Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Stuart Blackie was one of the most impressive and influential figures of nineteenth-century Scotland, as well as one of the most striking and flamboyant. As an intellectual he translated Goethe's Faust and brought first-hand knowledge of German philosophy to Scotland as a means of keeping the Enlightenment tradition alive. As first Professor of Humanity at Aberdeen from 1839 to 1852 and then as Professor of Greek at Edinburgh until 1882, he played a, perhaps the, central role in modernising the Scottish university curriculum, removing the dead hand of theological orthodoxy, raising standards (and the entry age), introducing tutorial teaching and establishing new chairs (including the Edinburgh chair of Celtic). His role in the reform of secondary school teaching was equally central. But Blackie was also a great 'public man', corresponding with great and famous throughout Great Britain and Europe, from Goethe and Carlyle to Ruskin and Gladstone, and filling the pages of newspapers and journals with writings on the major issues of the day. For the last thirty years of his life he became closely involved in issues of Scottish nationalism and home rule, and as champion of the crofters is largely responsible for their contemporary survival and unique status. Despite the existence of a rich archive of his papers and letters, there has been only one book devoted to his life: The Life of Professor John Stuart Blackie, the most distinguished Scotsman of the day, edited by J. G. Duncan and published in 1895.

Book Synopsis The Queensland Caesar by : Denver Beanland
Download or read book The Queensland Caesar written by Denver Beanland and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book provides a fresh analysis of Queensland during the colonial era. It provides new insights into Queenslands past. Sir Thomas McIlwraith thundered across Queensland's political and business landscape for 30 years. The three times Premier took bold and audacious actions, and had the energy and motivation to drive not only the colony's economic development, but also his own business enterprises. The biography analyses McIlwraith's progressive beliefs in economic development, European settlement, railways, responsible government, nationalism, federation, republicanism, defence and foreign policy, issues that are as relevant today as they were in the colonial era. The publication narrates the history of one of Queensland great political figures, charting the trials and tribulations of arguably one of the most significant Scotsmen to come to the Antipodes. Modern day historians have presented McIlwraith as a larger-than-life conservative entrepreneur rather than a classical laissez-faire liberal who strived to make Queensland the premier colony of Australia.

Download or read book Ruskin's Myths written by Dinah Birch and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and accessible study of John Ruskin's writings traces the evolution of his understanding and use of mythology. Though he evinced a Christian distrust of mythology in his early work, Ruskin came to revere and use it, finding in its multiple significance ways of articulating both private obsession and public debate. He insisted that historical scholarship could never completely uncover the meaning of myth, that it was essentially a religious phenomenon founded on an ancient understanding of the natural world. Through close readings of a wide range of Ruskin's writings--autobiography, art history, politics, and science--Birch reveals how deeply all of his work and thought are pervaded by this imaginative engagement with mythology.
