Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of 35 arrangements of early music from Medieval and Renaissance Europe presents familiar pieces like Greensleeves, Canarios, Wilson’s Wild and Kemp’s Jig, as well as pieces that you have probably heard but never knew their origins. Then too, the book includes pieces that reach deep into the repertoire and are new to most listeners and players. This volume contains a mix of vocal and instrumental compositions, all treated with the same melodic emphasis, using both traditional and modal harmonic accompaniment. When appropriate, the use of polyphony to create interesting harmonic structures and modal passing tones were used—a common practice in vocal music of the era. While keeping these arrangements within the language of the period, occasionally a harmonic twist was added for freshness and interest. The arrangements are in standard or dropped-D tuning and are suitable for both steel and nylon-string guitar performance. In addition, the pieces appear in standard notation and tablature so are easily accessible to the intermediate guitarist. To facilitate performance, this book includes access to online audio of every tune, expertly recorded by the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the parlor was a room set aside for particular functions. Before the advent of the radio, it was the place where formal presentations were staged, including amateur and semi-professional concerts. This classical guitar solo collection for the intermediate to advanced player offers nine engaging and lyrical European and North American favorites of this bygone era. All of the solos are presented in standard notation only and played on authentic reproductions of period instruments on the book’s online companion recording. Author Joseph Mayes plays works by well-known guitarist-composers Carulli, Coste and Giuliani as well as the lesser-known but deserving “Kathleen Mavoureen—Romanza” by Frederick N. Crouch arranged by Charles de Janon, and Felix Arndt’s “Nola,” one of the era’s most popular ragtime piano themes, here transcribed and arranged by William Foden and the author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents 37 pieces of Renaissance guitar music transcribed for solo fingerstyle ukulele together with the author’s recordings of every transcription. Moreover, a generous introduction provides a brief history of the Renaissance guitar, tips on period ornamentation and musicianship, recommended recordings, and invaluable resources for further research of your own. Throughout Europe, the Renaissance guitar was a popular instrument in the middle of the sixteenth century. Its composers left us a treasure-trove of music, from rustic dances to chansons and elaborate fantasias. Five-hundred years later, this music fits beautifully on the Renaissance guitar’s musical descendant, the ukulele. The Renaissance guitar and the ukulele share an almost identical tuning. As the transcriptions in this book are written in standard notation and tablature, any type of ukulele, from soprano to baritone—as well as the top four strings of the guitar— can be used to play them. Most of the pieces are in standard gCEA or GCEA tuning; the seven pieces in the second section of the book, however, require low-G tuning to render the counterpoint as written. It’s also possible for guitar and baritone uke players to read the tablature provided. The music will sound a perfect 4th lower than the notation, but as there was no standard pitch in the time of the Renaissance guitar, modern players should feel no obligation to play this music at fixed pitch. If you wish to read from the tablature and sound in the same key as the notation for ensemble purposes, guitar and baritone uke players merely need to place a capo at the fifth fret. With a certain sense of historical irony, the music of the Renaissance guitar is here reborn on modern fretted instruments.
