Book excerpt: Unlike museum exhibitions, being organised and structured, archaeological sites enable visitors to associate more freely with the physical environment, often of outstanding natural beauty. Presently, mobile and augmented-reality based applications for archaeological guided tours give priority to visual information, limiting the possible references to the ways the site is associated to its natural surroundings. This book presents InterArch, a design research project based on digital representation, supporting Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR, AR) technology. This pilot digital application, developed for the archaeological site of Ancient Messene in Greece to be implemented for visitors on site, is suitable even for other archaeological sites and cultural environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaches to urban waterfront conservation have been much debated in recent decades. Early schemes focused on leisure and commercial exploitation, more recently greater attention has been paid to environmental and ecological conditions, historic preservation and human well-being. But how do we balance these competing interests and yet ensure sustainable change, preserve identity and yet allow for new development? And how do we involve local people? This book aims to provide some answers to these important questions. The book is divided into three parts: Part One is an overview for regeneration and awareness of historic waterfronts. Part Two argues for the sustainable reuse of important sites to preserve their special identity. Part Three shows the importance of introducing young researchers to the complexities of designing waterfronts for sustainable lifestyles.

Can we reduce health and well-being inequalities through sensible design? The volume focuses on specific studies in urban design, environmental psychology and public health combining ‘green’ spaces with ‘green-blue’ infrastructures, active mobility and facilities, showing a series of criteria necessary to ensure that ‘green-blue’ space can work optimally. The book is divided in two parts: Part one goes on to demonstrate how design along waterfronts can contribute to support the well-being of people and encourage urban quality. Part two identifies design concepts for health and well-being in urban spaces.

These small towns are a great resource of the Mediterranean Cultural Heritage, tangible and intangible, that must be safeguarded and re-evaluated. This volume collects the essays of the members of the Mediterranean CIVVIH Sub-committee presented within the 2021 Webinar, as a comparison between different minor contexts throughout the EU countries around the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Basin. Promoting participation in new urban models seems to be a good opportunity for the revival of the abandoned villages.

Book excerpt: This book broadly covers the given spectrum of disciplines in Computational Life Sciences, transforming it into a strong helping hand for teachers, students, practitioners and researchers. In Life Sciences, problem-solving and data analysis often depend on biological expertise combined with technical skills in order to generate, manage and efficiently analyse big data. These technical skills can easily be enhanced by good theoretical foundations, developed from well-chosen practical examples and inspiring new strategies. This is the innovative approach of Computational Life Sciences-Data Engineering and Data Mining for Life Sciences: We present basic concepts, advanced topics and emerging technologies, introduce algorithm design and programming principles, address data mining and knowledge discovery as well as applications arising from real projects. Chapters are largely independent and often flanked by illustrative examples and practical advise.

Book excerpt: How the groundbreaking science of circadian rhythms can help you sleep better, feel happier, and improve your overall health Your body contains a symphony of tiny timepieces, synchronized to the sun and subtle signals in your environment and behavior. But modern insults like artificial light, contrived time zones, and late-night meals can wreak havoc on your internal clocks. Armed with advances in biology and technology, a circadian renaissance is reclaiming those lost rhythms. The Inner Clock explores the emerging science and its transformative applications: How could taking a walk in the morning and going to bed at the same time each night keep your body in sync? Why are some doctors prescribing treatments at specific times of day? And how might a better understanding of our circadian rhythms improve educational outcomes, optimize sports performance, and support the longevity of our planet? Science journalist Lynne Peeples seeks out the scientists, astronauts, athletes, and patients at the forefront of a growing movement. Along the way, she sleeps in a Cold War-era bunker, chases the midnight sun, spits into test tubes, and wears high-tech light sensors to decipher what makes our internal clocks tick and how we can reset them for the better.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although our urbanized civilization requires freight transport in order to sustain it, urban freight transport is especially recognized for its unsustainable impacts. To reduce the unsustainable impacts of urban freight transport, many local governments develop policies that focus sometimes more on banning or restricting urban transport than on making it more sustainable. In the first part of this thesis we develop a framework to structure the urban freight transport field and to review urban fraight transport sustainability initiatives. The number of initiatives that is succesfully implemented in practice turns out to be quite low. In the review and the following analysis, we try to find the barriers for succesful implementation of the initiatives in practice. In the seond part we examine the impacts of the most commonly used local sustainability policies. Six time-window scenarios and their impacts on the economical, environmental and social sustainability are examined based on a multiple case study. Time-window regulations increase both the environmental and distribution costs. Retail chains are affected differently by time-window pressure and vehicle restrictions due to differences in their logical concept. based on an experiment we examine the effects of retailers' logical decisions in combination with local sustainability policies. Next, we examine the degree to which retailers are able te deal with problems caused by time-windows. Combining the primary and secondary distribution, i.e. factory gate pricing, results in more sustainable distribution operations for the retailer and in less sensivity towards time-window regulations.
