Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the political and social experiences of African Americans in transition from enslaved to citizen Claiming Freedom is a noteworthy and dynamic analysis of the transition African Americans experienced as they emerged from Civil War slavery, struggled through emancipation, and then forged on to become landowners during the Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction period in the Georgia lowcountry. Karen Cook Bell's work is a bold study of the political and social strife of these individuals as they strived for and claimed freedom during the nineteenth century. Bell begins by examining the meaning of freedom through the delineation of acts of self-emancipation prior to the Civil War. Consistent with the autonomy that they experienced as slaves, the emancipated African Americans from the rice region understood citizenship and rights in economic terms and sought them not simply as individuals for the sake of individualism, but as a community for the sake of a shared destiny. Bell also examines the role of women and gender issues, topics she believes are understudied but essential to understanding all facets of the emancipation experience. It is well established that women were intricately involved in rice production, a culture steeped in African traditions, but the influence that culture had on their autonomy within the community has yet to be determined. A former archivist at the National Archives and Records Administration, Bell has wielded her expertise in correlating federal, state, and local records to expand the story of the all-black town of 1898 Burroughs, Georgia, into one that holds true for all the American South. By humanizing the African American experience, Bell demonstrates how men and women leveraged their community networks with resources that enabled them to purchase land and establish a social, political, and economic foundation in the rural and urban post-war era.

Book excerpt: Was America founded on Judeo-Christian principles? Are the Ten Commandments the basis for American law? In the paperback edition of this critically acclaimed book, a constitutional attorney settles the debate about religion's role in America's founding. In today's contentious political climate, understanding religion's role in American government is more important than ever. Christian nationalists assert that our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, and advocate an agenda based on this popular historical claim. But is this belief true? The Founding Myth answers the question once and for all. Andrew L. Seidel builds his case by comparing the Ten Commandments to the Constitution and contrasting biblical doctrine with America's founding philosophy, showing that the Declaration of Independence contradicts the Bible. Thoroughly researched, this persuasively argued and fascinating book proves that America was not built on the Bible and that Christian nationalism is un-American. Includes a new epilogue reflecting on the role Christian nationalism played in fomenting the January 6, 2021, insurrection in DC and the warnings the nation missed.

He speaks directly to new students about what a college education is for… and how not to mess it up. This information is enormously useful for parents, as well—helping them understand what their child will encounter and how best to support them on this transformative journey. Drawing on decades of experience in higher education, Glotzbach invites students to approach their college years with soaring expectations and effectively pursue their aspirations, from the very first day! Written in a conversational tone and illustrated with authentic student stories, Embrace Your Freedom offers practical, down-to-earth guidance about the decisions and actions that enable students to complete their college career with satisfaction and pride. It also addresses the vital issues of student mental health, novel drug threats, generative AI, cyberbullying, gun-related campus violence, contested speech, and many others. This book highlights the skills students need to thrive in the 21st century work-world. It also challenges them to understand and embrace their new level of freedom, take charge of their well-being, to balance work and play, take good risks, learn from failure, and prepare to claim their place as informed and responsible citizens in our democratic republic. Although these goals can feel overwhelming for any student, achieving them establishes core values that define a purposeful and powerful undergraduate experience—one that leads to the accomplishments that ultimately make a college degree worth the time, effort, and expense it involves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claim Your Brain is an idea that was inspired from a conversation I was having with someone who was continually refusing to take charge of her life. She was allowing her feelings to rule her mind instead of just thinking clearly and without fear. We need to realize that things change; the only thing that never changes is truth. In the first part of Malachi 3, we see Malachi 3:6—“For I [am] the Lord, I change not.” This is what God is. He is unchanging. What he was in the Old Testament times, he still is today. God never changes. His Word never changes either; it is as it was originally given. There are many versions of the Bible out there as languages change and new synonyms are added. So then the versions will be revised. But as it was originally given to holy men of God to write down what God wanted written, that will always be constant and faithful.

Book excerpt: No matter your circumstance, everyone is born with a birthright and an inheritance. God has promised this inheritance to each and every one of us, although many of us may not know how to access our birthright—and some of us may not even know what we will inherit. Birthright of Freedom is an in-depth Bible study centered on the Old Testament book of Judges. It focuses on seven major oppressors of Israel during that period, explaining their origins and the generational sins that typified their relationship with Israel. The study looks at the importance of covenant, covenant blessings, and consequences of covenant violations. There is opportunity to discover contemporary manifestations of those same generational curses, using the biblical model to deal with generational sin. Alongside each curse, authors Doyle & Rebecca Musser look at the covenant blessings God has given us through the redemptive gifts and the redeemer himself, Jesus. As Jesus proclaimed, we are all heirs to the throne of the kingdom of God, and he has given us the freedom to claim our place alongside him in this coming kingdom. By identifying the specific areas that hold us back from the freedom God intends, you too can apply the Word to your life and begin following kingdom protocol.
