Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. JENARO TALENS (escritor).

Book excerpt: Between 1750 and 1850 Spanish American politics underwent a dramatic cultural shift as monarchist colonies gave way to independent states based at least nominally on popular sovereignty and republican citizenship. In The Time of Liberty, Peter Guardino explores the participation of subalterns in this grand transformation. He focuses on Mexico, comparing local politics in two parts of Oaxaca: the mestizo, urban Oaxaca City and the rural villages of nearby Villa Alta, where the population was mostly indigenous. Guardino challenges traditional assumptions that poverty and isolation alienated rural peasants from the political process. He shows that peasants and other subalterns were conscious and complex actors in political and ideological struggles and that popular politics played an important role in national politics in the first half of the nineteenth century. Guardino makes extensive use of archival materials, including judicial transcripts and newspaper accounts, to illuminate the dramatic contrasts between the local politics of the city and of the countryside, describing in detail how both sets of citizens spoke and acted politically. He contends that although it was the elites who initiated the national change to republicanism, the transition took root only when engaged by subalterns. He convincingly argues that various aspects of the new political paradigms found adherents among even some of the most isolated segments of society and that any subsequent failure of electoral politics was due to an absence of pluralism rather than a lack of widespread political participation.

Book excerpt: Based on an ethnographic study on the Andean Tri-border (between Chile, Peru, and Bolivia), this volume addresses the experience of Aymara cross-border women from Bolivia employed in the rural valleys on the outskirts of Arica (Chile’s northernmost city). As protagonists of transborder mobility circuits, these women are intersectionally impacted by different forms of social vulnerability. With a feminist anthropological perspective, the book investigates how the boundaries of gender are constructed in the (multi)situated experience of these transborder women. By building a bridge between classical anthropological studies on kinship and contemporary debates on transnational and transborder mobility, the book invites us to rethink structuralist theoretical assertions on the elementary character of family alliances.

Book excerpt: How does an artist respond to the horrors of war and the genocide of his or her people? Can art play a role in the fight for justice? These are key questions for understanding the work of Guatemalan photographer Daniel Hernández-Salazar. Since the 1980s, Hernández-Salazar has created both documentary and aesthetic works that confront the state-sponsored terrorism and mass killings of Guatemala's long civil war (1962-1996). His photographic polyptych (4-panel image) "Clarification" became the icon for the Recovery of Historical Memory project of the Archbishopric of Guatemala, as well as a rallying symbol for Guatemalans. Broadening his crusade for justice in the twenty-first century, Hernández-Salazar is now also using the shouting angel of his polyptych (entitled "So That All Shall Know") to challenge the forgetting and/or erasure of painful history in many parts of the world, including Mexico, Japan, the United States, Canada, and Argentina. So That All Shall Know is a powerful, comprehensive overview of the work of Daniel Hernández-Salazar on recent Guatemalan history. Portfolios of images present his early photojournalistic work documenting the Guatemalan genocide; his Eros + Thanatos series that responds aesthetically to the destruction of war; and his Street Angel project, which uses his image "So That All Shall Know" to protest against injustice and historical forgetting around the world. Accompanying the images are bilingual English-Spanish essays by four scholars who discuss the development of Hernández-Salazar's art in the context of contemporary photography, the social and political conditions that inspire his work, and the broader questions that arise when artists engage in social struggle. Introduced by Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberta Menchú Tum, So That All Shall Know is a moving testament to the horrors of genocide and the power of art to give voice to the silenced and presence to the disappeared.

Book excerpt: "Richly illustrated with works of both high culture and commercial kitsch - many of them never before reproduced - South of the Border revisits an era when Mexico captured the North American imagination." "Between the final years of the Mexican Revolution of 1910-17 and the immediate aftermath of World War II, dozens of U.S. painters and photographers flocked to Mexico, among them Edward Weston, Paul Strand, Marsden Hartley, Helen Levitt, Josef Albers, and Robert Motherwell. South of the Border reconsiders the work of these and other American artists, along with representative works of their Mexican contemporaries and examples of the vast quantities of commercial art - illustrated books and magazines, travel posters and postcards - and Mexican folk and tourist art that contributed to Americans' image of their neighbor to the south." "Artists visiting or living in Mexico, Oles writes, were enthralled with the country's climate, pre-Columbian heritage, and folk culture. Especially during the Great Depression, not only artists but the general American public as well saw in Mexico an appealing alternative to the pressures of industrial society. Some artists, including Winold Reiss, Thomas Handforth, and Doris Rosenthal, won acclaim for their depictions of a seemingly timeless rural life in Mexican villages. Others, among them Pablo O'Higgins, Elizabeth Catlett, and Robert Mallary, fired their work with politics, bringing the movement for social reform directly to the people through large murals and popular graphics." "In a bilingual text - English and Spanish - that accompanies more than 180 illustrations, Oles describes these and many other U.S. artists drawn to Mexico, placing their work in its original political and cultural context. An accompanying essay by Karen Cordero Reiman reexamines the history of Mexican art from 1910 through 1950, providing a fresh interpretation of a period long obscured by nationalist discourse and the domination of muralism." "Published in cooperation with the Yale University Art Gallery, South of the Border includes capsule biographies and selected bibliographies for many of the artists discussed in the text."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
