Book excerpt: Soldiers are not poets? Albert Seraphin brilliantly belies this trite assertion. He is the living proof that a soldier, while answering the clarion call, can hold a mighty pen to advocate peace and unity. Sometimes bucolic, often harshly realistic, his pungent words reflect the vibrant vision of a Nigerian citizen whose basic objective is to serve his fatherland. To pay tribute to its past and pave the way for a flourishing future. His forthright voice pleads for awareness and oneness in every situation, whether he depicts the hardships of service, not forgetting to salute the bravery of the soldiers and the bonds between them, or his bleeding pen pleads for safe driving, women rights, and an end to the internecine feuds that tear his country apart. He is on permanent poetic duty. His forceful Clarion Call holds redemptive powers, and certainly calls for attention Brigitte Poirson, Poet, teacher and promoter of African Poetry

Welcome to the night, where mice stir and furry moths flutter. Where snails spiral into shells as orb spiders circle in silk. Where the roots of oak trees recover and repair from their time in the light. Where the porcupette eats delicacies—raspberry leaves!—and coos and sings. Come out to the cool, night wood, and buzz and hoot and howl—but do beware of the great horned owl—for it’s wild and it’s windy way out in the woods!

Book excerpt: Cross Lake and Other Poems is the story of the author's ancestral home in the Great North Woods of Maine. Located in the Aroostook, a mysterious narrative thread unites the disparate components of this intriguing volume. The time is 2028 and yet time stands still in these poems and many concern themselves with the past and how the past influences present and future. Incidental to this unraveling story, this volume also touches on the ravenous timber cutting of the 1800's and turn of the century logging drives, and its adverse effects on Maine's environment. The poetry finally traces the great arc from cradle to grave.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here's a treat for young Mother Goose fans who are ready for something new. With the lively lilt of nursery rhymes and an abundance of silliness, these poems introduce the naughty girl who threw a bun at the teacher, the fellow who eats all his meals upside down, and the king and queen who can't agree on anything at all--to mention just a few of the quirky characters who frolic through these pages. Short, catchy verses, collected here in picture book form for the first time, will delight readers and listeners with their gentle absurdity. Katja Bandlow's illustrations depict the silly folk with whimsy and good cheer. Christopher Corker, Lanky Lawrence, and their eccentric friends deserve a place next to Jack Sprat and Peter Pumpkin Eater on every nursery bookshelf!

Book excerpt: Poetry. Jewish Studies. Philip Terman's latest poetry collection, THIS CRAZY DEVOTION, begins appropriately enough with "Tormented Meshuggenehs," "the crazy sages... / who dervished across the hayfields / and paused to yawp a parable to the cows about the seven beggars..." This passage announces much about the poetry that follows: that its craziness indeed is of the order of devotion in the spiritual sense, rooted in Judaism; and also that it often takes place in bucolic surroundings, rooted in the land. And why is this a little surprising, this conjunction of Jewish life and rural setting? For Terman they are seamless and sacred, and by portraying his Jewishness as woven through a life and landscape familiar to many (non-Jewish) readers, he dispels stereotypes and creates a community of mutual recognition and understanding. That would be virtue enough to applaud this collection, but it offers many other pleasures. "I am talking about this world, there is no other," he declares in the long and lovely meditative "Garden Chronicle" that forms the final section of the book. Such a world it is, full of all of the things to which he is crazily devoted, all of the things he writes about with such acuity and tenderness in these poems: heritage and faith, social justice, poetry, and even (in the title poem) almost meeting Bob Dylan--but foremost, his family and nature, both of which sustain him. He communes with ancestors, a grandfather he was too young to remember, who must have sung to him in Yiddish (and who, he supposes, just might have posed for Chagall). He imagines the radio interview his father might have given, replete with Borscht Belt humor, and recalls going for bagels with "the schlemiel... / who dated your sister-in-law / after your brother died." He devotes the second section, "Of Longing and Chutzpah," to memories of his mother, and in one of the most humorous and poignant moments recalls how in childhood his mother cut his hair to save money, an act Terman likens to "sculpting" him into all the things she might have wished him to be, "the boy she wants to be a mensch." (Based on the accounting he gives here, she succeeded. She also carved out a considerable poet.) Most of all, he writes of "The love of the long married," of children "at the kitchen table / doing homework," waiting on a school bus which arrives bearing all the hopes and happiness in the world. He gives the last word to the daughter whose question "After Later?" signifies "no set time, farther than the horizon, / on top of the sky, around the bend, outside this moment we're in" when, perhaps "all those things they said would happen / must surely have occurred." Such a lovely description of faith, so worthy of devotion.

The poems are short and direct, with strong, fresh images, and readers can easily imagine themselves in the roles she portrays: welder, librarian, surgeon, retail clerk, camp counselor. The illustrations are as original as the text---amazing multilayered collages made of paper, found objects, ephemera, photographs, dried flowers, and archival images. Steady Hands is sure to inspire discussion, creative writing, art projects, and new answers to the old question: What do you want to do when you grow up?
