Films represented in the book include "The Perils of Pauline" (1914), "The Birth of a Nation" (1915), "The Spoilers" (1914), "Intolerance" (1916), "Hell's Hinges" (1916), "Broken Blossoms" (1919), "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1920), "Way Down East" (1920), "The Mark of Zorro" (1920), "Tol' able David" (1921), "Orphans of the Storm" (1921), "The Kid" (1921), "The Sheik" (1921), "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" (1921), "Nanook of the North" (1922), "Safety Last" (1923), "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1923), "The Covered Wagon" (1923), "The Ten Commandments" (1923), "Greed" (1924), "The Iron Horse" (1924), "Sherlock, Jr." (1924), "Peter Pan" (1924), "The Big Parade" (1925), "The Gold Rush" (1925), "The Phantom of the Opera' (1925), "Ben Hur" (1925), "Son of the Sheik" (1926), "The Lost World" (1925), "Sparrows" (1926), "The Scarlett Letter" (1926), "The Black Pirate" (1926), "Don Juan" (1926), "Seventh Heaven" (1926), "What Price Glory? (1926), "Beau Geste" (1926), "For Heaven's Sake" (1926), "Flesh and the Devil" (1927), "The General" (1927), "Wings" (1927), "Sunrise" (1927), "Thc Cat and the Canary" (1927), "Our Dancing Daughters" (1928), "The Crowd" (1928), "The Circus" (1928), "City Lights" (1931) and "Tabu" (1931). Great silent film stars and filmmakers represented in this book include Richard Arlen, John Barrymore, Richard, Barthelmess, Wallace Beery, Clara Bow, Lon Chaney, Charlie Chaplin, Joan Crawford, Ronald Colman, Cecil B. DeMille, Douglas Fairbanks, William Farnum, John Ford, Greta Garbo, John Gilbert, D.W. Griffith, Lillian and Dorothy Gish, William S. Hart, Buster Keaton, Harry Langdon, Harold Lloyd, Ramon Novarro, Mary Pickford, Charles "Buddy" Rogers, Constance Talmadge, Eric Von Stroheim, Rudolph Valentino and more. Book excerpt: Film buffs, graphic designers, and art students will relish this beautifully produced and strikingly illustrated volume. Arranged in roughly chronological order, it brings together movie posters from around the world, starting with Charlie Chaplin film ads and the Russian Revolutionary movie posters of the 1910s, then spanning the century to show posters publicizing hits of the 1990s, including The Silence of the Lambs, Spike Lee films, and many more. The bookï¿1/2s sections focus on renowned individual designers, directors, movies, and genres. Important poster designers such as Saul Bass, Jan Lenica, and Juan Gatti receive particular attention, as do great directors who had strong opinions about how their films should be represented. Among the latter are Alfred Hitchcock, Jean-Luc Godard, and Otto Preminger. All major film genres are representedï¿1/2musicals, Kung Fu movies, films noir, westerns (including so-called ï¿1/2spaghetti westernsï¿1/2 filmed in Italy), science fiction classics, and others. Readers are treated to examples of movie posters not only from the United States, Britain, and France, but also to previously unpublished examples from countries as diverse as Poland, China, and Cuba. For instance, fans of Orson Welles might be surprised to see the previously unpublished Italian poster advertising Citizen Kane under its Italian title, Quarto Potere (The Fourth Estate). This handsome volume will be valued by graphic designers, poster collectors, and anyone sharing the popular passion for cinema.

Book excerpt: A one-of-a-kind collection of movie posters spanning fifty years, from silent films to Cinemascope For four decades film historian Ira M. Resnick has been amassing a superb collection of 2,000 vintage movie posters and 1,500 stills, which has never before been published. Starstruck: Vintage Movie Posters from Classic Hollywood features the best of Resnick’s collection, with vivid reproductions of 250 posters and forty stills from the golden age of Hollywood, 1912 to 1962. In a moving introduction, Resnick relates how his love of vintage movie art translated into a career as a collector and the founder of the Motion Picture Arts Gallery, the first gallery devoted exclusively to the art of the movies. Resnick’s firsthand account offers entertaining anecdotes about how he managed to acquire such stellar film artwork, as well as historical information about the stars and films shown on the pieces he collected. Guiding the reader through the best posters and stills of his collection, Resnick provides a tour of cinematic history, starting in the silent film era and continuing up to Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961). By showcasing several posters for each performer—such as Lillian Gish, the Marx Brothers, Marilyn Monroe, John Barrymore, and Audrey Hepburn—Resnick offers a unique method of charting the evolution of each movie star’s career. Organizing his account both chronologically and thematically, in later chapters Resnick discusses some of Hollywood’s legendary directors and films, and critiques fantastic graphic art from little-known films. Bonus material includes a list of Resnick’s fifty favorite one-sheets, helpful tips for the collector, and a glossary of terms and poster sizes. A must-have book for every collector and film buff, Starstruck offers a beautifully illustrated, personal tour of a bygone age of the motion picture advertising industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 100 Silent Films provides an authoritative and accessible history of silent cinema through one hundred of its most interesting and significant films. As Bryony Dixon contends, silent cinema is not a genre; it is the first 35 years of film history, a complex negotiation between art and commerce and a union of creativity and technology. At its most grand – on the big screen with a full orchestral accompaniment – it is magnificent, permitting a depth of emotional engagement rarely found in other fields of cinema. Silent film was hugely popular in its day, and its success enabled the development of large-scale film production in the United States and Europe. It was the start of our fascination with the moving image as a disseminator of information and as mass entertainment with its consequent celebrity culture. The digital revolution in the last few years and the restoration and reissue of archival treasures have contributed to a huge resurgence of interest in silent cinema. Bryony Dixon's illuminating guide introduces a wide range of films of the silent period (1895–1930), including classics such as The Birth of a Nation (1915), The General (1926), Metropolis (1927), Sunrise (1927) and Pandora's Box (1928), alongside more unexpected choices, and represents major genres and directors of the period – Griffith, Keaton, Chaplin, Murnau, Sjöström, Dovzhenko and Eisenstein – together with an introductory overview and useful filmographic and bibliographic information.

Book excerpt: He has been called "arguably the single most important artist produced by the cinema, certainly its most extraordinary performer and probably still its most universal icon" For moviegoers, he was simply, Charlie Chaplin, who won their hearts and made them split their sides in laughter when he portrayed the Little Tramp, his most memorable iconic onscreen character in silent films. Chaplin wasn't only the Little Tramp. He was a comic genius whom produced, directed and wrote most of his, even later composing the music for him. He was the total filmmaker. The “Charlie Chaplin Movie Poster Book” captures the imagination and genius of one of the most important figures of the film industry, presenting, for the first time, more than 50 vintage movie posters in print, all in full color. It represents a period of filmmaking which will never be duplicated. The book is divided into eight sections. The first five are by the studios or distribution companies, in chronilogical order: Keystone, Essanay, Mutual, First National, United Artists. Then there are British Productions, Foreign Releases and Compilation Films. The “Charlie Chaplin Movie Poster Book” is a fitting tribute to a true film pioneer, a legend, whose timeless films will never fade, but continue to entertain and inspire audiences for generations to come.

Book excerpt: By the mid-1920s, Buster Keaton had established himself as one of the geniuses of cinema with such films as Sherlock, Jr., The Navigator, and his 1927 work The General, which was the highest ranked silent on the American Film Institute's survey of the 100 greatest films. Before Keaton ventured into longer works, however, he had honed his skills as an actor, writer, and director of short films produced in the early 1920s. In Buster Keaton’s Silent Shorts: 1920-1923, James L. Neibaur and Terri Niemi provide a film-by-film assessment of these brilliant two-reelers. The authors discuss the significance of each short—The High Sign, One Week, Convict 13, The Scarecrow, Neighbors, The Haunted House, Hard Luck, The Goat, The Playhouse, The Boat, The Paleface, Cops, My Wife’s Relations, The Blacksmith, Frozen North, Daydreams, The Electric House, The Balloonatic, and The Love Nest—to the Keaton filmography, as well as each film’s importance to cinema. Offering a clear and in-depth perspective on these 19 films, the authors explain what makes these shorts effective and why they’re funny. Buster Keaton’s Silent Shorts will enlighten both scholars and casual fans alike about the early work produced by one of cinema's most gifted comedians and filmmakers.

This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She made her screen debut in silent films. She was even one of the King of Comedy Mack Sennett's Bathing Beauties in dozens of slapstick comedy shorts. As her fame grew, she found her niche in screwball comedies of the 1930s, earning her the title of the Queen of Screwball Comedy. She is Carole Lombard. The Carole Lombard Movie Poster Book features a collection of vintage movie posters, poster art or publicity stills from 50 of her film appearances from Buck Jones' Hearts and Spurs (1923) to her final role in Ernst Lubitsch's To Be or Not to Be (1942). Lombard, at age 12, made her screen debut in the silent film, A Perfect Crime (1921). Her first screwball comedy was Howard Hawks' Twentieth Century (1934). That led to her appearing in films such as Hands Across the Table (1935), My Man Godfrey (1936) and Nothing Sacred (1937). For her role in My Man Godfrey, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. By the end of the 1930s, in attempt to win an Oscar, Lombard tried serious roles. When that goal failed, she returned to comedy roles, appearing in Alfred Hitchcock's Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941) and Ernst Lubitsch's To Be or Not to Be (1942), her final film role. Sadly, Lombard's career ended abruptly when she died at the age of 33 in an aircraft crash on Mount Potosi, Nevada. She was returning from a War Bond tour. In all, Lombard appeared in nearly 80 films, including many bit and uncredited roles in silent and sound films. This collection includes films for which promotional art was available. Clearly, although her career was tragically cut short, Carole Lombard left her mark. It's no wonder she is remembered as one of the definitive actresses of the screwball comedy genre and American comedy, and that she ranks among the American Film Institute's greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema.

Through the posters of the 1930s and 40s we can relive the classic era of Hollywood, to the 1950s posters promoting the use of wide screen. As the Hollywood studio system declined, the rise of European cinema and other national movements in Asia and beyond would introduce new ideas to narrative films and their advertising which would have a global impact. A collection of posters featuring movies which have helped shape the history of world cinema. A great collection of not only the posters of the blockbusters or classics movies of Hollywood Golden Era, but also great European, Latin American and Asian movies which changed film-making history.
