Vimos na leitura a possibilidade de oferecer as ciências sociais às crianças elaborando histórias infantis sobre conceitos dessa disciplina. Percebemos que esse caminho que leva as ciências sociais ao ensino infantil e fundamental é possível. Podemos assim dizer que esse é um embrião a ser desenvolvido e pensado dentro do ambiente escolar.

Book excerpt: Este estudo tem dois objetivos centrais: contribuir para a reflexão teórica das Ciências Sociais (CS) sobre a infância pobre no Brasil (especificamente sobre as chamadas crianças "de rua") e para a discussão contemporânea sobre a denominada "crise social" da infância. A literatura das CS sobre as "crianças de rua", a "história social da infância e/ou das crianças" no Brasil e as relações entre estas e a Sociologia da Infância (SI), assim como suas relações com a teoria social clássica e contemporânea, são a arena privilegiada deste empreendimento. O processo moderno de construção da infância e o processo de sua desconstrução/reconstrução contemporânea no quadro da SI são o pano de fundo contra o qual se constrói a hipótese central: não somente a "infância", mas também o conceito de "criança" em sua forma moderna não está disponível a todas as crianças no Brasil. A "não criança" é aquela que não tem socialmente reconhecida sua condição infantil e, portanto, não tem reconhecidos no plano empírico (embora os tenha no plano jurídico) as prerrogativas e direitos contemporâneos amplamente associados à infância. Aqui se propõe o reconhecimento da produção da "não-criança" como conseqüência da produção/reprodução, na sociedade brasileira, da norma moderna da infância no quadro amplo de seu processo de hegemonização ocidental. Trata-se de revelar o desentranhamento de determinados indivíduos do domínio de uma representação genérica - "infância"--À qual atrelam-se expectativas de um certo comportamento e pertencimento social e institucional (a família, a escola). Busca-se problematizar determinadas categorias que se entrelaçam no debate e que têm sido pouco questionadas nos estudos: as idéias de "infância", "criança" e a de "rua". Dentre as principais proposições, destaca-se ainda, a radicalização da infância contemporânea pela radicalização do princípio de individualização das crianças no atual contexto das profundas transformações que atingem as instituições sociais no seu âmago.

In doing so, it delves into the paradox of an institution exerting control over youths while at the same time promoting their autonomy and responsibility. The study sheds light on the specific logics of power, control, and inequality produced by such institutional settings. The book’s analysis is based on an ethnographic study of ‘Assisted Freedom’ (Liberdade Assistida) – a form of probation – in the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. This particular context – which is characterized by endemic violent crime, on the one hand, and a highly protective juvenile justice system, on the other – sheds productive light on the contradictions of juvenile justice systems and other public policies based on the values of citizenship, autonomy, and responsibilization.
