Download or read book I Will Survive written by Gloria Gaynor and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Will Survive is the story of Gloria Gaynor, America's "Queen of Disco." It is the story of riches and fame, despair, and finally salvation. Her meteoric rise to stardom in the mid-1970s was nothing short of phenomenal, and hits poured forth that pushed her to the top of the charts, including "Honey Bee," "I Got You Under My Skin," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and the song that has immortalized her, "I Will Survive," which became a #1 international gold seller. With that song, Gloria heralded the international rise of disco that became synonymous with a way of life in the fast lane - the sweaty bodies at Studio 54, the lines of cocaine, the indescribable feeling that you could always be at the top of your game and never come down. But down she came after her early stardom, and problems followed in the wake, including the death of her mother, whose love had anchored the young singer, as well as constant battles with weight, drugs, and alcohol. While her fans always imagined her to be rich, her personal finances collapsed due to poor management; and while many envied her, she felt completely empty inside. In the early 1980s, sustained by her marriage to music publisher Linwood Simon, Gloria took three years off and reflected upon her life. She visited churches and revisited her mother's old Bible. Discovering the world of gospel, she made a commitment to Christ that sustains her to this day.
Book Synopsis State of Resistance by : Manuel Pastor
Download or read book State of Resistance written by Manuel Pastor and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Concise, clear and convincing. . . a vision for the country as a whole.” —James Fallows, The New York Times Book Review A leading sociologist's brilliant and revelatory argument that the future of politics, work, immigration, and more may be found in California Once upon a time, any mention of California triggered unpleasant reminders of Ronald Reagan and right-wing tax revolts, ballot propositions targeting undocumented immigrants, and racist policing that sparked two of the nation's most devastating riots. In fact, California confronted many of the challenges the rest of the country faces now—decades before the rest of us. Today, California is leading the way on addressing climate change, low-wage work, immigrant integration, overincarceration, and more. As white residents became a minority and job loss drove economic uncertainty, California had its own Trump moment twenty-five years ago, but has become increasingly blue over each of the last seven presidential elections. How did the Golden State manage to emerge from its unsavory past to become a bellwether for the rest of the country? Thirty years after Mike Davis's hellish depiction of California in City of Quartz, the award-winning sociologist Manuel Pastor guides us through a new and improved California, complete with lessons that the nation should heed. Inspiring and expertly researched, State of Resistance makes the case for honestly engaging racial anxiety in order to address our true economic and generational challenges, a renewed commitment to public investments, the cultivation of social movements and community organizing, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller with more than 1 million copies sold worldwide | Now a Hulu limited series starring Joey King and Logan Lerman Inspired by the incredible true story of one Jewish family separated at the start of World War II, determined to survive—and to reunite—We Were the Lucky Ones is a tribute to the triumph of hope and love against all odds. “Love in the face of global adversity? It couldn't be more timely.” —Glamour It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety. As one sibling is forced into exile, another attempts to flee the continent, while others struggle to escape certain death, either by working grueling hours on empty stomachs in the factories of the ghetto or by hiding as gentiles in plain sight. Driven by an unwavering will to survive and by the fear that they may never see one another again, the Kurcs must rely on hope, ingenuity, and inner strength to persevere. An extraordinary, propulsive novel, We Were the Lucky Ones demonstrates how in the face of the twentieth century’s darkest moment, the human spirit can endure and even thrive.

Saul, an emotionally withdrawn scientist, escapes into New Age mysticism with Shivaya, a self-styled clairvoyant Danish healer. Gerda drifts in and out of psychiatric care as her loosening grip on reality leaves its mark on their teenage daughter, Hannah. In this unflinching portrait of a woman's downward spiral into the nightmare of modern domesticity, Maria Espinosa weaves a deceptively simple tale about the terror of abandonment and the mysterious nature of suffering.

Download or read book Cliff Jump written by Brandice Daniel and published by Mynd Matters Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cliff Jumping is my passion because without the jumps, my life would look totally different. I wouldn't have a successful company, live in New York, be featured on the Drew Barrymore show, have a deal with Nike, or living out my dream. My life would be full of regrets, what ifs, and a nagging feeling that there was better for me. I can easily recall having a college degree and working part-time in the local mall in Memphis, TN and working for a temp service filing papers! I knew there was more for me, but my life kind of putted along until I started to cliff jump. My first major jump was deciding to move from Memphis to New York without having the path totally figured out. Then, it was deciding to do a big event in Harlem knowing I did not have the experience people thought I needed to pull it off. From there, the cliff jumps started to snowball. It included putting down a deposit on an $85,000 venue but not knowing where the rest of the money would come from. That move resulted in my first sponsorship from Target. A cliff jump landed me in Portland, OR sitting in a board room full of Nike executives sharing my story and launching a collaboration on a sneaker for LeBron James. I could not have imagined owning a multi-million dollar company that has partnerships with major corporations. If I had played it safe and followed the status quo, my life would be quite different. My faith plays a major part in cliff jumping, so before you dive in, know that cliff jumping is taking a step of faith. To understand cliff jumping, you must know what it is not. Cliff jumping is NOT: - Moving without a plan - Acting on impulse - Putting your family and kids in harm's way - Taking an action without calculating the cost - Jumping without the work ethic to see it through I believe in planning and creating clear goals. Cliff jumping without either will leave you under the covers in tears. Trust me, I know. I've tried it several times and it's not fun. We will plan, but we will jump! Are you ready?
