Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorics on Words: Progress and Perspectives covers the proceedings of an international meeting by the same title, held at the University of Waterloo, Canada on August 16-22, 1982. This meeting highlights the diverse aspects of combinatorics on words, including the Thue systems, topological dynamics, combinatorial group theory, combinatorics, number theory, and computer science. This book is organized into four parts encompassing 19 chapters. The first part describes the Thue systems with the Church-Rosser property. A Thue system will be called "Church-Rosser if two strings are congruent with respect to that system if and only if they have a common descendant, that is, a string that can be obtained applying only rewriting rules that reduce length. The next part deals with the problems related to the encoding of codes and the overlapping of words in rational languages. This part also explores the features of polynomially bounded DOL systems yield codes. These topics are followed by discussions of some combinatorial properties of metrics over the free monoid and the burnside problem of semigroups of matrices. The last part considers the ambiguity types of formal grammars, finite languages, computational complexity of algebraic structures, and the Bracket-context tree functions. This book will be of value to mathematicians and advance undergraduate and graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the political and fiscal origins of the French Revolution by looking at the relationship between the royal government and privileged, corporate bodies at local level. Utilizing a neo-Tocquevillian approach, it argues that the monarchy undermined its own attempts at reform by extending central authority, while at the same time it continued to rely upon corporate structures and monopolies to finance the state. The unresolvable, institutional conflicts had the effect of politicising members of the privileged elite and eventually led many of them to embrace a rhetoric of citizenship, accountability, and civic equality that had far-reaching and unanticipated consequences. When Lille's bourgeoisie consolidated a municipal revolution in 1789, they followed a programme that was politically liberal, but economically conservative. Arranged as a series of case-studies, the book illuminates the structure of political power in the Flemish provincial estates, the growth of royal taxation, the problem of municipal credit, the role of venal officeholders, and the relationship of the revolutionary bourgeoisie to monopolies of the guilds.

Book Synopsis Reconceptualizing the Industrial Revolution by : Jeff Horn
Download or read book Reconceptualizing the Industrial Revolution written by Jeff Horn and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2010-10-29 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Closely linked essays examine distinctive national patterns of industrialization. This collection of essays offers new perspectives on the Industrial Revolution as a global phenomenon. The fifteen contributors go beyond the longstanding view of industrialization as a linear process marked by discrete stages. Instead, they examine a lengthy and creative period in the history of industrialization, 1750 to 1914, reassessing the nature of and explanations for England's industrial primacy, and comparing significant industrial developments in countries ranging from China to Brazil. Each chapter explores a distinctive national production ecology, a complex blend of natural resources, demographic pressures, cultural impulses, technological assets, and commercial practices. At the same time, the chapters also reveal the portability of skilled workers and the permeability of political borders. The Industrial Revolution comes to life in discussions of British eagerness for stylish, middle-class products; the Enlightenment's contribution to European industrial growth; early America's incremental (rather than revolutionary) industrialization; the complex connections between Czarist and Stalinist periods of industrial change in Russia; Japan's late and rapid turn to mechanized production; and Brazil's industrial-financial boom. By exploring unique national patterns of industrialization as well as reciprocal exchanges and furtive borrowing among these states, the book refreshes the discussion of early industrial transformations and raises issues still relevant in today's era of globalization.
