Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Christian Marriage According to the Teaching and Discipline of the Catholic Church Marriage, as an institution of the law of Nature and of the Christian law, is a subject of the greatest importance, and one that calls for careful and wise explanation in every age. Questions regarding it are beset by many difficulties, as they involve the happiness and well-being of the married couple, of their children, and of the community at large. False teaching and theories concerning it strike at the root of the Christian family, and therefore are calculated to undermine the foundations of society and to destroy private happiness, public peace, and public morality, which depend so much for their maintenance upon marital fidelity and domestic purity. It is for these reasons that the Church of Christ has constantly exercised the authority divinely conferred upon her in providing, by her laws, for the due sanctity and protection of marriage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures Upon the Relations of Civil Law to Church Polity, Discipline, and Property In attempting to exhibit before you some of the organized rules of civil or municipal law, I find myself embarrassed by several considerations. One is found in the fact that abstract legal discussions are proverbially dry and uninteresting to those who have not made the law a subject of considerable investigation. Such persons cannot be expected to discover, at once, how far-reaching a single principle may be, what relation it bears to a system wide enough to embrace all human conduct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Law: With Special Reference to Ecclesiastical Law in the United States The point of contact between the Church and the Law is always kept in View; and matters extraneous to this plan of treatment are omitted, although seem ing at times to belong to the interest awakened. It is believed that this little work will serve as a convenient hand-book to clergymen on a variety of topics, that are certain, from time to time, to engage their attention, and upon which the skill of a lawyer who knows where to find the law is usually appealed to. The well informed layman will also find much to interest him in these pages; and, while the book is intended for the general reader, it may not be found out of place in the library of the lawyer who wishes to be able to refer conveniently to a range of topics, not heretofore included in a single volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Church Law: A Guide and Manual for Rectors, Wardens, and Vestrymen of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America In sending forth the Second Edition of American Church Law I cannot forbear to express my thanks to the many Bishops, Clergy and Laymen of the Church for their kind recognition of this effort to give them an exposition of their legal rights and duties. Since the publication of the First Edition, the Constitution and Canons of the General Convention have undergone a radical revision. Many changes have also been made in the Constitution and Canons of the several Dioceses, and in the Statute Laws affecting the Church, of the various States. The present Edition has been thoroughly revised and corrected to conform to these changes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation of Religion to Civil Government in the United States of America: A State Without a Church, but Not Without a Religion It has seemed to the author, that it would be proper for him to give to his readers, beforehand, what the astromomers would call, his "personal equation," upon the subject he is now undertaking to discuss. He would, therefore, say that, in the study of the early history of our government, his sympathies have been wholly with the distinctive political views of Washington and Hamilton; and not with those of Jefferson and Madison. His highest admiration is given to those who secured the formation and adoption of the Constitution of the United States, - a Federalist measure - which transformed a weak and unstable confederacy of independent States, into a vigorous and indissoluble Union; leaving the several States in their integrity, while constituting the people of all the States, a Nation. But, that being secured, and unalterably established, the author has found himself drifting away from Federalism. By reason of a mental bent, produced by accidental circumstances, or of a mental type, received by inheritance, he will have to be classed with that school in politics which is negative and restrictive in its policy, rather than with one that is positive and aggressive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marriage Legislation in the New Code of Canon Law It comes, too, at an opportune moment. Tragic events of today, the bitter fruit of four centuries of lax thinking among non-catholic schoolmen and proportionately lax living among their disciples, have shown that the ethical order must be refashioned in the ancient Christian pattern if the race of men is to sustain itself even physically, the more so if there is to be real moral advancement. The world will not come back to Christ, nor be made subject to His reign by any influence the world itself may initiate; the impulse must be from without - the force must come from above. The Church of Christ, which is not of this world, must bring from on high the heavenly grace that will heal the nations. Her mis sion is to teach, her remedy for the world's distemper is primarily the imparting of the form of sound words.
