La investigación parte de dos hipótesis principales: la primera es la validez del cine de ficción como recurso de aprendizaje histórico y sociológico y la verificación de la relación construida entre historia y cine de ficción; la segunda está relacionada con la aplicabilidad de esa conexión en la década de los sesenta, atendiendo a los cambios sociales y a la producción cinematográfica del New Hollywood, un movimiento del cine norteamericano que coincide con un momento especialmente convulso desde los puntos de vista cultural y político. Para ello lleva a cabo un estudio crítico de las principales teorías sobre la relación cine-historia, estudiando el estado de la cuestión para alcanzar una posición sobre su validez actual. Desde este punto de vista alcanza dos conceptos esenciales para el análisis narrativo posterior: la historia de las mentalidades (una teoría basada en que las creencias, los pensamientos y las creaciones del hombre son también historia y merecen ser estudiados y analizados como la historia de la cultura material o intrahistoria: aquellos sucesos cotidianos que forman la cultura de un pueblo y que sirven de contrapunto a la historiografía oficial) y la existencia de un cine de raigambre nacional, que asume que las motivaciones para hacer cine han surgido en general en paralelo a las construcciones de la identidad ideológica de cada país. Posteriormente, la investigación aplica el estudio de las relaciones entre cine e historia al caso concreto del cine norteamericano de la década de los sesenta. Para ello realiza en primer lugar una panorámica de la situación socio-política de EE.UU y su sistema cinematográfico, que dieron origen a la generación denominada New Hollywood, haciendo especial hincapié en la formación del fenómeno de la contracultura. Terminado este análisis, el autor realiza un estudio de una muestra representativa de cinco películas del fenómeno estudiado. Para ello, la investigación desarrolla dos procesos complementarios desde un punto de vista metodológico: en lo correspondiente al estado de la cuestión de las relaciones cine-historia y a la situación socio-política y del sistema cinematográfico de la época, hace uso de una perspectiva analítica. Por otro lado, en el estudio de la muestra de películas representativas del periodo incorpora una perspectiva comparativa, a través del análisis no solo de las fuentes primarias sino de su relación con otros films de la época. Con todo ello, el autor verifica las dos hipótesis planteadas en el inicio de la investigación: la validez del cine de ficción como recurso de aprendizaje histórico y sociológico y la aplicabilidad de dichas teorías en este periodo de la cinematografía estadounidense. De esta manera el autor prueba la suficiencia de las películas como documentos históricos y sociológicos de primer orden y reflexiona acerca de su valor intrínseco como material de calidad en el trabajo de un historiador, centrándose en dos aspectos: el reflejo de la identidad colectiva en las películas y su capacidad para reproducir los elementos de la cultura. Por otra parte, la investigación alcanza desde la perspectiva del clima social el concepto del cine como contra-análisis de la historia oficial y hace un paralelismo, a través de diferentes variables demostradas a lo largo de la investigación, de la cinematografía y la historia de la época, demostrándose que las películas analizadas cumplen la doble misión de mostrar la historia de las mentalidades y otorgar, tomadas como conjunto, una referencia fiable de lo que supusieron los cambios sociales en la época y de la profundidad que alcanzó el cuestionamiento de los pilares de la ideología estadounidense a todos los niveles.

Many Cine de Oro (Golden Age cinema) films adhered to the dominant Hollywood model, but a small yet formidable filmmaking faction rejected Hollywood’s paradigm outright. Directors Fernando de Fuentes, Emilio Fernández, Luis Buñuel, Juan Bustillo Oro, Adolfo Best Maugard, and Julio Bracho sought to create a unique national cinema that, through the stories it told and the ways it told them, was wholly Mexican. The Classical Mexican Cinema traces the emergence and evolution of this Mexican cinematic aesthetic, a distinctive film form designed to express lo mexicano. Charles Ramírez Berg begins by locating the classical style’s pre-cinematic roots in the work of popular Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada at the turn of the twentieth century. He also looks at the dawning of Mexican classicism in the poetics of Enrique Rosas’ El Automóvil Gris, the crowning achievement of Mexico’s silent filmmaking era and the film that set the stage for the Golden Age films. Berg then analyzes mature examples of classical Mexican filmmaking by the predominant Golden Age auteurs of three successive decades. In this book, author Jacqueline Avila looks at examples from all genres, exploring the ways that the popular, regional, and orchestral music in these films contributed to the creation of tropes and archetypes now central to Mexican cultural nationalism. Integrating primary source material--including newspaper articles, advertisements, films--with film music studies, sound studies, and Mexican film and cultural history, Avila examines how these tropes and archetypes mirrored changing perceptions of mexicanidad manufactured by the State and popular and transnational culture. As she shows, several social and political agencies were heavily invested in creating a unified national identity in an attempt to merge the previously fragmented populace as a result of the Revolution. The commercial medium of film became an important tool to acquaint a diverse urban audience with the nuances of Mexican national identity, and music played an essential and persuasive role in the process. In this heterogeneous environment, cinema and its music continuously reshaped the contested, fluctuating space of Mexican identity, functioning both as a sign and symptom of social and political change.

Book excerpt: After the modern Mexican state came into being following the Revolution of 1910, hyper-masculine machismo came to be a defining characteristic of "mexicanidad," or Mexican national identity. Virile men (pelados and charros), virtuous prostitutes as mother figures, and minstrel-like gay men were held out as desired and/or abject models not only in governmental rhetoric and propaganda, but also in literature and popular culture, particularly in the cinema. Indeed, cinema provided an especially effective staging ground for the construction of a gendered and sexualized national identity. In this book, Sergio de la Mora offers the first extended analysis of how Mexican cinema has represented masculinities and sexualities and their relationship to national identity from 1950 to 2004. He focuses on three traditional genres (the revolutionary melodrama, the cabaretera [dancehall] prostitution melodrama, and the musical comedy "buddy movie") and one subgenre (the fichera brothel-cabaret comedy) of classic and contemporary cinema. By concentrating on the changing conventions of these genres, de la Mora reveals how Mexican films have both supported and subverted traditional heterosexual norms of Mexican national identity. In particular, his analyses of Mexican cinematic icons Pedro Infante and Gael García Bernal and of Arturo Ripstein's cult film El lugar sin límites illuminate cinema's role in fostering distinct figurations of masculinity, queer spectatorship, and gay male representations.
