Book Synopsis Le Corbusier. Le Couvent Sainte Marie de La Tourette / The Monastery of Sainte Marie de La Tourette by : Philippe Potié
Download or read book Le Corbusier. Le Couvent Sainte Marie de La Tourette / The Monastery of Sainte Marie de La Tourette written by Philippe Potié and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: in 1952 Le Corbusier was commissioned "to dwell in the silence of men of prayer and study and to construct a church for them". The result was his impressive Convent of La Tourette, marking a significant step in modern religious architecture. Beginning with the rectangular form common to the Cirstercian monastic tradition, he created a building whose stark form contrasts beautifully with the organic elements of the interior court and the grasslands surrounding it. The church itself is a model of simplicity, the cement has been left rough and the well located sources of light evoke a feeling of silence and reflection. The order s precept of prayer, study and reflection is aptly mirrored in the architecture. Like the other Le Corbusier Guides published by Birkhäuser, this volume provides a wealth of plans, details, photographs and information on this building which today is also a conference centre.

Book Synopsis Concrete and Culture by : Adrian Forty
Download or read book Concrete and Culture written by Adrian Forty and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete has been used in arches, vaults, and domes dating as far back as the Roman Empire. Today, it is everywhere—in our roads, bridges, sidewalks, walls, and architecture. For each person on the planet, nearly three tons of concrete are produced every year. Used almost universally in modern construction, concrete has become a polarizing material that provokes intense loathing in some and fervent passion in others. Focusing on concrete’s effects on culture rather than its technical properties, Concrete and Culture examines the ways concrete has changed our understanding of nature, of time, and even of material. Adrian Forty concentrates not only on architects’ responses to concrete, but also takes into account the role concrete has played in politics, literature, cinema, labor-relations, and arguments about sustainability. Covering Europe, North and South America, and the Far East, Forty examines the degree that concrete has been responsible for modernist uniformity and the debates engendered by it. The first book to reflect on the global consequences of concrete, Concrete and Culture offers a new way to look at our environment over the past century.

Download or read book France written by Jean-Louis Cohen and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and the chateaux of the Loire Valley, but French architects have also produced some of the most iconic buildings of the twentieth century, playing a central role in the emergence and development of modernism. In France, Jean-Louis Cohen presents a complete narrative of the unfolding architectural modernity in the country, grappling not only with the buildings but also with the political and critical context surrounding them. Cohen examines the developments in urban design and architecture within France, depicting the continuities and breaks in French architecture since 1900 against a broader international background. Describing the systems of architectural exchange with other countries—including Italy, Germany, Russia, and the United States—he offers a new view on the ideas, projects, and buildings otherwise so often considered only from narrow nationalistic perspectives. Cohen also maps the problematic search for a national identity against the background of European rivalries and France’s colonial past. Drawing on a wealth of recent research, this authoritatively written book will challenge the way design professionals and historians view modern French architecture.
Book Synopsis Architects and Engineers by : Roland May
Download or read book Architects and Engineers written by Roland May and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first decades of the 20th century, civil engineers were widely seen as a role model for future architects. Their role within the contemporary architecture movements, however, was hardly discussed. To this day, even fundamental questions about collaborations, rivalries, or conflicts between the two sister disciplines still await answers. This volume brings together contributions by international scholars on the cooperation between architects and civil engineers in various countries in the interwar period. By offering both insights into national peculiarities and new reflections on the general nature, character, and significance of such joint efforts, it opens exciting new perspectives on the modern building culture of Europe and beyond.

Download or read book Concrete written by Peter Collins and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004-05-10 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword by Kenneth Frampton: "Concrete remains a valuable historical text that in many respects has never been given its due. It is an unmatched pioneering history of the development of reinforced concrete up to 1914. It records and analyses the densely articulated, if provincial, English debate with respect to the aesthetic challenge posed by the increasing popularity of concrete from around 1870 onwards. Finally, until very recently it was the only readily available monograph on Auguste Perret in English. In this regard it is particularly valuable as a thorough and perceptive assessment of Perret's life and career, one that still stands as a point of departure for all current attempts to situate this seminal architect within the wider trajectory of twentieth-century culture."
