Book Synopsis Gender, Development, and the State in India by : Carole Spary
Download or read book Gender, Development, and the State in India written by Carole Spary and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between the state, development policy, and gender (in)equality in India. It discusses the formation of state policy on gender and development in India in the post-1990 period through three key organising concepts of institutions, discourse, and agency. The book pays particular attention to whether the international policy language of gender mainstreaming has been adopted by the Indian state, and if so, to what extent and with what results. The author examines how these issues play out at multiple levels of governance – at both the national and the subnational (state) level in federal India. This comparative aspect is particularly important in the context of increasing autonomy in development policymaking in India in the 1990s, divergent development policy approaches and outcomes among states, and the emerging importance of subnational state development policies and programmes for women in this period. The author argues that the state is not a monolith but a heterogeneous, internally differentiated collection of institutions, which offers complex and varying opportunities and consequences for feminists engaging the state. Demonstrating that the Indian empirical case is illuminating for studies of the gendered politics of development, and international debates on gender mainstreaming, the book highlights the politics of negotiating gender equality strategies in the contemporary context of neo-liberal development and brings together complex issues of modernity, postcolonialism, identity politics, federalism, and equality within the broader context of the world’s largest democracy. This book will be of interest to scholars interested in the politics of gender equality, state feminism, and gender mainstreaming; federalism and multi-level governance; and development studies and gender in South Asia.
Book Synopsis Poverty and Exclusion of Minorities in China and India by : A. Bhalla
Download or read book Poverty and Exclusion of Minorities in China and India written by A. Bhalla and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-11-14 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muslim minorities in China and India form only a small fraction of their respective populations, yet as they principally live in troubled border states, they are of key strategic importance in the war on terror. In this global context, this book explores whether economics is more important than the suppression of rights in explaining social unrest.
Book Synopsis Poverty and Exclusion of Minorities in China and India by : A.S. Bhalla
Download or read book Poverty and Exclusion of Minorities in China and India written by A.S. Bhalla and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-04 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, a second edition, includes new data from the 2010 Census of India and NSS reports on consumer expenditure (2011-12), health and education (2014) to examine poverty in China and India, and how it connects with minorities. Poverty has generally become less acute in both China and India, thanks to an impressively rapid growth especially between 2010 and 2015 when the rest of the world including the US and the EU slowed down following the economic recession of 2008. But the issues of income and non-income inequalities (especially malnutrition in India), marginalization and social exclusion remain as acute as ever in both countries. As well as the use of new primary material in every chapter, the book also critically examines new relevant studies and responds to global perspectives on minority issues. It canvasses a broad range of subjects from global terrorism and civil wars in Libya and Syria, to the Arab Spring and the emergence of Islamic fundamentalism and the Islamic State (ISIS).

Book Synopsis Bureaucracy and Political Development. (SPD-2), Volume 2 by : Joseph La Palombara
Download or read book Bureaucracy and Political Development. (SPD-2), Volume 2 written by Joseph La Palombara and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of the public bureaucracy in social, economic, and political development? What are the alternatives of development for newly emerging nation-states? How does a bureaucracy satisfy or inhibit the requisites of democratic development? Twelve outstanding scholars—Joseph LaPalombara, Fritz Morstein Marx, S. N. Eisenstadt, Fred W. Riggs, Bert F. Hoselitz, Joseph J. Spengler, Merle Fainsod, Carl Beck, J. Donald Kingsley, John T. Dorsey, Ralph Braibanti, and Walter B. Sharp—approach these questions both by historical analysis (in the U.S. and in a score of countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa), and by empirical field research (in such varied places as Nigeria, Pakistan, and Viet Nam).
