Book Synopsis Political Change in Morocco by : Douglas Elliott Ashford
Download or read book Political Change in Morocco written by Douglas Elliott Ashford and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to develop new forms of political expression and political participation on the national level is one of the major problems facing newly independent countries. Mr. Ashford gives a careful description of the pattern of Moroccan national politics at the time of independence, and analyzes how this pattern was changed during the first three post-independence years. He provides a general outline of the ways a widely differentiated people can participate in the national politics of a developing country. Like Apter's books on Ghana and Uganda, and Wriggins’ book on Ceylon, this is an important study of the transition to independence of a postwar, rapidly developing political system. Book excerpt: For many contemporary observers and analysts, Morocco remains a mystery. So close to Europe, Morocco simultaneously represents a similarly open political culture and its complete antithesis: Human rights associations openly challenge authoritarian rule, while an emphasis on Moroccan singularity and authenticity prevents the establishment of a real democracy. Widespread poverty and illiteracy co-exist with a flourishing entrepreneurial class and the display of conspicuous wealth in its cities; electoral institutions and political parties pay allegiance to a traditional monarch; disgruntled youth and inhabitants of shantytowns are receptive to the rhetoric of Islamic inspired violence and terror. This book provides an introductory overview of contemporary politics and international relations in Morocco, and gives an up to date assessment of the economy and recent history. Drawing on key academic texts, the author provides a detailed analysis of Morocco, focusing on issues such as: Morocco’s role within the region trade policies with Europe Morocco’s Western Sahara policy ways of dealing with Political Islam the extent to which European influence has affected Moroccan society. Easily accessible to non-specialists, practitioners, and upper level undergraduate students, the book will be essential reading for those working in the fields of Comparative Politics, International Relations and Middle East Studies.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Development in Morocco by : Sylvia I. Bergh
Download or read book The Politics of Development in Morocco written by Sylvia I. Bergh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1990s, Morocco has sought to present itself as a model of genuine and gradual reform, with decentralisation as a key tenet of this. Here, Sylvia Bergh investigates the dynamics of popular participation and local governance, testing the extent to which the current structure builds local capacity, or whether it is, in fact, a tool for 'soft' state control. She narrates the realities of local administration and civil society to shed critical light on questions of democratic transition in North Africa. Her assessment of decentralisation and participatory development projects in rural Morocco, and the legal and policy frameworks in which they operate, leads to the conclusion that they have generally not yet led to an expansion of a civil society able to build local capacity or enhance bottom-up empowerment. Grounded in an approach of the 'anthropology of policy', this book makes an important contribution to literature on the democratisation, development and governance in North Africa.

Book Synopsis Continuity and change before and after the Arab uprisings by : Paola Rivetti
Download or read book Continuity and change before and after the Arab uprisings written by Paola Rivetti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab uprisings of 2011 have sparked much scholarly discussion with regards to democratisation, the resilience of authoritarian rule, mobilisation patterns, and the relationship between secularism and Islam, all under the assumption that politics has changed for good in North Africa and the Middle East. While acknowledging the post-2011 transformations taking place in the region, this book brings to the forefront an understudied, yet crucial, aspect related to the uprisings, namely the interplay between continuity and change. Challenging simplified representations built around the positions that either ‘all has changed’ or ‘nothing has changed’, the in-depth case studies in this volume demonstrate how elements both of continuity, and rupture with the past, are present in the post-uprising landscapes of Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt. Public policy, contentious politics, the process of institution making and re-making, and the relations of power connecting national and international economies are at the core of the comparative investigations included in the book. The volume makes an important contribution to the study of North African politics, and to the study of political change and stability, by contrasting the different trajectories of the uprisings, and by offering theoretical reflections on their meaning, consequences and scope. This book was originally published as a special issue of the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies.
Book Synopsis State, Society & Democracy in Morocco by : Azzedine Layachi
Download or read book State, Society & Democracy in Morocco written by Azzedine Layachi and published by Center for Contemporary Arab. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Political scientist Azzedine Layachi examines relations between the state and society in Morocco and finds that perennial multiparty politics and an active associative life have not generated a pluralist and open political process nor strimulated the development of a civil society. He calls in to question the emperical significance and analytical usefulness of the whole notion of civil society in a country where the boundaries between state and society are blurred by strong institutional practices and by culturakl and religious beliefs."--Back cover.
Book Synopsis The Power of Civil Society in the Middle East and North Africa by : Ibrahim Natil
Download or read book The Power of Civil Society in the Middle East and North Africa written by Ibrahim Natil and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the power of civil society in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), in the context of the post-Arab Spring era, as well as more long-standing challenges and constraints in the region. In recent years, local civil society actors have faced significant challenges from social conservatism, conflict, violence, and the absence of democracy and exclusive political systems. Over the course of the book, the authors investigate how the sector has succeeded in achieving its own objectives despite these shifting conditions, the restrictive political environment and the complexity of the socio-cultural and economic context. Structured around the three themes of peace-building, development, and change, the book also addresses challenges faced by civil society organizations linked to ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversities as well as religious salient differences that are crucial markers of social and political identity. Case studies are drawn from the Palestinian Occupied Territories, Jordan, Iran, Nigeria, Niger, Egypt, and Morocco, and particular effort has been made to showcase original research from contributors who are from the region . This book will be of particular interest to researchers working on development, peace-building, conflict resolution, civil society, and politics within the MENA region.

Book Synopsis Civil Society, Women's Movement and the Moroccan State by : Mohammed Yachoulti
Download or read book Civil Society, Women's Movement and the Moroccan State written by Mohammed Yachoulti and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims generally to address the specificity of Moroccan civil society and assess its journey to contribute and deepen the political liberalization Morocco has engaged in since the early 1990s. Specifically, it seeks to assess the role of women's movement organizations, as part of this nascent Moroccan civil society, to undermine through their activism state's patriarchal laws in the light of a general activism that targets the change of laws and practices, and establishment of equality. Actually, the importance of this study resides in the fact that it sheds light on another understanding of the direction of civil society activism and struggles in autocratic states. It also helps in a better understanding of state's politics and strategies of government in Morocco.
Book Synopsis Democratization in Morocco by : Lise Storm
Download or read book Democratization in Morocco written by Lise Storm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-10-29 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the political games of the Moroccan democratization process in the period from independence in 1956 until 2006. By combining a great degree of political theory with empirical material on Morocco, it analyzes the strategies and actions of the various political actors and evaluates the level of democracy present in the country after the adoption of new constitutions in 1962, 1970, 1972, 1980, 1992 and 1996. Lise Storm demonstrates that in at least some instances, democratization has been more than simply a survival strategy – every so often, key figures within the political elite have taken the democratization process further than strictly needed for them to stay in power. In the case of Morocco, it has been the monarch who on more than one occasion has moved the country further towards the democratic ideal than he necessarily had to, and that sometimes even against the wishes of one or more of the established political parties. This book illustrates how the Moroccan political parties, like so many of their counterparts in the region, have become the main obstacle to further democratization as most of them have never honoured – or appear to have abandoned – the key function of political parties: popular representation. Democratization in Morocco will be a very valuable contribution to students and researchers interested in the dynamics behind the Moroccan democratization and the role of electoral politics in North African and Middle Eastern politics.

Download or read book Dangerous Alliances written by Lise Garon and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 2003-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Magreb's highly erratic encounter with democratization illuminates the complex and diverse encounters between civil society and the authorities in Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. As opposition has built up in each society, those in power have confronted the pressures for democratization. The author examines the role of the media in particular - both within these countries and internationally - as contested, but often compliant, terrain between governments and dissidents. She uses a dynamic systems model, incorporating the existence of fundamental conflict, to show how democratic institutions can become institutionalized, and the constant possibility of any democratic transition being reversed.
