Si hay “clásicos” de la ciencia del siglo XIX, ciertamente Bernard es uno de ellos. Y si de él se puede decir esto, que es un “clásico”, con más motivo hay que decir lo mismo de uno de sus grandes libros, el más conocido, que ve ahora la luz en la presente colección de la mano de Pedro García Barreno, Introducción al estudio de la medicina experimental (1865), texto al que Louis Pasteur calificó de “monumento en honor del método que ha constituido las ciencias físicas desde Galileo y Newton, y que Claude Bernard se esfuerza por introducir en la fisiología y en la patología. No se ha escrito nada más luminoso, más completo, más profundo sobre los verdaderos principios del difícil arte de la experimentación”. Bernard, más modesto, seguramente habría dicho que nunca pretendió que la Introducción fuese un código de reglas; en todo caso, unas elaboradas confesiones sobre sus experimentos. Confesiones, eso sí, que se convirtieron en el primer tratado metodológico moderno de las ciencias de la vida.

Spanish and Portuguese conquerors and colonists introduced European scientific practices to the continent, where they hybridized with local traditions to form the beginnings of a truly Latin American science. As countries achieved their independence in the nineteenth century, they turned to science as a vehicle for modernizing education and forwarding "progress." In the twentieth century, science and technology became as omnipresent in Latin America as in the United States and Europe. Yet despite a history that stretches across five centuries, science in Latin America has traditionally been viewed as derivative of and peripheral to Euro-American science. To correct that mistaken view, this book provides the first comprehensive overview of the history of science in Latin America from the sixteenth century to the present. Eleven leading Latin American historians assess the part that science played in Latin American society during the colonial, independence, national, and modern eras, investigating science's role in such areas as natural history, medicine and public health, the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, politics and nation-building, educational reform, and contemporary academic research. The comparative approach of the essays creates a continent-spanning picture of Latin American science that clearly establishes its autonomous history and its right to be studied within a Latin American context.

Book excerpt: Taking the Vesalian anatomical revolution as its point of departure, this volume charts the apparent rise and fall of anatomy studies within universities in sixteenth-century Spain, focussing particularly on primary sources from 1550 to 1600. In doing so, it both clarifies the Spanish contribution to the field of anatomy and disentangles the distorted political and historiographical viewpoints emerging from previous research. Studies of early modern Iberian science have only been carried out coherently and collaboratively in the last few decades, even though fierce debates on the subject have dominated Spanish historiography for more than two centuries. In the field of anatomy studies, many uninformed and biased readings of archival sources have resulted in a very confused picture of the practice of dissection and the teaching of anatomy in the Iberian Peninsula, in which the highly complex conditions of anatomical research within Spain’s national context are often oversimplified. The new empirical evidence that this book brings to light suggests a far more multifaceted narrative of Iberian Renaissance anatomy than has been presented to date.
