Book Synopsis A Wolf in the City by : Cinzia Arruzza
Download or read book A Wolf in the City written by Cinzia Arruzza and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of tyranny preoccupied Plato, and its discussion both begins and ends his famous Republic. Though philosophers have mined the Republic for millennia, Cinzia Arruzza is the first to devote a full book to the study of tyranny and of the tyrant's soul in Plato's Republic. In A Wolf in the City, Arruzza argues that Plato's critique of tyranny intervenes in an ancient debate concerning the sources of the crisis of Athenian democracy and the relation between political leaders and demos in the last decades of the fifth century BCE. Arruzza shows that Plato's critique of tyranny should not be taken as veiled criticism of the Syracusan tyrannical regime, but rather of Athenian democracy. In parsing Plato's discussion of the soul of the tyrant, Arruzza will also offer new and innovative insights into his moral psychology, addressing much-debated problems such as the nature of eros and of the spirited part of the soul, the unity or disunity of the soul, and the relation between the non-rational parts of the soul and reason.

Download or read book City Wolves written by Dorris Heffron and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2010-03-02 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving historical tale and remarkable literary achievement, City Wolves is the story of Canada’s first woman veterinarian, Meg Wilkinson. Born in 1870 on a farm near Halifax, Meg’s childhood experience with wolves makes her determined to be a veterinarian. Supported by the seemingly eccentric Randolph Oliphant and inspired by the ancient Inuit who first turned wolves into sled dogs, Meg surpasses the horse doctors at vet college and becomes the notorious ’dog doctor of Halifax’ in the 1890s. After her unusual marriage ends abruptly in Boston, Meg travels to Vancouver and up to the Yukon, seeking the legendary sled dogs. Arriving at the beginning of the Klondike gold rush, she makes her way amidst Mounties, dance hall girls, Klondike Kings, mushers, priests and swindlers...all the mangy and magnificent people, dogs and spirits that populated raucous Dawson City. Observed through the restless spirit of Inuit Ike, this is lively, insightful, historical fiction, subtly revealing the wolf-like nature of humans and the human nature of wolves. Both earthy and reflective, City Wolves is an important story told with compassion, humour and unflinching realism. In this her fifth novel, Dorris Heffron has created a wide range of unforgettable characters and achieved a breadth of vision exploring the deep conflicts and interconnection of social beings in a way that is uniquely Canadian and profoundly universal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: City Wolf Zandrea, Nita and Stacy are three girlfriends who are only interested in what club to pop into on Friday and Saturday nights. Zandrea's life is turned upside down when, on break from her shift at the hospital cafeteria, she meets a sexy man with a serious injury in the emergency room. Nita and Stacy refuse to believe the man who Zandrea says disappeared from the hospital is the same guy they meet later at the club. But who cares. He's hot and he's set his sights on Zandrea. Nothing else matters...until Zandrea finds out what he really is. City Wolf 2 Nita is jealous of her friend Zandrea when she finds a man that is everything she could ever hope for, and nothing would make Nita happier than if she were to find someone of her own. When not one but two men begin to pursue her, she doesn't know what to do. The less intimidating of the two, the younger, mysterious man, Deandre, might be the better choice. But Lucas will not take no for an answer when he spots the woman he wants in his bed. Despite being warned by her friends that Lucas is not what he seems and is too much for a gentle woman like Nita, she can't seem to stay away from him. Still, Deandre has plans for the sweet Nita, and he will do whatever is necessary to make her give him what he wants. City Wolf 3 Stacy’s girlfriends lucked out finding a man, and when Stacy learns that they are wolf shape-shifters, she’s even more impressed. She wants one of her own, and decides to shop around among Brant and Lucas’ wolf buddies. Every last one of them is hot as hell, especially Nash. Being the bold thing that she is, Stacy makes a move on Nash, but is floored when he tells her she should stick to human men. Humiliated, hurt, and pissed off, Stacy turns to a new wolf shifter from out of town. Alphons is dangerous, wild, and sexy. Stacy is a little put off about him challenging Nash for the Alpha position, but what happens after the fight is even more shocking. Nash didn’t want to have anything to do with a human woman, least of all one of Zandrea’s friends. He was happy for his brothers, but that route wasn’t for him, especially if he wanted to remain leader of his pack. After one kiss, Nash can’t get Stacy out of his mind, and yet, he wonders if he can trust her motives since she’s still too close with his rival, Alphons.

Book Synopsis I Speak of the City by : Stephen Wolf
Download or read book I Speak of the City written by Stephen Wolf and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Speak of the City is the most extensive collection of poems ever assembled about New York. Beginning with an early piece by Jacob Steendam (from when the city was called New Amsterdam) and continuing through poems written in the aftermath of 9/11, this anthology features voices from more than a dozen countries. It includes two Nobel Prize recipients, fifteen Pulitzer Prize winners, and many other recognizable names, but it also preserves the work of long-neglected poets who celebrate the wild possibilities and colossal achievements of this epic city. Poets capture New York's major moments and transformations, writing of Hudson's arrival, Stuyvesant's prejudice, and the city's astonishing growth and gentrification. They speak of the thrills of a skyscraper's observation deck and the privations of teeming tenements. They portray the immigrant experience at Ellis Island and the decay, fear, and unexpected kindness on a subway ride. They take place on sidewalks, bridges, and docks; in taxis, buses, and ferries; and even within nature. The Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, Broadway, the Statue of Liberty, and other familiar landmarks are recast through the prism of individual experience yet still reflect the seeming invincibility of New York and its status as a cultural magnet for the freethinking and experimental. While certain subjects and themes can be found in all urban verse, poems about New York have their own restless rhythm and ever-changing style, much like the city itself. Whether writing sonnets, epics, or experimental or imagistic verse, each of these poets has been inspired by the marvels and madness, humor and heartbreak of an enduring city.

Book Synopsis The Renaissance Cities by : Norbert Wolf
Download or read book The Renaissance Cities written by Norbert Wolf and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A luxurious and definitive exploration of how and why the Renaissance flourished in Italy for two centuries. The idea of “renaissance,” or rebirth, arose in Italy as a way of reviving the art, science, and scholarship of the Classical era. It was also powered by a quest to document artistic “reality” according to newly discovered scientific and mathematical principles. By the late 15th century, Italy had become the recognized European leader in the fields of painting, architecture, and sculpture. But why was Florence the center of this burgeoning creativity, and how did it spread to other Italian cities? Brimming with vivid reproductions of works by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, and others, this book showcases the creative achievements that traveled from Florence to Rome to Venice. Art historian Norbert Wolf explores the influence of secular and religious patronage on artistic development; how the urban structure and way of life allowed for such a rich exchange of ideas; and how ideas of humanism informed artists reaching toward the future while clinging to the ideals of the past. Insightful, accessible, and fascinating, this thoroughly researched book highlights the connections and mutual influences of Florence, Rome, and Venice as well as their intriguing rivalries and interdependencies.
