Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates the pivotal role played by state confines in the geography of Balkan countries through powerful GIS and remote sensing analyses. It provides unique mapping perspectives on the Balkan region, with over 140 illustrations. The book is dedicated to applied, historical and economic geographers, as well as political scientists.Because of its high fragmentation, the Balkan area has not been studied on a systematic transnational basis. The persistence of frozen and/or open conflicts has also turned the border issue into an absolute taboo subject for the scientific community and civil society. This results in an apparent “chaos” that most Western observers fail to understand.

Book Synopsis Bulgarian Geopolitics in a Balkan Context by : Valentin Mihaylov
Download or read book Bulgarian Geopolitics in a Balkan Context written by Valentin Mihaylov and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the geographic space as an inseparable component of a nation’s historical memory, territorial awareness, geopolitical visions, and obsessions. The empirical part of the book focuses on the critical analysis of first-hand sources containing representations of the imagined spaces and places of Bulgaria and Bulgarians from a long-term perspective. The research results are structured in accordance with the author’s model of an imagined national space. It contains three general domains: possessed national space, the ethnogeopolitical neighbourhood, and ancient and legendary spaces. The book also explores how Bulgarians’ historical and ethnic spaces are linked with specific geopolitics, such as passive internal geopolitics, soft revisionism, non-intervening geopolitical claims, blocking international integration as a disguised form of old territorial claims, and emerging historical geopolitics. It examines how the imagined national space is approached by statesmen, politicians, academics, and other creators of ‘high’ geopolitics. The book also pays attention to the role of spatial imaginations in growing ‘low’ (popular) geopolitics, which includes media, popular culture, and national mythology. Written in an interdisciplinary manner, this timely book will attract the interest of scholars and students in geopolitics, human geography, international relations, nationalism studies, and ethnic history.

Book Synopsis Green Barons, Force-of-Circumstance Entrepreneurs, Impotent Mayors by : Nigel Swain
Download or read book Green Barons, Force-of-Circumstance Entrepreneurs, Impotent Mayors written by Nigel Swain and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exemplary study in comparative contemporary history, this monograph looks at rural change in six countries: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. In the 1990s most of these nations experienced a fourth radical restructuring of agricultural relations in the twentieth century, and all went through the dramatic transition from communism to capitalism. The author analyzes attempts to activate democracy on a local level and recreate farming structures and non-agricultural businesses based on private ownership and private enterprise. He describes the emergence of a new business class that seeks to dominate local government structures; the recuperation of former communist farming entities by former managers; and the transformation of peasants into rural citizens, who nevertheless remain the underdogs. Swain exposes common features as well as specific divergences between the six countries; he portrays the winners, losers and engineers of transformations. He situates his themes in a wider context that will appeal to a broad range of social scientists and historians.
