Well into a successful and rewarding career at the Federal Bureau of Investigations, married to a highly respected County Sheriff, she is just beginning to seriously and privately entertain thoughts of starting a family. The beautiful CJ and husband Broderick have been so immersed in their careers that having children seemed to be far into the future, if at all. The two professional law enforcers balance an unshakeable love for one another and an unbreakable dedication to their professions. Before CJ can approach Broderick with her deep desire to finally be a mother, their lives are ripped explosively apart. A madman CJ helped to send to prison has escaped and his cohort from the earlier crime spree is now loose as well. The escapees vow revenge on CJ and anyone close to her. At the same time, forces within the bureau itself would like to see CJ fail. Can CJ's confidence and inner strength, combined with uncommon crime-fighting skills carry her through the mayhem and tragedy that awaits?

Book excerpt: Candice DeLong has been called a real-life Clarice Starling and a female Donnie Brasco. She has been on the front lines of some of the FBIs most gripping and memorable cases, including being chosen as one of the three agents to carry out the manhunt for the Unabomber in Lincoln, Montana. She has tailed terrorists, gone undercover as a gangsters moll, and posed as the madam for a call-girl ring. Now for the first time she reveals the dangers and rewards of being a woman on the front lines of the worlds most powerful law enforcement agency. She traces the unusual career path that led her to crime fighting, and recounts the incredible obstacles she faced as a woman and as a fledgling agent. She takes readers step by step through the profiling process and shows how she helped solve a number of incredible cases. The story of her role as a lead investigator on the notorious Tylenol Murderer case is particularly compelling. Finally, she gives the true, insiders story behind the investigation that led to the arrest of the Unabomber including information that the media cant or wont reveal. A remarkable portrait of courage and grace under fire, Special Agent offers a missing chapter to the annals of law enforcement and a dramatic and often funny portrait of an extraordinary woman who has dedicated her heart and soul to the crusade against crime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winning the Social Media War outlines how conservatives in the United States ceded the culture war to the left and provides a playbook with techniques on how to effectively win back influence over the culture through the use of social media. Through novel interviews, independent research, and case studies of particular accounts and individuals, Alex Bruesewitz threads together conceptual and mechanical ways of engaging with and using social media for maximum impact and influence. Winning the Social Media War reveals why conservatives lose to the left on social media and provides a tool kit to turn the tide back toward conservatism. Whether you are seeking to advance your personal social media status or that of a candidate, organization, brand, or movement, you will benefit from the collective years of experience of influential conservative figures. This book is required reading for conservatives aiming to stand athwart history yelling, “Stop!” with the amplitude that people—and God-willing, the nation—can actually hear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating new book, Vincent Henry (a 21-year veteran of the NYPD who recently retired to become a university professor) explores the psychological transformations and adaptations that result from police officers' encounters with death. Police can encounter death frequently in the course of their duties, and these encounters may range from casual contacts with the deaths of others to the most profound and personally consequential confrontations with their own mortality. Using the 'survivor psychology' model as its theoretical base, this insightful and provocative research ventures into a previously unexplored area of police psychology to illuminate and explore the new modes of adaptation, thought, and feeling that result from various types of death encounters in police work. The psychology of survival asserts that the psychological world of the survivor--one who has come in close physical or psychic contact with death but nevertheless managed to live--is characterized by five themes: psychic numbing, death guilt, the death imprint, suspicion of counterfeit nurturance, and the struggle to make meaning. These themes become manifest in the survivor's behavior, permeating his or her lifestyle and worldview. Drawing on extensive interviews with police officers in five nominal categories--rookie officers, patrol sergeants, crime scene technicians, homicide detectives, and officers who survived a mortal combat situation in which an assailant or another officer died--Henry identifies the impact such death encounters have upon the individual, the police organization, and the occupational culture of policing. He has produced a comprehensive and highly textured interpretation of police psychology and police behavior, bolstered by the unique insights that come from his personal experience as an officer, his intimate familiarity with the subtleties and nuances of the police culture's value and belief systems, and his meticulous research and rigorous method. Death Work provides a unique prism through which to view the individual, organizational, and social dynamics of contemporary urban policing. With a foreword by Robert Jay Lifton and a chapter devoted to the local police response to the World Trade Center attacks, Death Work will be of interest to psychologists and criminal justice experts, as well as police officers eager to gain insight into their unique relationship to death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Washington D.C. isn't known as the "District of Crime" or "Murder Capital of America" for nothing. Though the capital city's motto is "justice for all," D.C. has a darker side, including an extensive history of crimes and misdemeanors, some political and some not. The Crime Buff's Guide to Outlaw Washington D.C. is the ultimate guidebook to the criminal and seedy history of the nation's capital -- plus Maryland, Northern Virginia and (ironically) Arlington National Cemetery. It also contains an entire chapter pinpointing key and little-known sites in the Lincoln Assassination. With photographs, maps, directions, and precise GPS coordinates, this collection of outlaw tales serves as both a travel guide and an entertaining and enlightening read. It is a one-of-a-kind exploration into well-known and more obscure sites in D.C. that retain memories of bandits, corpse-snatchers, murderers, snipers, bootleggers, assassins, rogue scientists, spies, mobsters and corrupt politicians -- even a legendary serial killer dressed in a bunny suit -- and their scandalous deeds.

Book excerpt: In his extravagantly intimate autobiographical novel, Lander Duncan reconstructs the heart shattering images and remembrances of the dark, violent, and incoherent first two decades of his life. PROMISES Seduced by CJ, a sleek-framed Tuskegee cadet, the mixed-race diabolically beautiful Abigail, who is the fifteen-year-old daughter of the dean of faculty, sets this novel in motion when she becomes pregnant. With a reluctant agreement from her father, Abigail marries CJ and defiantly departs for his family farm in the Arkansas Delta. CJ reports for active duty to a segregated Ft. Huachuca in Arizona. As a powerful chronicle of a time, the novel's sobering historical backdrop is dramatically revealed through Abigail's culture collisions and misadventures intersecting with the harsh, alienating, and unpredictable Delta life and the racial indignities and clashes that CJ confronts while commanding a combat anti-demolition company in Europe. SECRETS After returning home a war hero, humiliation and bitterness eat away at CJ who must take a demeaning job as a railroad Red Cap to support his family. CJ's offer of a steadying hand to a white woman who stumbles as she gets off a train turns into an incident that produces a night of horror. The lives and fate of the Duncan family are forever changed. Exiled to a small, racially divided Pennsylvania town, Abigail, emotionally damaged by the ordeal, compels Lander and his brothers to promise never to reveal anything about their frightening past. Abigail's habit of hiding things—even losses, disappointments, humiliations, and racial identity—becomes a great burden that keeps her sons' lives in upheaval. CONFESSIONS Abandoned by his mother and estranged for more than a decade from his family, Lander is summoned home for the last few days of Abigail's life. Past informs present, and present recasts past; the brothers exchange stories that trace the vast emotional terrain of havoc their mother so thoughtlessly wrecked, the sense of confusion that shifted beneath their feet, the doors of self-perception that slammed in their face. They want desperately to love Abigail in all her flawed, outrageous humanity and find an opportunity to forgive the felonies she committed against them. A memorable cast emerges in poignant and too few moments of triumph. Sifting through Abigail's possessions, an undated letter is discovered that produces a damning and destructive secret.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supernatural creatures have roamed the Earth since the beginning of time. There was a time when humans would not tolerate having vampires and other creatures in their midst, stealing their young and killing their fellow human beings. These humans took care of business with pitchforks, sharpened stakes, and fires. As the centuries passed, the supernatural creatures learned that they needed to hide in order to survive. As they did, humans evolved, and after a few decades, humans no longer believed the tales from mythology and folklore. Then the creatures became more bold again, showing themselves when they should have stayed hidden. In 1945, the assistant director of the FBI suffered a horrible tragedy, which he learned later was supernaturally related. He created a small branch of the Department of Justice called the Bureau of Supernatural Investigation – the BSI. Little did he know that there were already men and women policing the world of the supernatural – or the "Fae." The only difference was that this other group had a huge advantage over the humans running the BSI; they were also immortal, just like the creatures they policed. Should the BSI and the Immortals work together to keep the peace? Follow agents and Immortals from the four supernaturally busiest places in the country – San Francisco, Chicago, New Orleans, and Washington D.C. and watch the BSI evolve. Vampires, shapeshifters, succubae, and Immortals. What is the Justice Department hiding? BSI: Bureau of Supernatural Investigation is an accompanying novel to both the Enchanted Immortals series, the Ayla St. John Chronicles, and Death's Kiss series, and can be read between or at any time during these series.
