Book Synopsis Ciudadanía y medio ambiente by : Andrew Dobson
Download or read book Ciudadanía y medio ambiente written by Andrew Dobson and published by Editorial Proteus. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Environment and Citizenship in Latin America by : Alex Latta
Download or read book Environment and Citizenship in Latin America written by Alex Latta and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012-07-20 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarship related to environmental questions in Latin America has only recently begun to coalesce around citizenship as both an empirical site of inquiry and an analytical frame of reference. This has led to a series of new insights and perspectives, but few efforts have been made to bring these various approaches into a sustained conversation across different social, temporal and geographic contexts. This volume is the result of a collaborative endeavour to advance debates on environmental citizenship, while simultaneously and systematically addressing broader theoretical and methodological questions related to the particularities of studying environment and citizenship in Latin America. Providing a window onto leading scholarship in the field, the book also sets an ambitious agenda to spark further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In this wide-ranging book, Hannah Reid offers a rich compendium of real life scenarios and brings home the realities of how poor people are suffering from and coping with climate change impacts today. Drawing on case studies gathered by the UP in Smoke group - a powerful coalition of global environment and development organizations including Greenpeace, Oxfam, Practical Action and the WWF - this book provides new models for human development in a climate-change-constrained future as well as positive solutions to tackling climate change at the macro-level with proposals from luminaries such as Professors Wangari Maathai, Manfred Max-Neef and Jayati Ghosh.

Book Synopsis Controversies in Latin American Bioethics by : Eduardo Rivera-López
Download or read book Controversies in Latin American Bioethics written by Eduardo Rivera-López and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-19 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a first rate selection of academic articles on Latin American bioethics. It covers different issues, such as vulnerability, abortion, biomedical research with human subjects, environment, exploitation, commodification, reproductive medicine, among others. Latin American bioethics has been, to an important extent, parochial and unable to meet stringent international standards of rational philosophical discussion. The new generations of bioethicists are changing this situation, and this book demonstrates that change. All articles are written from the perspective of Latin American scholars from several disciplines such as philosophy and law. Working with the tools of analytical philosophy and jurisprudence, this book defends views with rational argument, and opening for pluralistic discussion.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Development Research and Practice in Mexico and Selected Latin American Countries by : Walter Leal Filho
Download or read book Sustainable Development Research and Practice in Mexico and Selected Latin American Countries written by Walter Leal Filho and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an essential overview of sustainable development research in Mexico. It discusses the empirical research methods and findings, as well as practical initiatives and projects being pursued in Mexico and other countries in the region. Although a number of Mexican universities are now conducting high-quality research on matters related to sustainable development, there are few publications that offer a multidisciplinary overview of research efforts for a broader audience. This book addresses that gap in the literature, providing researchers at Mexican universities – including those from other countries working in Mexico – with an opportunity to present their work, i.e. curriculum innovations, empirical work, activities, case studies, and practical projects. As such, it fosters the exchange of information, ideas and experiences, successful initiatives and best practices.
Book Synopsis Narratives and Imaginings of Citizenship in Latin America by : Cristina Rojas
Download or read book Narratives and Imaginings of Citizenship in Latin America written by Cristina Rojas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at how citizenship has been imagined and transformed in Latin America through the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries from different disciplinary perspectives including anthropology, history, urban planning, geography and political studies. It looks beyond citizenship as a formal legal status to explore how ideas about citizenship have shaped political and historical landscapes in different ways through the region. It shows how conceptions of citizenship are intertwined with understandings of natural spaces and environments, how indigenous politics are ‘de-colonizing’ western liberal conceptions of citizenship, and how citizenship is being transformed through local level politics and projects for development. In addition to showcasing some of the novel, emerging forms of citizenship in the region, the book also traces the ways in which historical narratives of citizenship and national belonging persist within present day politics. Collectively, the chapters show that citizenship remains an important entry point for understanding politics, projects of reform, and struggles for transformation in Latin America. This book was published as a special issue of Citizenship Studies.

Book Synopsis Environmental Governance in Latin America by : Fabio De Castro
Download or read book Environmental Governance in Latin America written by Fabio De Castro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC-BY license. The multiple purposes of nature – livelihood for communities, revenues for states, commodities for companies, and biodiversity for conservationists – have turned environmental governance in Latin America into a highly contested arena. In such a resource-rich region, unequal power relations, conflicting priorities, and trade-offs among multiple goals have led to a myriad of contrasting initiatives that are reshaping social relations and rural territories. This edited collection addresses these tensions by unpacking environmental governance as a complex process of formulating and contesting values, procedures and practices shaping the access, control and use of natural resources. Contributors from various fields address the challenges, limitations, and possibilities for a more sustainable, equal, and fair development. In this book, environmental governance is seen as an overarching concept defining the dynamic and multi-layered repertoire of society-nature interactions, where images of nature and discourses on the use of natural resources are mediated by contextual processes at multiple scales.

Book Synopsis From Biocultural Homogenization to Biocultural Conservation by : Ricardo Rozzi
Download or read book From Biocultural Homogenization to Biocultural Conservation written by Ricardo Rozzi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To assess the social processes of globalization that are changing the way in which we co-inhabit the world today, this book invites the reader to essay the diversity of worldviews, with the diversity of ways to sustainably co-inhabit the planet. With a biocultural perspective that highlights planetary ecological and cultural heterogeneity, this book examines three interrelated themes: (1) biocultural homogenization, a global, but little perceived, driver of biological and cultural diversity loss that frequently entail social and environmental injustices; (2) biocultural ethics that considers –ontologically and axiologically– the complex interrelationships between habits, habitats, and co-inhabitants that shape their identity and well-being; (3) biocultural conservation that seeks social and ecological well-being through the conservation of biological and cultural diversity and their interrelationships.
Book Synopsis The Indigenous Right to Self-Determination in Extractivist Economies by : Marcela Torres-Wong
Download or read book The Indigenous Right to Self-Determination in Extractivist Economies written by Marcela Torres-Wong and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International norms widely recognize the Indigenous right to self-determination by which Indigenous peoples define and purse their collective aspirations. Nevertheless, as progressive as legal frameworks might appear, in reality, few Indigenous communities enjoy this right and most remain vulnerable and disempowered. Activists blame Latin America's extractivist economies, while governments argue that extractive revenues are necessary to improve Indigenous life. Far from presenting a unified position, rural Indigenous peoples are most often divided over extractive industries. To assess how Indigenous self-determination has progressed, and the role that extractivism plays in this, this Element examines six Indigenous communities in Mexico, Bolivia, and Peru with contrasting experiences of extractive projects. It finds that the Indigenous ability to use favorable legislation in conjunction with available economic resources shapes different self-determination outcomes. Finally, it assesses Indigenous possibilities for self-determination in the light of environmental activism and discourses on Buen Vivir.
