatives: Being Further Verses Translated From the Sanskrit I have striven faithfully for a literal rendering. Though a rendering into verse cannot be quite as close as a prose version, there are, in the shorter pieces and in the Thief's Song, no wilful additions or subtractions. In the longer narrative selections some condensation seemed desirable; here, too, noth ing is added. I am under obligations to the University of Cali farnia Chronicle for permission to reprint certain verses which first appeared in its pages.
