Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarises the activities of the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation in its mission to meet the needs and aspirations of its owners and constituents, the Mirarr people. Mirarr is the name of an Aboriginal clan whose traditional estate is located in the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory in Australia. Uranium mining has operated on Mirarr land for more than 25 years. Mirarr opposed the establishment of uranium mining on their lands, and continue to oppose further development of both the Ranger and Jabiluka uranium mines. Mirarr established Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation, an incorporated body, to assist them to manage a balance between sustainable development and traditional practice on their land, and to direct income from mining royalties towards the establishment and maintenance of outstation infrastructure and essential services. The most serious concern of Mirarr is the destruction of country and the decline of traditional culture which will result from continued mining on Mirarr land. Mirarr country encompasses the Ranger and Jabiluka Mineral Leases, the mining town of Jabiru and parts of Kakadu National Park. This is confirmed by Bininj (Aboriginal) law and by balanda (non-Aboriginal) law under the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act 1976.

Download or read book Critical Analysis of World Uranium Resources written by Susan Hall and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Information Administration (EIA) joined with the U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to analyze the world uranium supply and demand balance. To evaluate short- term primary supply (0-15 years), the analysis focused on Reasonably Assured Resources (RAR), which are resources pro- jected with a high degree of geologic assurance and considered to be economically feasible to mine. Such resources include uranium resources from mines currently in production as well as resources that are in the stages of feasibility or of being permit- ted. Sources of secondary supply for uranium, such as stockpiles and reprocessed fuel, were also examined. To evaluate long- term primary supply, estimates of uranium from unconventional and from undiscovered resources were analyzed.

Book Synopsis Uranium in the Aquatic Environment by : Broder Merkel
Download or read book Uranium in the Aquatic Environment written by Broder Merkel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface Uranium is a radioactive element and a heavy metal which is naturally occurring in ground and surface water. Although uranium is enriched in granites and gneiss ground water from these host rocks often shows low to intermediate uranium con centrations, while some ground waters from sandstone and carbonate aquifers show elevated uranium concentrations up to several hundred mg/1 without man made impact. On the other side, surface water contains increased anthropogenic uranium concentrations due to the intensive use of phosphate fertilizers and in mining areas due to mining and milling activities. Saxony and Thuringia both be ing states of the reunified Germany are probably an area where uranium mining activities have impacted the environment more severely than in any other part of the world. Thus, the federal government of Germany allocated huge amounts of money for the rehabilitation work, a unique proceeding without precedent in min ing history. In October 1995 the first international conference on Uranium Mining and Hydrogeology (UMM I) was held in Freiberg being organized by the Department of Geology at the technical University Freiberg by the support of the Saxon State Ministry of Geology and Environment. Due to the large scientific interest in the topic ofuranium a second conference (UMH II) took place in Freiberg in Septem ber 1998.

Book Synopsis Nuclear Wastelands by : International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War
Download or read book Nuclear Wastelands written by International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A handbook for scholars, students, policy makers, journalists, and peace and environmental activists.A handbook for scholars, students, policy makers, journalists, and peace and environmental activists, Nuclear Wastelands provides concise histories of the development of nuclear weapons programs of every declared and de facto nuclear weapons power, as well as detailed surveys of the health and environmental effects of this development both in these countries and in non-nuclear nations involved in nuclear weapons testing and uranium mining. Among the more obvious but largely deferred costs of the Cold War are those related to the management of radioactive waste. The world is burdened with thousands of unwanted nuclear devices and mounting surpluses of weapons-grade plutonium and enriched uranium. In addition, the process of weapons production and testing has left many lands, aquifers, rivers, lakes, and seas contaminated by a multitude of weapons-related poisons. This book follows the production process step by step and country by country from uranium mining to the final assembly and storage of weapons, analyzing the potential hazards of each step and compiling the most complete information available on the actual health and environmental effects, in each country involved. Nuclear Wastelands includes a wealth of information that has only recently come to light, particularly on the nuclear weapons program of the former Soviet Union. It also features critical analyses of official public communications concerning the health and environmental consequences of nuclear weapons production, bringing to light governmental secrecy and outright deception that have led to the subversion of democratic principles, and have camouflaged the damage done to the very people and lands the weapons were meant to safeguard.
