Book excerpt: "Big Trees, Not Big Stumps by co-founder of WCWC Paul George chronicles the 25 year history of the Wilderness Committee's campaigns between 1980 and 2005. Included are adventures and success stories, heart-wrenching tales of our losses and candid information about behind-the-scenes activities that few people, until now, have known about. If this book motivates even one person who has never experienced the mystic nature of the wild places like Gwaii Haanas, the Stein Valley or Clayoquot Sound to begin trekking through some wilderness, it will be a success."--Rainforest Store desc.
Download or read book Talk and Log written by Jeremy Wilson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than three decades, the fate of British Columbia’s old-growth forests has been a major source of political strife. While more than 5 million hectares of wood were being clearcut, the BC wilderness movement and forest industry supporters clashed, as they continue to do, both pressing their arguments in a variety of forums, ranging from television studios and logging road blockades to royal commission hearings and cabinet ministers’ offices. The resulting record of conflict confirms American historian Paul Hirt’s characterization of forest policy as "party an ideological issue, partly biological, partly economic, partly technical, and wholly political." Talk and Log is a comprehensive account of the rise and impact of the BC wilderness movement between 1965 and 1996. Jeremy Wilson examines the evolution of the movement’s approaches, evaluates the forest industry’s counterstrategies, and analyzes the patterns and trends underlying shifts in provincial government forest, environment, and parks policies. He describes the "war in the woods" triggered by environmentalists’ efforts to preserve areas such as South Moresby and the Carmanah Valley, and considers the complex forces that pushed the government to expand the protected areas system. Wilson’s perceptive analysis of Social Credit’s failed policies of the 1980s is followed by an assessment of the Harcourt NDP government’s reform iniatives, including the Commission on Resources and Environment (CORE) and the Forest Practices Code. Talk and Log is based on a variety of sources, including government documents, environmental group briefs, and interviews with several dozen politicians, government officials, environmentalists, and forest industry leaders. This book deftly illuminates the forces behind controversies that have divided British Columbians and drawn the attention of people around the world. It is also a thought-provoking examination of issues likely to dominate political debates in BC for decades to come.

Book Synopsis Estimating Historical Variability of Natural Disturbances in British Columbia by : Carmen Wong
Download or read book Estimating Historical Variability of Natural Disturbances in British Columbia written by Carmen Wong and published by University of British Columbia Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural disturbances (mainly fire, but also such phenomena as landslides, catastrophic wind events, floods, and pest infestations) are an integral part of the processes shaping & maintaining forested landscapes in British Columbia. Part 1 of this report presents a concise review of natural disturbance dynamics for each of the 14 biogeoclimatic zones of the province, based on published & unpublished research specific to British Columbia and to similar ecosystems elsewhere. Gaps in research are identified. Part 2 describes 11 methods from the literature for determining intervals for stand-replacing & stand-maintaining disturbances. Information provided for each method includes the principle on which it is based, its strengths & weaknesses, and the type of data & assumptions required. A step-by-step guideline identifies one or more appropriate methods to select, prepare, use, & analyze available data with a focus on data available to timber supply reviews in British Columbia. Part 3 demonstrates an application of the process in part 2 for selecting & using one of the methods for determining disturbance intervals in the Arrow Forest District. The final part makes recommendations, based on the results of the first three parts, on addressing the gaps in research & on quantitative methods for determining disturbance intervals in British Columbia.
