Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical circuit theory is a mathematical theory of linear, passive circuits, namely, circuits composed of resistors, capacitors and inductors. Like many a thing classical, it is old and enduring, structured and precise, simple and elegant. It is simple in that everything in it can be deduced from ?rst principles based on a few physical laws. It is enduring in that the things we can say about linear, passive circuits are universally true, unchanging. No matter how complex a circuit may be, as long as it consists of these three kinds of elements, its behavior must be as prescribed by the theory. The theory tells us what circuits can and cannot do. As expected of any good theory, classical circuit theory is also useful. Its ulti mate application is circuit design. The theory leads us to a design methodology that is systematic and precise. It is based on just two fundamental theorems: that the impedance function of a linear, passive circuit is a positive real function, and that the transfer function is a bounded real function, of a complex variable.

Book excerpt: This book describes the development of the power matching problem. It starts with the derivative-free proof of conjugate matching, goes through the nonlinear, resistive maximum power theorem and its reversal, extension of the concept of equivalence in the case of nonlinear circuits, application of the nonlinear, and resistive maximum power theorem for diode measurement. The author treats practically important special cases of nonlinear, dynamic power matching with applications, and the most general solution that is not realizable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique first-of-its-kind resource provides practical coverage of the design and implementation of frequency measurement receivers, which aid in identifying unknown signals. The technologies used in frequency measurement interferometry-based on-delay lines and filters are explored in this book. Practitioners also find concrete examples of microwave photonics implementations. The designs and concepts that cover conventional photonic instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) circuits are explained. This book provides details on new designs for microwave photonic circuits and reconfigurable frequency measurement (RFM) circuits using diodes and MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS). This book explains the many diverse applications of frequency measurement that are used in defense, radar, and communications. The instrumentation used to perform frequency measurements is explained, including the use of block analysis for network and spectrum analyzers and calibration techniques. Readers learn the advantages of using frequency measurement based on microwave/RF techniques, including immunity to electromagnetic interference, low loss, compatibility with fiber signal distribution, and parallel processing signals. Moreover, readers gain insight into the future of frequency measurement receivers. The book examines both the underpinnings and the implementation of frequency measurement receivers using many diverse technological platforms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces the consolidation of a specialty, as the various feedback control devices used in the 1930s for aircraft and ships, the telephone system, and analogue computers, were brought together during World War II to form what is now known as the classical frequency response methods of analysis and design, and applied to non-linear, sampled-data, and stochastic systems. Follows the field's development through the post-war addition of the root locus method to the introduction of the state-space methods of modern control. Distributed by INSPEC. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuum mechanics deals with the stress, deformation, and mechanical behaviour of matter as a continuum rather than a collection of discrete particles. The subject is interdisciplinary in nature, and has gained increased attention in recent times primarily because of a need to understand a variety of phenomena at different spatial scales. The second edition of Principles of Continuum Mechanics provides a concise yet rigorous treatment of the subject of continuum mechanics and elasticity at the senior undergraduate and first-year graduate levels. It prepares engineer-scientists for advanced courses in traditional as well as emerging fields such as biotechnology, nanotechnology, energy systems, and computational mechanics. The large number of examples and exercise problems contained in the book systematically advance the understanding of vector and tensor analysis, basic kinematics, balance laws, field equations, constitutive equations, and applications. A solutions manual is available for the book.

Book excerpt: The Standard Handbook of Electronics Engineering has defined its field for over thirty years. Spun off in the 1960’s from Fink’s Standard Handbook of Electrical Engineering, the Christiansen book has seen its markets grow rapidly, as electronic engineering and microelectronics became the growth engine of digital computing. The EE market has now undergone another seismic shift—away from computing and into communications and media. The Handbook will retain much of its evergreen basic material, but the key applications sections will now focus upon communications, networked media, and medicine—the eventual destination of the majority of graduating EEs these days.

Book excerpt: "Circuit theory is one of the most important tools of the electrical engineer, and it can be derived with suitable approximations from Maxwell's equations. Despite this, university courses treat electromagnetism and circuit theory as two separate subjects and at advanced level, students can lack a basic understanding of the classical electromagnetism applied in the context of electric circuits to fully appreciate and apply circuit theory and understand its limitations. Here the authors build on their graduate teaching experiences and lectures to treat these topics as a single subject and derive and present the important results from circuit analyses, such as Kirchhoff's laws and Ohm's law, using the ideas of the classical electromagnetism."--Prové de l'editor.
