Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the struggle for political freedom in South Africa over the years as having disintegrated into a struggle against corruption. Solomon Mahlangu, Chris Hani and many others gave their lives only to water the tree of corruption that has destroyed the core South African economy and has set in a new struggle for economic freedom. It chronicles the history of a nation torn asunder by a political theory (apartheid) that diversified an otherwise unitary state. Unlike other Southern African countries namely Lesotho, Swaziland and Botswana, South Africa is a multi-racial-cultural state that needs an honest and truthful forgiveness and reconciliation to take its people forward into an economic freedom enjoyed by all and sundry. The book’s focus is a vision aimed at seeing corruption, which agreeably steals from the poor, disintegrating; and a journey beginning to unite the people of South Africa to together build a corruption free society and an economy addressing fundamentals. Papering over the cracks will not help nip our many challenges in the bud. The nature of the problem necessitates a hard hitting nail biting analysis of the truth. Interrogate your thoughts - together let’s build a new South African rainbow nation...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten major ethnic groups are featured - including the San, Zulu, Ndebele, Basotho, and Venda - as well as several smaller sub-groups. This book describes the individual personality and history of each, their education, laws, languages, medicine and magic, and their religion. Over 200 photographs capture the vibrant color of ceremonial and everyday dress and ornamentation, musical instruments, dances and rites of passage, art, homes, and work. The remarkable metal neck rings and the geometrically beaded wire hoops worn by Ndebele and Ntwana women, the sacrificial ceremonies of the Zulu, the long pipes smoked by the Xhosa, and the traditional hunter-gatherer weapons of the San, deep in the Kalahari Desert - the details of today's way of life are recorded here in evocative pictures, while former traditions, now lost, fill the text with the intriguing, vital history of each group.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storm over South Africa follows the lives and tribulations of a diverse group of characters through the Second Anglo-Boer War from 1899 to 1902 in South Africa. They belonged to different levels of the opposing societies, and the story follows their actual life-and-death experiences in this conflict. The characters include the seventeen-year-old son of a Boer president, a young shipbuilding dock worker and his military nurse girlfriend from the industrial northeast of England, and a young Canadian soldier who volunteered for Canadas first campaign outside its borders. Involved too are such illustrious British participants as Winston Churchill, Field Marshal Frederick Roberts, and the generals Kitchener, Ian Hamilton, and Robert Baden-Powell, among others. Boer leaders involved include the generals Christiaan de Wet, Louis Botha, Koos de la Rey, and Jan Smuts. The reader is guided through the various twists and turns of the first major British conflict of the twentieth century from its beginning through to its end. The naivety and excitement of combatants in the lead-up to and beginning of the Second Anglo-Boer War was contagious. It pulled many naive young men into the maelstrom of combat. The failures, frustrations, disappointments, disillusionments, and suffering soon emerged. It is a tale of imperial arrogance, determination, stubbornness, innocence, love, and loss experienced in a rugged and alluring land far from the heart of the British Empire.

The message of this book applies just as easily to the United States, where the fault lines run very deep, too. And the U.S. has been trying to solve these problems a great deal longer than the new South Africa."—Archbishop Desmond Tutu "David Goodman's vivid, intensely personal, and unobtrusively erudite book is irresistible reading for anyone who cares about South Africa."—Adam Hochshild, author of King Leopold's Ghost "A gem of a book. An excellent introduction to the intricacies of South African politics and society."—Gail M. Gerhart, Foreign Affairs "A sequence of truths shown through the lives of eight contrasted citizens, this book reveals our new South Africa with the startling accuracy of flashes of lightning on a stormy night—and with the apartheid storm over, a remarkable rainbow of hope can be seen."—Donald Woods, author of Biko

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The heavy smell of blood filled the air, and every moment you had this intense fear that the next bullet was meant for you. So remembered William Thorne, a South African volunteer soldier who fought in the muddy trenches along the River Somme in France on Europe’s Western Front. A boy of nineteen at the time, he was one of thousands of South Africans who took part in the 1916 Somme Offensive between the Allied forces and the Germans. It was one of the bloodiest and costliest conflicts of the First World War, resulting in over a million deaths. The men of the 1st South African Infantry Brigade were involved on a large scale and distinguished themselves in all major engagements during the campaign. But their bravery came at a price. In the first month alone, after six days of fighting to recapture the village of Longueval and clear Delville Wood of enemy soldiers, of the brigade’s 3 433 soldiers, only 750 were left standing. The rest were dead or wounded. By the armistice, the South Africans had suffered some 15 000 casualties in France, of which one third had died.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) hearings can be considered one of the most significant rhetorical events of the late twentieth century. The TRC called language into action, tasking it with promoting understanding among a divided people and facilitating the construction of South Africa’s new democracy. Other books on the TRC and deliberative rhetoric in contemporary South Africa emphasize the achievement of reconciliation during and in the immediate aftermath of the transition from apartheid. From Apartheid to Democracy, in contrast, considers the varied, complex, and enduring effects of the Commission’s rhetorical wager. It is the first book-length study to analyze the TRC through such a lens. Katherine Elizabeth Mack focuses on the dissension and negotiations over difference provoked by the Commission’s process, especially its public airing of victims’ and perpetrators’ truths. She tracks agonistic deliberation (evidenced in the TRC’s public hearings) into works of fiction and photography that extend and challenge the Commission’s assumptions about truth, healing, and reconciliation. Ultimately, Mack demonstrates that while the TRC may not have achieved all of its political goals, its very existence generated valuable deliberation within and beyond its official process.

Book excerpt: '... let them be well used, for they are the abstract and brief chronicles of the time'. (William Shakespeare, Hamlet,I.ii) This is a finely-woven set of essays on South African literatures addressing a kaleidoscopic range of disciples spanning literature, history, cultural criticism and journalism. '...some of the most relevant and re-visionary literary criticism of South African writing I have encountered...The author's intimate knowledge of the socio-historical and political contexts in which the texts under review came into being transcends that of documented history. His personal involvement in precisely that socio-historical moment as a so-called black South African and de facto thus a member of the 'disadvantaged' community, which so many of the authors (whether black or white) under review were at pains to represent, and later as an intellectual in exile, makes him singular well positioned to interrogate and to reinterpret earlier criticism of several texts. His project is to explore the critical ideological assumptions embedded not only in a large number of South African novels but also in the criticism thereof.' - Prof Rosemary Gray 'Writing about the country of my birth not only from places far distant from places for distant from it and to which at those times I was convinced I was would never be allowed to return, perhaps affected the matter as profoundly as did the new ways of seeing critical and cultural theories,' says the author. The collection covers five key themes, each of which engages with the theme of global interest in and eradication of not only the political but also the cultural distortions of the apartheid regime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “vividly compelling” New York Times Notable Book, a surgeon recounts his experiences in war zones (The Washington Post). From treating the casualties of apartheid in Cape Town to operating on Kurdish guerrillas in Northern Iraq at the end of the Gulf War, Jonathan Kaplan has saved (and lost) lives in the remotest corners of the world in the most extreme conditions. He has been a hospital surgeon, a ship’s physician, an air-ambulance doctor, and a trauma surgeon. He has worked in locations as diverse as England, Burma, Eritrea, the Amazon, Mozambique, and the United States. In his “eloquent . . . beautifully written” memoir of unforgettable adventure and tragedy, Dr. Kaplan explores the great challenge of his career—to maintain his humanity in the face of incredible pain and suffering (The New York Times Book Review). “Packed with moments of searing intensity,” The Dressing Station is an “extraordinary” look into the nature of human violence, the shattering contradictions of war, and the complicated role of medicine in the modern world (The Washington Post). “In this refreshingly unsentimental memoir, [Kaplan] offers a vivid look at what it’s like to practice medicine in places where there are always too many casualties and not enough resources. His descriptions of surgery are unflinching . . . Kaplan gives us a remarkable self-portrait of the war junkie.” —The New Yorker
